Auckland.3lst July last, on warrant for theft of a screwdriver, a plane, and a spokeshave (recovered), a pair of oars and rowlocks, and a crosscut saw, total value £1 145., the property of Peter Andrew Smith, J. McKinnon (name probably fictitious), age about twenty-nine, height 5 ft. 10 in., engineer, slight build, dark complexion and hair; shabbily dressed. The property was stolen from a launch, and portion of it was sold to a second-hand dealer.

Auckland. —24th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for three months in default of paying £2O arrears due on a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Robert Charles Heron, referred to in Police Gazette, 1931page214 ' . zz/o/s/

Auckland. —On or about the 20th July last, on warrant for theft of £2, the property of Charles Cardinal Sainty, carpenter, Greenlane, Granville Hunt, age fifty-four, height 5 ft. 5 in., clerk, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, grey hair going bald, blue eyes. Accused was engaged by complainant to register a company to be known as “ Lumilight Ltd,” and was given £2 to pay to the Unity Press, Ltd., for books and stationery. He failed to pay the money, and disappeared. There are other charges pending. Arrears to 7th ultimo, £ll 10s. /ha. 'P-ff/ /7 V Cambridge. —Bth ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, C. Gander, alias Leonard William Jones (both names probably fictitious), age about thirty-seven, height about 6 ft. 1 in., medium build, sallow complexion, shaggy dark hair; dressed in a brownish or bluish-grey suit and felt hat. Accused obtained a sparking-plug and £2 9s. 6d. cash from Walter Basil Granger, motor mechanic, Victoria Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £2 15s. The cheque was from a cheque-book, No. 2AIIBOBI-2AIIBOIIO, issued to Leonard William Jones, who on the 3rd ultimo deposited £6 with the Union Bank of Australia, Wanganui, and on the same day issued a cheque for £5 10s. When opening the account he said he was a commercial traveller selling electric-light globes. He was in possession of a Plymouth motor-car, registration No. 95-950, and was accompanied by /a woman. On the Ist March, 1921, he registered a -45 six-chambered Gibbs revolver.

Gisborne. —21st ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Ada Ann Elavell, Francis Wilfred Flavell, alias Edwards, age forty-five, height 5 ft. 9 in., bushman, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eves. Levin.27th ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide for the maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, John Eghan McKenzie, age twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of Scotland, medium build, dark complexion, frizzy dark hair, blue eyes ; dressed in a navy-blue suit. Wellington. — loth June last, for theft of a gentlemen’s overcoat (recovered), value £7, the property of George Edwin Rimmington, salesman, Waitangi Boardinghouse, Boulcott Street, Douglas Phillips, age about thirty-two, height 5 ft. 9 in., good build, dark complexion and hair, square jaws ; dressed in a dark suit and grey cap. The coat was stolen from a room in the boardinghouse and sold to a second-hand dealer. The photograph of Douglas Malcolm Phillips, referred to in Police Gazette, 1927, page 22, has been, identified as that of accused. No warrant. /SmJ Vx, , *

Kaikoura. —18th ultimo, that a summons for a breach of his prohibition order may be served upon him, Joseph Machen, age about fifty, height 5 ft. 5 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, slight build, fair hair, blue eyes, thin face.

Timaru. — July last, on warrant for obtaining credit by fraud, James Williamson Wallace, alias Watson, alias Jackson, age twenty-eight, height 5 ft. 9 in., engineer, native of Scotland, medium build, pale complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, prominent nose, protruding upper teeth ; dressed in a light-brown or grey suit, light gabardine overcoat, felt hat, dark-tan shoes, and light suede gloves. Accused obtained from Percy Trethewey Davey, licensee Crown Hotel, board, value £4 45., by falsely representing that he was a mining engineer employed at Nightcaps.
