PERSONS WANTED

Auckland. — William Mclntosh Ogilvie, failing to maintain (see Police Gazette, 1937, page 596). When arrested he is to be interviewed regarding a false statement he made to the Helensville police on the 27th July last that the Waimauku School, of which he was headmaster, had been broken into and £1 stolen, together with an office drawer and school records. It is now considered that he burnt the drawer and records. tife/ZX

Auckland. —15th June last, for false pretences(l) Henry John Carter, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 679, and (2) Man, whose name is thought to be J. McQuilien, age about twenty-one, height about 5 ft. 7 in., salesman, medium build, red hair. They called on John Angus Sidwell, farmer, Warkwork, and demonstrated what they represented to be preservative paint. Being satisfied with the demonstration complainant ordered fifteen gallons, which was delivered on the 15th and 16th June by McQuillen, who received £4 14s. for it, and gave a receipt. The mixture was subsequently found to be used engine oil containing a small amount of pigment, and of no value as paint. There are similar charges pending. When located they are to be interviewed. September last, for theft of three tennis racquets (recovered), and a brown leather kitbag with “ R.F.8.” on side, containing a grey striped Summit shirt, size 4; a navy-blue tie; and a pair of navy-blue socks : total value, £7 55., the property of Frederick Raymond Bennett, 29 Huia Road, Otahuhu, James Masters, age about twenty-three, height about 5 ft. 8 in., medium build, fresh complexion, wavy dark hair; wearing grey overcoat (no hat). The property was stolen from a motor-car in Liverpool Street, and the tennis racquets were sold by a man of the above description to second-hand dealers. No warrant.

Auckland.— ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for four days in default of paying £2 ss. fine and costs for being found in a common gaming-house, Sydney Priestly, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 773.

Rotorua. lßth instant, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his child, Henry James Donald Moran, age forty-one, height 5 ft. 7 in., blacksmith, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, wavy dark hair going bald, some front teeth missing, thin face; a heavy pipe smoker, and a heavy drinker; usually dressed in a dark suit. Wanganui.— Edna Jessie Helen Howell’s purse and money stolen (see Police Gazette, 1937, pages 692 and 704) : At an identification parade complainant was unable to identify Patrick Brennan, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 779, as one of the men who stole her property.

Wanganui. — l3th instant, that he may be located and interviewed regarding a stolen bicycle which he left, between the 16th and 19th January last, with Raymond Henry Parkinson, 53 Dublin Street, as security for a loan of £3, Jim Conway, age about thirty-four, height about 5 ft. 8 in., butcher, medium build, wavy ginger hair, fair complexion; usually dressed in a blue suit with white stripes, grey telt hat, and black shoes. He informed Parkinson that he required the money to get to Wellington to take up a position with a firm of butchers. The bicycle is the property of Allan Alexander Croft, and is described in Police Gazette, 1937, page 169.

Palmerston .North. —30th September last, for attempted false pretences, H. Barnes (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-eight, height about 5 ft. 9 in., good build, fresh complexion; dressed in grey trousers and grey sports coat, or a navy-blue suit; American accent. On the 30th September last a Man (name unknown), attempted to obtain a motor-tyre tube, value 155., from Porter Motors, 32 Colombo Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £lO, No. M. 74826, drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Auckland (altered from Palmerston North), by H. Barnes in favour of H. Grey. The cheque-form was obtained from the licensee, Royal Hotel, by the man described above, who stayed at the hotel from the 28th to 30th September, under the name Barnes, and a man known by that name had previously attempted to have the cheque cashed by William Skinner, men’s outfitter. The man who attempted to obtain the motor-tyre tube referred to is described below, and Barnes may have procured him to commit the offence : Age about thirty-two, height about 5 ft., medium build, dark complexion, black hair, slight moustache, thin face; dressed in a navy-blue suit and dark-grey felt hat; good appearance. Wellington. 3rd instant, on warrant for theft of two blankets (recovered), value 155., the property of May Emma Barber, boardinghouse-keeper, 198 Vivian Street, J. Graham, age about thirty-four, height about 5 ft. 7 in., seaman, medium build, dark complexion, black hair, blue eyes, two moles on right cheek, scar on left side of head, right arm appears to be paralysed ; dressed in a navy-blue suit or grey trousers, dark tweed overcoat, and felt hat. Accused who was known as Frank Caldicott, boarded with complainant, and stole the blankets which he pledged in a pawnshop on the 3rd instant, giving the name J. Graham. The photograph of Patrick Michael O’Sullivan, alias Lance Carswell Carroll, referred to in Police Gazette, 1934, page 42, and Photographs, page 24, has been identified as that of accused. He represents himself to be a sea captain, may assume the names Whitelaw, Eccles, Graham, and Edwards, and may seek medical treatment for an injury to his head. He is subject to fainting fits. Christchurch. 2lst June last, on warrant for unlawfully converting to his own use a motor-car (recovered), value, £B, the property of Abraham Mark Hollander, 68 Heaton Street, Papanui, Bernard Way, age nineteen (looks twenty-two), height 5 ft. 11 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, good build, fresh complexion, brown hair ; dressed in a grey worsted suit with stripes; good appearance. Two other young men who were seen to get out of the car with accused have been dealt with by the Court. They have made statements implicating Way.

Ashburton. —l4th instant, on warrant for false pretences* John McCullough Forsyth, alias John Page, referred to in Police Gazette, 1936, page 594. He was wearing a grey cloth overcoat (no hat). He obtained £7 9s. in money from Charles James Bax, motor-mechanic, 181 Cox Street, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, No. 422248, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Ashburton, in favour of J. Small or “ Bearer,” and signed “J. Harris.” The cheque is one of two he obtained from Arthur Read, Eiffleton on the 16th instant. He is in possession of a small light brownish-coloured Austin sedan motor-car, and he may be accompanied by a woman, age about twenty, with frizzy hair, and wearing a white frock.

Dunedin. —7th July last, that he may be located and interviewed regarding £25 which was given to him by Richard Knight, 642 Cumberland Street, to deposit in a safe, York Drummond, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 10 in., fibrous plasterer, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, small broken nose, one upper front tooth broken, pigeon-toed; stutters; usually dressed in light-grey sports trousers, grey striped coat, grey sleeveless pullover, blue spotted scarf, and black shoes (no hat). Drummond, who boarded at the same address as Richard Knight, falsely represented to the latter that he was employed by Salmond and Salmond, architects, Princes Street, and induced Knight to give him the money to deposit in the safe at his employers’ office. He is not known to the firm mentioned, and no money was deposited.
