Whangarei. — l2th instant, for false pretences, Man (name unknown), age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 7 in., supposed showman, dark complexion, clean-shaved; dressed in a grey suit and felt hat. Accused, at .the Agricultural Show, Waiotira, obtained a cheque for £25 from Benjamin Babe, farmer, Waiotira, by falsely representing that he was collecting for the earthquake fund. Soon afterwards an attempt was made to have the cheque cashed at Tauroroa Store by one of four men who were travelling in a motor-car, No. 39 : 190, which is registered in the name of Basil Fleming, Prince Arthur Hotel, Auckland. At the Agricultural Show, Waiotira, accused enticed George Worth Rountree, farmer, Waikiekie, to participate in an unlawful game—“ Spin the Arrow ” —at which he lost £3l ss. He paid them by two cheques (one for £2O and the other for £10) and the balance in cash. One of the cheques was subsequently cashed at the Bank of Australasia, Whangarei. No warrant. He was in partnership on a road contract with complainant, who gave him three cheques to have cashed and pay their employees. He cashed the cheques at the Union Bank of Australia, Te Kuiti, but failed to pay the men. He may be identical with Matthew Joseph Spellars, referred to in Police Gazette 1930, page 369, and it is believed that he was previously known by the name Mat Spalick. / /
