Roscoe (name probably fictitious), age about thirty, height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair; wearing a dark overcoat and fawn felt hat with snap brim ; speaks quietly. Accused obtained £2 10s. cash from Ernest Craig and Herbert Ltd., coal merchants, High Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £2 18s. 6d. payable to “ 274,” and signed “ R. J. Bridges.” The cheque-form was one of two purchased from Rex Reginald Rayner, mercer, 22 Karangahape Road, by a man who gave the name J. R. Smith, and who is probably identical with Roscoe. The other cheque is referred to in following paragraph. No warrant.

-Auckland.— loth August last, for false pretences, _ N. Roscoe (name probably fictitious), age about thirty, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, fair complexion and hair; dressed in a grey suit and grey felt hat; good appearance. Accused obtained £2 7s. 6d. cash and a hat, value £1 Is., from Horace Bull, Ltd., Queen Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £3 Bs. 6d. No warrant. (See preceding paragraph.)

Complainant met McCrae in the Imperial Hotel and had several drinks with him. Subsequently accused induced complainant to lend him £3 ss. by falsely representing that he had his baggage at the Railway Hotel, and that the proprietress could not cash his cheque for £25. Accused obtained a leather suitcase (22 in. by 12 in. by. 6 in., double lock,"reinforced corners, fancy lining of striped material, nickel fastenings, “ Made by Woolf and Co., London,” on tag inside, value £3), from Leonard James Harper, cabinetmaker, by falsely representing that he was a relation of C. R. Thwaites, businessman, Rangiora. No warrant.

Timaru. —22nd June last, on warrant for false pretences, 6. Martin (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-five, height 5 ft. 10 in., strong build, fresh complexion, dark hair. Accused obtained the property described below, value £l2 10s., from Hallenstein Bros., mercers, Stafford Street, by falsely representing that he was a son of F. G. Martin, farmer, Otaio, South Canterbury : —a gentlemen’s navy-blue tweed doublebreasted overcoat, size 6, black Italian lining, striped glislade lining in sleeves, inset shoulders, vent in back, three black bone buttons on each sleeve, six buttons on front, H.B. tag inside collar ; and a navy-blue serge suit (made to measure), fit man 5 ft. 10 in. high and 41J in. chest ; and a gentlemen’s felt hat, manufactured by Woodrow and Son, “ The Cheshire ” style, leather band inside, with “H. 8.” stamped on it. He may be wearing the stolen clothing.
