Wellington. —sth ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, Walter Hansen, age about thirty-five, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, fresh complexion; dressed in grey tweed suit and cap. Accused obtained £6 ss. from James Jenkinson, of the Stewart Hardware Co., Courtenay Place, by means of a valueless cheque for £l2 55., tendered in payment for a dinner service and a set of carvers, which he said would be collected by a carrier from Levin. The carrier did not call for the goods, and the cheque has proved valueless. The cheque-form used was borrowed by accused from Mr. MacKenzie, dentist, Woodward Street, who has identified the photograph of Arthur Francis Cole, referred to in Police Gazette, 1934, page 107, and Photographs, 1932, page 69, as being like accused, and the writing-on, the cheque also resembles that of Cole.

He is advance agent for Barton’s. Circus, and travels in a dark-red light motor-truck with blue canvas hood over back, registration No. L. 5-078. The girl referred to left her home on the 9th ultimo, and travelled round Havelock and Picton with accused until the 14th, when he left her at her uncle’s home at Blenheim. On the 17th ultimo he was interviewed by the Blenheim police, but denied having had the girl in his truck.
