He called at complainant’s garage and asked to be allowed a trial run with a used Chrysler car. He was permitted to take the car on condition that it be returned in one hour. He did not. return the car, which was recovered at Kaukapakapa next day. Accused obtained £5 from Rowena Bethwaite, clerk, Hotel St. George, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount on the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, dated 3rd March, 1937. Morgan had an account at the bank mentioned, but at the lime he issued the cheque he knew that there were not sufficient funds to meet it.

Dunedin. —l2th November last, on warrant for false pretences, Arthur Bertram Taylor, age forty-four, height 5 ft. 9 in., manufacturer and salesman, native of New Zealand, slight build, sallow complexion, brown hair turning grey, blue eyes, noticeable line on each side of mouth, prominent chin ; dressed in light-coloured trousers, grey sports coat, and felt hat. Accused obtained £3 10s. from Paterson and Barr, Ltd., hardware merchants, by means of a valueless cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, Sydenham, dated 12/11 /36, and signed “ Christchurch Lacquer Company, per A. Taylor, proprietor.” There are other similar charges pending. During the past year in various towns in the South Island he has obtained several hundred pounds from young men by inducing them to enter into agreements to learn and conduct the business of lacquer spraying.
