Rotorua. ultimo, on warrant for unlawfully converting to his own use a Morris motor-car (recovered), value, £226, the property of Allan William Jones, Tutanekai Street, James Bentley, age about thirty-eight, height 6 ft. 9 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, copper complexion, black hair, brown eyes; a half-caste Maori. On the 20th ultimo accused hired a rental car from complainant which he was to return two days later. On the 28th ultimo the car was found by the Otorohanga police, having' been abandoned at Hangatiki. Hastings. —22nd ultimo, on warrant for forgery, Charles Frederick Murphy, alias Lewis, alias James Bentley, age forty-one, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer and hairdresser, Maori, medium build, copper complexion, black hair, brown eyes, left leg shorter than right, walks lame, left ring finger-nail deformed ; dressed in a brown suit, brown hat, and bright silk scarf. On the 22nd ultimo accused obtained £1 in cash from John Winlove and Sons, merchants, Waipukurau, by means of a cheque for £2l 9s. drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Symonds Street, Auckland, No. L. 88138, to which the signature “J. R. Reid ” had been forged. He altered payment of the cheque from Auckland to Hastings. The cheque is from the cheque-book of Frederick Augustine Bolton, referred to in the notice relating to J. R. Martini in Police Gazette, 1937, page 346. Tho forged cheque referred to above was tendered in payment of goods, value £2O 95., which he said he would call for later, but did not do so. Wanganui. —2sth March last, for theft of a girl’s dress and four pairs of bloomers, &c. (recovered), value, £3 18s. 4d., the property of James Alexander Aitken, Moumahaka, Leonard Charles King, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 144. The property was stolen from a motor-car and sold the same day to a second-hand dealer for 10s. by a man of Aitken’s description, who gave the name J. Smith. He visited the dealer again next day and attempted to sell an overcoat and three grey blankets, but he became suspicious and disappeared before the arrival of the police. No warrant. J^ERVIEWED.

Palmerston North. —3oth ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Emily Kaye Ash, and two children, 216 Albert Street, Norman John Ash, age thirty-two, height 5 ft. 10 in., motor salesman and motor-driver, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, black hair, blue eyes, small scar under chin, long features; usually dressed in a grey suit and black shoes (no hat). His photograph is filed. Arrears to Ist March last, £9. He is alleged to have left from Wellington by the s.s. “ Awatea ” for Sydney (Australia) on the 9th March last, travelling tourist class, under the name John Hannah.
