Murder. Palmerston North. —Between 11 p.m. on the 23rd and 7.40 a.m. on the 24th ultimo Edwin John Blakeway, clerk, Railways Department, was murdered by some person unknown. About 8 p.m. on the 23rd ultimo he visited Bessie Norah Meehan, Karere Road, and left there about 11 p.m. to cycle back to Palmerston North, a distance of about six miles. Next morning his dead body and bicycle were found on the roadside about half a mile from Miss Meehan’s dwelling. Two bullets of -22 calibre have been extracted from the body, which also shows two other bullet wounds. The firearm used was evidently a -22 calibre rifle or revolver (probably the latter), and was fired at close range. Several empty -22 calibre cartridge-shells, and a -22 calibre cartridge were discovered near the body. They were size -22 long, hard-nosed, Lubaloy coating of golden colour, manufactured by Western Cartridge Co., U.S.A. Shortly before leaving Palmerston North to visit Miss Meehan, Blakeway was known to have had £2O in his possession. Special efforts are to be made to obtain information calculated to afford a clue to the identity of the oftalder°Bend°r - wZfa bTe&W/ij- " Murder. Auckland. New - born child murdered. (See Police Gazette, 1931, page 509.) The mother of the child may be Mrs. Frances Mildred Hall, nee “ Peto,” who on or about the Ist ultimo was believed to be pregnant, and urgent inquiries are to be made to locate her and ascertain whether or not she has given birth to a child.
