Dannevirke. —lßth January last, on warrant for theft of a cheque for £5 Bs., the property of James Burton Penny, auction-mart proprietor, James Senior McCardell, alias Frederick Thompson, age twenty-four (looks older), height 5 ft. 10 in., butcher, native of Scotland, medium build, fair complexion, auburn hair, blue eyes, scar on left palm and wrist; wearing a dark-brown suit, black shoes, felt hat, soft shirt with collar attached, no tie; fond of horse-racing; talkative. Accused assisted Samuel White Maxwell to deliver a consignment of tomatoes to complainant’s auction-mart. Later the accused called on complainant stating that he was the owner of the tomatoes and collected the cheque, which was payable to S. W. Maxwell or order. Accused forged the signature of S. W. Wellington. — November last, on warrant for false pretences, Maurice John Leight, referred to in Police Gazette, 1932, page 85. Accused obtained £6O from South Pacific Mortgage and Deposit Co., Ltd., Customhouse Quay, by falsely representing that a legacy, of £IOO bequeathed to him by Bridget Foley, of Blenheim, contingent on his attaining the age of twenty-five years, was not assigned, pledged, mortgaged, charged, or encumbered.

Wellington.— Chong, alias Chan Chuan, alias Dang Toon, ship-desertion, referred to in Police Gazette, 1928, page 100, and 1931, page 484. When offender was interviewed by the Hastings police on the 29th ultimo, he produced a poll-tax receipt issued at Wellington on the 30th January, 1908, to Lui Hok Keong, and stated that that was his name. His finger-prints were taken, and it has now been ascertained that he is identical with offender.
