Auckland.On or about the 2nd April last, on warrant for false pretences, Joseph Hall, alias Clifford Slack, alias Cecil Elliott, age about forty, height about 5 ft. 10 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair; dressed in a coarse tweed grey suit, soft felt hat, and heavy tan boots ; erect gait; blinks incessantly. Accused - obtained an H.M.V. upright grand gramophone in antique oak cabinet with ornamental front, Model 193, size 44 in. by 25 in. by 22 in., releasing automatic brake, and twelve I 12 in. Columbia and H.M.V. records Nos. 961, 9198, 02539, ! 02525, C 1330, C 1285, 1313, 1329, D. 8.142, 325, DI4BO, and 1088, total value £74 55., from Alfred Hegman, manager, Charles - Begg and Co., musical-instrument dealers, Customs Street East, by falsely representing that he was recommended by Clifford Slack, Papakura, and that he had just bought a farm at Te Kuiti. Auckland. 6th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, John McArthur, age thirty-five, height 5 ft. 2 in., seaman and labourer, native of Scotland, stout build, florid complexion, grey hair, blue eyes, large nose, large flat feet; limps ; dressed in a navy-blue suit and grey felt hat. Accused obtained a shirt, a pair of socks, and a tie, value £l, and £1 cash from Bernard Cohen, 100 Hobson Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £2. There are other charges pending. He travels in the country districts with his son (age twenty), and they use in connection with their business a caravan drajfn by a light-bay horse.

Accused obtained a suit, a cardigan, a pair of trousers, a pair of braces, two pairs of shoes, a tie, and a pair of socks, value £l2 19s. 9d., from Henry Benjamin Edhouse, draper, Main Street, by falsely representing that he had a contract with Odlin’s for cutting sleepers at Beikorangi, and employed about six men. j V

Wellington. 3rd instant, on warrant for deserting from the motor-ship “ Karamea,” Victor George Sharp, age twentyone, height 5 ft. 8 in., scullion, fair complexion and hair, grey eyes.

Blenheim. —lßth ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Nelson Prison for one month in default of paying £3 arrears due on a maintenance order for the support of his child, Daniel Redfearn, age thirty-seven, height 5 ft. 84 in., labourer, native of England, medium build, pale complexion, dark hair, brown eyes ; scroll and “ Death before dishonour ” on right forearm, badge on inside of left forearm ; slightly roundshouldered ; usually dressed in a dark-grey suit and lightgrey cap ; slovenly appearance ; fond of drink.

Christchurch. —Between the Ist July and the 31st August last, on warrant for theft of £SO, the property of Dimond and Hart, Ltd., portrait-painters, 4 Marion Street, Wellington, Thomas Gowland Clarke Reed, age thirty-four, height 5 ft. 6f in., steward and canvasser, native of England, medium build, sallow complexion, black hair, blue eyes, large nose ; “ T.R.” and Union Jack on right forearm; scar on tip of left thumb ; dressed in a grey suit and hat, or heather-mixture suit and brown hat. Accused, who was employed by the Christchurch agent (Ernest Edward Pennington) of the abovementioned firm, received £SO on terms requiring him to pay it into the firm’s trust account, but fraudulently omitted so to do. There is another charge pending. He may endeavour to leave this Dominion. (See Police Gazette, 1927, page 772.)

Accused obtained £1 from Frederick Ernest Sutton, land-agent, by falsely representing that his name was Lambert, that he was at Westport when the earthquake occurred, and that he had to leave there owing to the shock to his nerves.
