Paeroa. —Between the 28th and 29th ultimo, the property of JAMES WILLIAMS and another, a grey sports coat, with small patch under pocket; a brown leather wallet containing photographs and papers ; a gentlemen’s brown tweed overcoat, with “ Blighty Tweed Mills, Nairn ” on tag and “ Veritas ” branded on collar ; a pair of gentlemen’s black lace-up shoes, size 7, three protectors and a toe-plate on each shoe ; a pair of gentlemen’s grey socks ; and 17s. in money: total value, £8 18s. 6d. The suspects had bed and breakfast at the boardinghouse of Mrs. Williams, Hall Street. They left without paying, and later the property was missed.

Taumarunui. 9th January last, in transit between Manunui and Auckland, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Railways Department), a Columbia gramophone, model 109 a, No. 2107 ; value, £ll. Not identifiable.

New Plymouth. —On the night of the 28th ultimo, the countinghouse of NEWTON KING, LTD., was broken into, and the following stolen : A cheque for £228 17s. sd. on the Bank of New Zealand, New Plymouth, No. 2476, drawn by the New Plymouth Sash and Door Company, and payable to Newton King, Ltd., or bearer, signed John Connett, director, and A. E. R. Gilbert, manager, stamped “Not negotiable, account of Newton King, Ltd., only ; a cheque for £4 10s. on the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., New Plymouth, No. 006320, payable to the estate of S. W. Shaw or order, and signed C. W. Cook and N. B. Howell; a cheque for £3l 10s. on the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ltd., New Plymouth, No. 114980, payable to Newton King, Ltd., and signed V. R. Waipukurau. —7th February last, from a room in the Lenathan Boardinghouse, the property of. HERBERT DOHERTY, railway porter, Lambton Station, Wellington, a gold-filled Elgin watch, No. 2433837 ; a gold chain with small narrow links; and a gold medal with “H.D., L.C.C. Presented by Lambton Cricket Club, mostim proved player ” engraved on it: total value, £l3 13s. Identifiable.

Dannevirke. —Between the 3rd and 7th ultimo, the dwelling of LEO STEIN, 34 Gordon Street, was broken into and the following stolen : A plain gold bangle; a pair of gentlemen’s brown kid gloves, size 9 ; a two-cell nickel torch ; about 200 silver and bronze coins ; and Bs. in money : total value, £27 18s. Dannevirke. Between the 2nd and 7th ultimo, the dwelling of JOHN J. DOWNEY, 32 Gordon Street, was broken into and the following stolen: A gold sovereign brooch, with safety chain and pin attached ; a gold bangle, with three rubies and three pearls set in a horse-shoe on it; a gold single albert watch-chain, with gold sovereign-case attached ; a gold-bar brooch, with heart in centre set with pearls; a gold signet ring, with “E. 8.” in monogram engraved on it (may have “23/7/18,” engraved inside); and a suit of Luvisca pyjamas, cream with wide blue stripes : total value, £2O. Between the 26th and 27th March last, from a motor-car in Brandon Street, the property of HAROLD WEDGWOOD HOLMES, Kawatiri, Paraparamu, a leather suit-case, size 30 in. by 8 in., “ 11.W.H.” in gold letters on it; a leather attache-case, size 18 in. by 5 in., “ H.W.H.” in gold letters on it; a light-fawn Jaeger dressing-gown ; a blue serge suit with extra pair of trousers, fit a man about 6 ft. 3 in. ; a pair of black Rostock brogue shoes, size 11 papers with “ Wedgwood Oil Co.” and “ Holmes ” on them ; a number of shirts, singlets, handkerchiefs, ties, &c. Some of the articles may have “ Buckley and Nunn, Bourke Street, Melbourne,” and “ Holmes ” marked on them : total value, £4B. Identifiable.

Between the 15th February and 26th March last, from a room, the property of WOLF MOSS, Trafalgar Street, Johnsonville, a pair of field-glasses, about 41 in. long, black leather covering, dent in left eye-piece, centre adjustment, scratch on barrel to mark focus ; and a double-barrelled breech-loading shot-gun, No. 129595, 12 bore, made by Bonehill, London, in brown canvas case : total value, £43. Wellington. 6th ultimo, from a bath-room in the Hotel St. George, the property of TERESA MAHONEY, 1 Portland Crescent, an 18 ct. gold ring set with four rows of diamonds, three in each row and one on each side ; value, £ls. Identifiable.

It was subsequently discovered that the following watch, the property of the occupier, was stolen : A gentlemen’s openface silver watch, “ H. Norrie ” scratched on inside of case, branded “ The Limit ”on dial; value, £2 10s. Identifiable.

Lyttelton, —Between the 20th and 21st March last, from the office of the Mitre Hotel, the property of JAMES HENRY DUNCAN, Dunedin, a brown leather attache-case, size 18 in. by 12 in., with “G.T.L.” in black letters on it, containing a box Kodak camera, ship’s accounts, letters, &c. : total value, £2. Hampden. Bth January last, the property of JAMES MILLAR MARSHALL, Mahano, a light-bay pony mare, height 14 hands, age six years, black streak running down back, black points ; value £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to John B. Steele, age about forty, height about 5 ft. 6 in., labourer and guide, medium build, dark complexion and.hair, blue-grey eyes, shrapnel wounds on arms, drags one leg when walking ; dressed in a shabby tweed suit and felt hat; talkative about deer shooting. Tapanui. —On the night of the 25th ultimo, the premises of PHILLIP BOYLE N, storekeeper, Kelso, were broken into and the following stolen : A Tucker cash-till (recovered) ; a quantity of Players cigarettes ; sardines ; biscuits ; and £8 in silver: total value, £9 os. Clinton. 3lst January last, the property of WILLIAM BROWN, a letter containing a cheque for 125., No. 445, in favour of Marwick Bros., Clinton ; a "cheque for 19s. 6d., No. 446, in favour of R. Groves, Balclutha.; a cheque for £l3 2s. 9d., No. 447, in favour of Grand Lodge, 1.0.0. F. ; a cheque for £6, No. 448, in favour of G. Gridgeman, Clinton ; all cheques on the Bank of New Zealand, Clinton, and dated 28th January, 1931. Suspicion is attached to James Booth (name probably fictitious), age about seventeen, height 5 ft. 3 in., slight build, dark complexion and hair; wearing dark clothes and cap ; slouching gait. The letter containing the cheques was posted by Harry Evered Steel, farmer, Wairuna, addressed to William Brown, Secretary, Popotunoa Lodge, Clinton. Cheque No. 445 was cashed in a store at Waipahi on 31st January, 1931, by the suspect.
