Gisborne. —26th ultimo, on warrant for failing to maintain his illegitimate child, of whom Ivy Merle Pitcher is the mother, James Thompson, age twenty-nine, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, good build, dark complexion, brown hair, brown eyes, full face, no teeth.

Napier. —l6th December last, on warrant for false pretences, S. R. Watts (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-three, height 5 ft. 9 in., thin build, fair complexion, sandy hair, thin nose, small weak face, small moustache; dressed in grey sports trousers, dark sports coat, and fawn felt hat. Accused obtained £lO from Henry Williams and Sons, ironmongers, Hastings Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £l7 18s. on the National Bank of New Zealand in favour of H. G. Browne, and signed S. R. Watts. He was given an 1.0. U. for the balance of the money, but he failed to return on the 22nd December as arranged. The cheque-form, together with other property described below, had been stolen from a bedroom in the Masonic Hotel, the property of Harry Esmond Greig, Tirohanga Road, Lower Hutt, and another : A green leather pocket wallet of Russian leather, containing a second-class tourist ticket available for North Island railway lines between the 15th December, 1936, and the 11th January, 1937 ; a second-class return railway-ticket, Wellington-Auekland, available from 22nd December, 1936 ; a child’s second-class return railway ticket,

Wellington-Auekland (all issued by the Government Tourist Bureau at Wellington on the Ist December, 1936); two medals (recovered); and £1 15s. in money: total value, £ls 18s. Bd. This property may have been stolen by a man who gave the name H. M. Sebright (name probably fictitious), and who booked into the hotel on the 16th December last, but disappeared later the same day. The recovered medals which had been stolen from another room in the hotel, were found hidden on top of a wardrobe in the room temporarily occupied by Sebright, who may be identical with S. R. Watts, for whom a warrant has been issued as referred to above. The writing in the hotel register is similar to that on the cheque, and the descriptions of both men are identical.

Palmerston North. 2lst November last, for assaulting Joyce Ruth Bishop, Man (name unknown), age about twenty, height 5 ft. 8 in., medium build; dressed in grey trousers, blue coat, and grey felt hat. While cycling at about 9.30 p.m. the accused, also on a bicycle, rode up behind her and struck her on the back of the neck with what appeared to be a piece of wood about 18 in. long. Palmerston North.— l9th November last, for assaulting Anna Magdaline Pedersen, Man (name unknown), age about twenty, height 5 ft. 8 in., medium build. While complainant was cycling along Foxton Line accused, also on a bicycle, overtook her and struck her on the head presumably with a piece of wood. He was not wearing a hat, and his bicycle is described as being new and probably of racing pattern. He may be identical with Man (name unknown), referred to in preceding paragraph.
