MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION.

Constable for Duty at Samoa. A Constable is required for duty at Samoa, and applications are invited from unmarried Constables of not less than three years’ service who desire to proceed to Samoa for police duty in that Territory for a period of two or three years. Applicants should be in good health and not likely to be affected by the tropical climate. The Constable selected will be paid his present rate of pay, plus a tropical allowance of £6O per annum. Quarters will be provided, for which there will be a deduction of £1 4s. per annum from his pay. He will be required to leave for Samoa on the twenty-third proximo. Applications are to be submitted through the Officer in Charge of the District, who will express his opinion as to the applicant’s qualifications. W. G. Wohlmann, Commissioner of Police. Memorandum.] Prisoners’ Records. As the letters “ R and W ” indicating the prisoner is able to read and write are in these days of a fair standard of education practically worthless and meaningless, in future the

precise degree of education (or lack of it) is to be entered in police records, and such descriptions as the following are to be used instead:— Illiterate. Standard I, 11, 111, or as the case may be. Secondary School. College. University. When a prisoner is a “fireman,” this is to be defined as “ Railway Fireman,” “Ship’s Fireman,” or “ Fire-brigades-man ” as the case may be. •W. G. Memorandum.] Postal Addresses on Correspondence. In order to facilitate the sorting and delivery of correspondence, the Postal Department has divided the metropolitan areas of Christchurch and Dunedin into postal districts, each of which has been allotted a distinctive postal indicator. The two southern cities are thus brought into line with Auckland and Wellington. It is desired that the appropriate indicator be included in the address of all correspondence forwarded to places in the four metropolitan areas. Particulars of the districts and their indicators as far as Auckland and Wellington are concerned were published in the Police Gazette of the 26th October, 1932. The various districts and their indicators in respect of Christchurch and Dunedin are as under :
