Dargaville. During the night of 21st ultimo, from an alleyway off Victoria Street, the property of CHARLES PARKER, Victoria Street, a Coventry Eagle motor-cycle, red tank, black mudguards, engine No. G.P.R.O.G.E. 179, chassis No. 50328, registration No. 11 v 747, fitted with electric light and horn ; value, £25. Surfdale. On the 2nd or 3rd January last, from Matiatia Bay, the property of VERE GEORGE ROLFE, Oneroa, Waiheke Island, a dinghy, painted white, 8 ft. 6 in. long, caval build, double skin; value, £B. -Identifiable.

Auckland. —On the 23rd January last, a letter-box at the corner of Campbell and Rawhiti Roads, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Post and Telegraph Department) was broken open and the following stolen: About thirty letters, four of which contain the following described cheques : A cheque, No. Y. 31815, for £62 2s. 4d., in favour of Gollin and Co. Prop., Ltd., Wellington ; a cheque, No. Y. 31814, for £54 9s. lid. in favour of Maclcy, Logan, and Caldwell, Auckland; a cheque, No. Y. 31816, for £9 19s. 6d., in favour of Manawatu Knitting Mills, Palmerston North ; and a cheque, No. Y. 31817, for £3O 6s. 2d., in favour of Brooklands Ltd., Auckland. Payment has been stopped on the cheques, which are all drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Onehunga, signed “ J. Pilkington,” and dated 23rd January, 1937.

Auckland. —30th January last, from a motor-car outside the Ellerslie Racecourse, the property of RICHARD JOSEPH SEXTON, Kaipake, Hamilton, a brown leather heavy exercise saddle, white padding, webb expanding girth and surcingle, new leathers and stirrup-irons, new piece of leather sewn around back of seat; a heavy grey travelling rug, fringe at each end and a ladies’ grey tweed overcoat with grey silk lining, cape attached, Roslyn make, brown fur collar : total value, about £l6 15s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —27th February last, from a room in the Hotel Auckland, Queen Street, the property of ALEXANDER TAIT and another, Devonport Road, Tauranga, a pair of tortoise-shell reading spectacles with full-length rolled-gold wings, left wing slightly thinner than right wing, nose-piece has been repaired with brass ; a pair of green sun spectacles, long spring on top ; and a gentlemen’s single-breasted brown herringbone tweed overcoat, size 5 or 6, made by A. Devcich, Victoria Street, Auckland : total value, £6 16s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Man (name unknown), age about twenty-two, height about 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, very fair hair, freckles on forehead; dressed in a light grey coat, and may be wearing trousers of same material as coat; smart appearance. He was seen in the room by complainant.

Auckland.— l2th ultimo, from the Wellington-Auckland limited express, the property of MARGARET POWELL, 17 Adams Street, Green Lane, a brown leather handbag, 9 in. by 5 in., with brown silk lining, spring fastener, containing about £1 in money ; a New Zealand Government Stock dividend warrant, No. 46-5639, for £6, issued at Wellington in favour of complainant, marked “ Not Negotiable ” ; a diamond cluster ring, narrow band, large stone in centre surrounded by seven or eight smaller stones in claw setting, unusual filigree work on each side of cluster; and a black Onoto fountain-pen: total value, £23 17s. 6d. Identifiable except money.

Auckland. —10th ultimo, from a room in the Waverley Hotel, the property of LORNA BYRNE, 7 Ann Street, Sydney (Australia), a dark-grey full-length musquash fur coat with dark crepe-de-Chine lining, inside pocket on right side, may have “Stagg and Russell ” and “ Made in England ” on tag at neck, fur button on collar and on waist, plain cuffs, skins at back point downwards and to centre of coat; value, £35. Identifiable.

Gisborne. Between the 23rd December last and 17th January, from Mr. Grey’s wool-shed, Waiohika, the property of ROBERT CHAPMAN ARTHUR TOMBLESON, Waimata, a bale (42 in. wool-pack) containing about 300 lb. of bellies, pieces, and lambs wool, “ R.T.4” on pack, description of contents marked on outside of bale in stencilled double circle : total value, £ls. Pack only identifiable.

New Plymouth. — the 30th ultimo, the TARANAKI CLUB, St. Aubyn Street, was broken into and the following stolen: A dark-green safe, 24 in. by 16 in. by 16 in., brass handle, brass keyhole, containing a gentlemen’s silver hunting English lever watch, key wind, “ G. Jago ” inside back case ; a black metal cash-box, about 9 in. by 6 in.; two cash boxes, about 6 in. by 4 in.; a cash-box, about 4 in. by 2 in.; two petty-cash books; an Ariel duplicate cash-book; a key, padlock type, about 4 in. long ; about £SO in money ; an open cheque, No. C. 37173, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, New Plymouth, by Gordon Fraser, in favour of “ Self,” dated 29/3/37 ; a cheque for £4 155., drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, New Plymouth, by Ernie Davies, dated 29/3/37 ; a cheque, No. C. 96450, for £3, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, New Plymouth, by D. Identifiable.

Wellington. 9th December last, from a dressing-room in the Hotel St. George, the property of FRANCES HAYMcKENZIE, 15 Putnam Street, Northland, a ladies’ black electric seal full-length fur coat with reddish-blue silk lining, long brownish-black skunk collar, break in one skin on left side of collar, “ Tossman ” at back of neck, pocket on inside ; value, £SO. Identifiable. A coat of the following description was left in place of the one stolen : A black French Chenile fur coat with brown skunk collar, 40 in. long, 60 in. around bottom, brick-red floral brocade lining, two blue buttons on front, coat has been repaired several times. A ladies’ linen handkerchief with “ E. North ” in indelible pencil on it was found in a pocket of the coat.

Wellington. the Ist instant, the dwelling of Percy James Martin, No. 3 Carlton Flats, 241 The Terrace, was broken into and the following, the property of ISABELLA EDITH RADFORD, 147 Dixon Street, stolen: A navyblue imitation crocodile leather handbag, 6 in. by 9 in., envelope shape, zip fastener on compartment inside, strap handle on back; a small navy-blue purse with white lining, nickel clip ; about £2 15s. in money ; a money-order telegram from Patca for £25, addressed to complainant; a blue enamel arid nickel oblong compact; a powder-puff and white handkerchief ; and four suit-case keys and a Yale key contained in a navy-blue leather key-holder: total value, about £2B 6s. Identifiable except money. Payment on the money-order telegram has been stopped. Suspicion is attached to Man (name unknown) age about twenty-seven, height about 5 ft. 8 in., strong build, believed to have curly black hair; dressed in dark grey trousers, light-grey tight-fitting sports coat, and grey felt hat. /*7 f /* J f * —During the might of 20th ultimo, the Turf Hotel, Stoke, was broken into and the following, the property of ANNIE ELIZABETH O’CONNOR, licensee, was stolen : £6O in cheques (recovered); ten £5 notes; £l3O in £1 and 10s. notes; and £2O in small silver. Suspicion is attached to(l) John Alexander Thompson, age about thirty-eight, height about 5 ft. 8J in., salesman, medium build, fair complexion, ginger hair going bald, blue eyes; well dressed. The photograph of Ivan Alexander Edwards, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 264, and Photographs, 1930, page 71, has been identified as that of Thompson. (2) Sidney George Smith, referred to in Police Gazette, 1934, page 183, and Photographs, page 21. Both suspects arrived in Nelson on 16th ultimo, and left on the 25th ultimo, and during that time they frequently visited the hotel, and complainant believes they knew where the money was kept in the cupboard. The cheques were recovered in an attache-case about one mile and a half from the hotel on the morning of the 21st ultimo. They are believed to be selling a solder preparation. Thompson is in possession of an Essex motorcar, registration No. 46 v 019. They have been interviewed, but no evidence resulted.

Invercargill. — the 10th January last and 13th ultimo, from a hut at New River, the property of CLAUDE HOWARD BELSHAM, 123 Ritchie Street, a -22 calibre Stevens Favourite rifle, No. 996 ; value, £1 10s. Identifiable.
