Accused obtained £3 14s. 6d. / from David Alexander Murray, boardinghouse-keeper, Rangataua, by means of a valueless cheque for £5 10s., which he tendered in payment for his board. Whilst he was staying at complainant’s boardinghouse two cheques were stolen from the cheque-book of Earle Frederick Clay Hextall, schoolteacher, each of which has been cashed for £l4 10s.—one at Wanganui and the other at Stratford. Christchurch. — 26th April last, on warrant of commitment to Paparua Prison for four days in default of paying £1 17s. fine and costs for driving a motor-cycle without a headlight, John Charles Witherington, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, brown eyes. Accused obtained a pair of gentlemen’s tan Constitutional shoes, size 7, and a pair of gentlemen’s black Bostock boots, size 7, total value £3 11s., from Chisnall and Stewart, boot-importers, Colombo Street, by falsely representing that he was a brother of A. Stewart, Chertsey, and that the boots were for the latter. He is thought to be identical with William McAuliffe, who was recently employed by A.
