(recovered), the property of Alexander John Hatfield, farmer, Waiwera, William Venice Aifkeri, alias William Vanis Aitken, alias William Vanis Foot, age thirtythree, height 5 ft. 6 in., mechanic and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, dark-brown hair, brown eyes ; no upper teeth; dressed in a grey suit and cap. Accused, who was employed by complainant, stole the money and left his employment, but was subsequently overtaken on the road and interrogated by his employer, who recovered the money. He may be in possession of a pair of grey trousers, grey coat, tennis shoes, and a gold stud, which he borrowed from his employer, Phillip Devereaux Smith, sawmiller, Tunetunekote, stating that he desired to go to Taumarunui to buy some clothing and would return the borrowed articles, together with 10s. which he also borrowed, on the following Monday. /J2Q

Accused obtained a turquoise-blue taffeta silk evening-frock with short sleeves (braces from shoulders to waist in front, floral design in front which enlarges towards bottom of frock), value £3 7s. 6d., from Archibald McHutchinson, outfitter, Devon Street, by falsely representing that she had been sent for the dress by Mrs. Robertson, 99 Hine Street. No warrant.

New Plymouth. 2lst December last, for false pretences, Mrs. Oliver, age about forty, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, fair complexion, dark hair ; dressed in a cream frock. Accused obtained a ladies’ thin white straw hat with fairly wide brim (edged with velvety material, two round flowers of velvet material on right side, value £1 2s. 6d.), from Ida Helen Barnard, milliner, Devon Street, by falsely representing that her husband was employed in the Post-office, and that she lived in Brougham? Wellington. 24th January last, that proceedings for failing to register a double-barrel breech-loading shot-gun may be instituted against him, Donald De Wet Rucker, veterinary surgeon, native of America. He arrived at Wellington from San Francisco on the 14th January last, and was granted a permit, No. 2671, to bring the shot-gun into New Zealand. As he said he was leaving for Auckland next day he was instructed to register the weapon there, but he has failed to do so.

Wellington. —llth ultimo, that proceedings for failing to register a -22 calibre Savage rifle may be instituted against him, Robert Malcolmson, age twenty-four, farm hand, native of Ireland. He arrived at Wellington from Sydney on the 29th January last, and was granted a permit, No. 2678, to bring the rifle into New Zealand, and he was instructed to have it registered within seven days. Registration has not been effected.

Wellington. —lsth instant, on warrant for false pretences, G. Payne (name probably fictitious) ; dressed in a black serge or worsted suit, greyish-fawn soft hat, blue-grey mottled tie, one upper tooth missing and other teeth discoloured. Accused obtained £lO from James Smith (Limited), furnishers, &e., Manners Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £SO on the National Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, which he tendered in payment for furniture, value £4O. The furniture was sent to the address given by him—64 Upland Road, Wellington — it was found that he rented the house, but never occupied it. There are other similar charges pending. On the Bth instant he opened an account at the National Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, in the name of G. Payne, depositing £25, and was supplied with a cheque-book, Nos. V. 14041-14064.
