PROPERTY STOLEN.

Auckland. —14th April last, from a motor-car in Princes Street, the property of TREVOR MOSS DAVIS, 7 Princes Court Flats, four silver drinking containers in sizes from 4 oz. to 8 oz., contained in dark-brown leather case, 9 in. by 6 in. by 3 in.; a two-cell nickel-plated electric torch; and a tin of fifty Craven A cigarettes : total value, about £5 10s. Containers and case only identifiable.

Auckland. On the 26th April last, the dwelling of NESTA SHORT, Waipuna Road, Otahuhu, was broken into and the following stolen : Two long strings of ordinary white pearls ; a short string of ordinary white pearls; a ladies’ long old fashioned gold watch-chain with small links ; a small gold chain with gold heart-shaped locket attached; a gold ring, set with a double row of pearls, five on each side; a fancy dress gold ring, set with an oval jade stone; a gentlemen’s gold hunting watch with front of case missing, not in working order, key winder, probably 18 ct. gold; a two-cell electric nickel-plated torch ; a Blackbird fountain-pen ; a sovereign ; a 10s. note; about ss. in coppers in an old linen tobacco bag : total value, £5 12s. Identifiable except money.

Auckland. —On the Ist ultimo, the dwelling of GEORGE FRANCIS SMITH, 163 Campbell Road, was broken into and the following stolen : Three gold brooches, a gold ring, and a pendant (recovered); a ladies’ gold wristlet-watch, No. 115736, made by Stewart Dawson, Arabic numerals, black ribbon band; a ladies’ chased silver open-face keyless wristlet-watch, old fashioned and heavy; and 13s. in threepenny pieces : total value, £l6 3s. Identifiable except money. Suspicion is attached to the man described below, who gave the name William Dexter, when he pawned some of the stolen property: Age about twenty-three, height 5 ft. 7 in., painter, medium build, pale complexion, dark hair; wearing dark clothes.

Auckland. —During the night of 30th April last the shop of LOUISE MAY WILLIAMS, 8 Park Avenue, Grafton, was broken into and the following stolen: A small-fitting green silk frock, about 48 in. long, Paisley front, coatee effect, large j ewelled ornament at neck ; a full-length flame woollen frock, embroidered front with belt and buckle; a brown woollen frock, tucked fawn front with belt; a violet-coloured velvetdown frock, embroidered in violet and mauve, O.S. size, jewelled ornaments on neck and belt, about 52 in. long ; a violet-coloured gown of light shade, lower part of sleeve heavily embroidered with mauve, violets, and silver thread, jewelled ornaments on neck and belt; a small fitting long green satin frock, tunic effect on skirt, square neck with gold ornament on it, loops for belt; about four woollen frocks of assorted sizes in brown, green, and wine colours, relieved with colour touches and embroidery ; a large fitting black velvet bridge coat fully lined with black silk; a large fitting black velvet bridge coat, fully lined with black silk, trimmed with gold lame, cuffs faced with gold, gold flower on collar; a ladies’ navy-blue fur-timmed coat with skunk collar, fully lined, about 48 in. long; a ladies’ brown cloth coat with brown fox collar, fully lined, about 48 in. long; and a grey tweed coat, O.S. size, fully lined with grey silk, sleeves trimmed with loose tucks, about 50 in. long : total value, £3B 10s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —On the 18th April last, the dwelling of ROBERT SURMAN, 494 Mount Eden Road was broken into and the following stolen : A ladies’ gold keyless pocket watch about size of half-crown, leaves and flowers engraved on front and back ; a gentlemen’s silver round keyless Waltham wristlet-watch, Arabic numerals, white enamelled dial; a gold band ring, “ Belle ” or “ Bella ” on outside, “ From A. to M.” on inside; three hand-made doilies about size of dinner plate with fancy edges; and eighteen bottles of home-made champagne : total value, £lO 14s. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Two Men. (names unknown) — (1) Age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 10 in., strong build, fair hair; right hand was covered with blood and may be badly cut; wearing dark coat, white canoe shirt (no hat); and (2) description not available. The suspects were in the house when complainant and his wife returned home, and they escaped through a window.

Auckland. 2oth April last, the property of JAMES MACPHERSON, Runciman, a small brown leather purse containing a sovereign and a half-sovereign; a Government dividend warrant (similar in appearance to a cheque), No. 49/3751, for £5, payable to James Macplierson, Runciman, “N.Z. Government Stock Dividend Warrant” and “Not Negotiable” on it; and a cheque, No. B. 36265, for £35 17s. Id. on the account of the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co., drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand in favour of complainant, and signed W. H. Blakeway and Thos. Tyne, dated 20th April, 1936, marked “ Not Negotiable ” : total value, £42 7s. Id. Cheques only identifiable. Complainant lost his purse containing the cheques, &c.

Auckland. —Ist ultimo, from a cottage adjoining the Grand Hotel, the property of SYDNEY ROBERT HAMMOND, 72 Ponsonby Road, a pair of shoes (recovered); a pair of gentlemen’s patent leather shoes, size 6, imitation toe-caps, aluminium dancing-caps on toes; and a blue suit with fine blue stripes about f in. apart, size 4, small tear in leg of trousers, made by Robinson, tailor, Albert Street, Auckland : total value, £4 10s. Suspicion is attached to White (name probably fictitious), age about twenty-six, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, fair complexion, very fair hair; well spoken; dressed in light-grey suit, dark overcoat (no hat). Auckland. — the night of 2nd ultimo, from a room in Brighton House, 61 Hobson Street, the property of ALBERT SCHIMANSKI, Durham Road, Inglewood, two £5 Reserve Bank of New Zealand notes ; and a New Plymouth post-office savings-bank book, No. 103531. Suspicion is attached to White (name probably fictitious), referred to in preceding paragraph. He shared a room with complainant but left during the night, and on the following morning complainant discovered that the property had been stolen from his coat pocket. The pair of shoes (recovered) mentioned in preceding paragraph were found in this room after the suspect had left.

Tauranga. —-On or about the Ist April last, from the office of SAMUEL SNOWDEN, blacksmith, a gentlemen’s silver hunting keyless Waltham watch, No. 21287181 (similar to illustration No. 2 in Police Gazette, 1911, page 1), cross in circle and “ 1828 ” near hinge of back case; value, £5. Identifiable.

New Plymouth. —On the 28th ultimo, the jeweller’s shop of LAURENCE WALTER EUGENE HEDGES, Devon Street, was broken into and the following stolen : Diamond —Two three-stone, half-hoop, platinum setting, chased platinum shoulders; a single-stone, platinum top, box setting ; a nine-stone square cluster, millegrain platinum setting ; a three-stone, platinum setting, fairly large stones, gold shank ; a cluster coronet, platinum setting, one large diamond in centre of seven others, platinum top, chased sides; five single-stone, box setting, pierced sides, platinum chased shoulders; a three-stone diamond clover-leaf, platinum claw setting ; a three-stone millegrain platinum setting ; a sevenstone cluster, millegrain platinum setting ; a three-stone crossover, gold claw setting; a single-stone coronet, six end stones, platinum setting, centre stone in claw and others millegrained; a cluster, about eight fairly large stones, gold claw setting ; a cluster, diamond-shaped, about ten stones in platinum claw setting; a three-stone crossover, platinum claw setting ; a three-stone crossover, platinum claw setting ; a three-stone half-hoop, millegrain platinum setting, plain shank; two five-stone half-hoop, gold claw setting, fairly heavy shank; a five-stone, three rubies and two diamonds, half-hoop, gold claw setting; a cluster with end stones, millegrain settings, six stones in cluster and two on each shoulder; a three-stone crossover, diamonds in gold setting ; a single-stone in box setting, stepped sides with three stones on each side of centre stone; a platinum coronet cluster, chased platinum sides (all are stamped 18 ct. and some have “ P.L.A.T.” stamped inside). Gentlemen’s Signet Rings — One octagon-shaped top ; one square top, chased round edge ; a heavy shield-shaped, engraved on top; three plain shieldshaped ; two plain oval-shaped; two round plain; a cushion-shaped plain; two plain rectangular; four plain shield-shaped (several of the signet rings have “ J.H.W. 9 ct.” and Birmingham Hall Mark stamped inside). Watches ladies’ 9 ct. gold Swiss wristlet, cream-coloured dial with Arabic numerals, black cathedral hands, fancy case, design of hammer for trade-mark and “9c ” stamped inside case, gold expander attached ; a ladies’ gold wristlet, plain case, leather strap, silver dial, jeweller’s mark “IV 0574 ” and “ 9 ct.” inside ; a ladies’ chromium-plated, bevelled case, silver expander attached, silver dial with gold centre, Arabic numerals, red dots for second marks, “ M.F.H. 18/8/35” engraved on back, broken staff; a gentlemen’s nickel pocket watch, “ Moeris ” lever engraved on movement, screw back and front, knife marks on rim, glass cracked in two places; a ss. piece, dated 1897, has solder marks where pin has been fitted for use as brooch : total value, £333. The following described cap was found on the premises, apparently left by the offender : A dark-brown small check cap, size 6-|, branded “ Real McGregor ” and “ Real Roan,” registered trade-mark 412,292, TRAVERS’S ring stolen (see Police Gazette 1936, page 341): The ring has been recovered from a jeweller at Wanganui'to whom it was sold on the 30th ultimo by a man who gave the name of J. Mahon. He may be identical with Joseph James Mahon, referred to in following paragraph. Patea. —2Bth ultimo, the property of PHYLLIS GERTRUDE TRAVERS, Whenuakura, a gentlemen’s heavy tweed double-breasted overcoat. purplish-brown colour, half lined with brown sateen, belt let in at back/’ two ladies’ handkerchiefs, one has red border and the other grey; and an old fibre suit-case, about 26 in. bv 1 8 in. j —total value. £4 6s. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Joseph James 1 , age twenty-four, height 5 ft. Ilf in., farm labourer, r native of .New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, curly dark-brown hair, grey eyes; dressed in dark-grey working coat, grey flannel trousers, open shirt, black shoes (no hat). He was employed by complainant and her husband, and during their absence he stole the above-mentioned property. He left a note stating that he had borrowed the coat, but would be returning it, and that he was going to Napier. He may be identical with J. Mahon, referred to in preceding paragraph.

Hastings. —lsth January last, from a wool-shed, the property of HUGH CHESBOROUGH MILLS, St. George’s Road, a Wolseley shearing hand-piece, size 6, No. 30502 on back of cone ; value, £6. Identifiable.

Petone.- —Between the 28th April last and sth ultimo, from the club rooms, the property of the MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB, Lower Hutt, a ladies’ -22 calibre B.S.A. target rifle, No. 40878, No. 12 model, with canvas cover ; and a ladies’ -22 calibre single-shot B.S.A. target rifle. Identifiable.

Wellington.— Between the 18th and 20th February last, from a room in the Railway Hotel, Thorndon Quay, the property of DANIEL BURKE, Feilding, a gentlemen’s 18 ct. gold hunting Rotherhams watch, No. 372395, and B. 19411 scratched on inside case, “ D. 8.” on back, Arabic numerals, small star on white dial; value, £3O. Identifiable.

Wellington. the 11th ultimo, the dwelling of JOHN CAIRNS LAVERICK was broken into and the following stolen : A ladies’ 18 ct. gold 15-jewel open-face oval wristletwatch, Arabic numerals, chased front case and edge, 18 ct. gold expanding wristlet, a link of which has been repaired with two rolled-gold links; a silver brooch in shape of true lovers’ knot, set with brilliants; a silver brooch, set with a yellow stone; a gold brooch, half-moon shape, set with rubies and pearls ; a good straight bar brooch, set with large purple amethyst; a gold straight bar brooch, set with garnets; a white cameo brooch, set in gold; a gold square locketbrooch, with photo under glass ; an 18 ct. gold cross and chain; an 18 ct. gold engagement ring, set with three large sapphires and four small diamonds in straight alternate setting ; a 9 ct. gold cameo ring; a gold signet ring, set with heart-shaped purple amethyst; a gold ring, set with yellow stone and a ruby on each side of it; a pair of round jet black earrings ; a pair of red crystal drop earrings; a pair of black acorn-shaped earrings (all are on silver stems); a gentlemen’s silver hunting keyless pocket watch, bezel and glass missing ; a ladies’ rusty-brown or nigger gabardine overcoat, about 50 in. long, fully lined with checked woollen material, slanting pockets with buttons on them, three large bone buttons of lighter colour than coat, 2 in. belt of same colour as coat with metal buckle, small burn-hole which has been darned near left cuff; and an old post-office moneybox, oval with handle on top, containing about 4s. in money : total value, £6O Bs. Identifiable. It may possibly have been taken in error by some constable visiting Christchurch.
