Auckland.— ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for seven days in default of paying £3 14s. fine and costs for negligently driving a motor-car, Cufhbert J. Griffin, age about twenty-six, height 5 ft. 5 in., taxi-driver, native of England, strong build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, brown eyes ; dressed in a plum-coloured check suit, or may be wearing a light sports coat.

Auckland. —20Eli ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Kathleen Dorothy Strangeways, 33 Tennyson Avenue, John Strangsways, age thirty-three, height 5 ft. 44 in., traveller, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, darkbrown hair, grey eyes, left leg artificial; dressed in a lightgrey suit and felt hat, and carries a walking-stick ; frequents hotels. Auckland. 27th ultimo, for theft of a diamond engage-ment-ring (recovered), value £26, the property of Duran and Sons, jewellers, Two Men (names unknown)(l) age about -three, height about 5 ft. . 7 in., good build, -brown hair and eyes ; dressed in a brown suit and brown felt hat: and (2) age about twenty-five, height about 5 ft. 3 in., slight build ; dressed in a dark suit and dark felt hat. The accused, who represented that they desired to buy a ring, were shown some, but did not make a purchase, stating that they would call later. After their departure the above-mentioned ring was missing. It was subsequently found in Lyndock Street. No warrant.

Auckland. — On or about the 30th December, 1926, for theft of a military saddle-cloth (recovered), value 12s. 6d., the property of the New Zealand Government (Defence Department), Hubert John Holliday, age twenty-one, height 5 ft. 5 in., labourer, native of Canada, strong build, fresh complexion, fair moustache; erect gait; talkative. He left Auckland by the s.s. “ Niagara ” for Canada on the 21st November last. The saddle-cloth was recovered at a pawnshop. No warrant.

Auckland. 7th ultimo, for attempted theft of a ladies’ handbag containing 35., total value £1 os. 6d., the property of Hilda Ethel Buckley, 27 Selborne Road, Surrey Crescent, Man (name unknown), age about twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 6 in., medium build ; dressed in a grey suit and grey cap. About 9.30 p.m., in Selborne Road, accused attempted to snatch complainant’s handbag from her. No warrant.

Auckland. 3rd instant, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for six months in default of paying £7O arrears due on a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Arthur Robert Orr, age forty-one, height 5 ft. 6 in., carpenter, native of Australia, slight build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes. -€^>_

Auckland. —l3th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, Harry Winter (name probably fictitious), age about fortyseven, height about 5 ft. 9 in., seaman and labourer, strong build, dark ruddy complexion, dark hair ; dressed in a dark heavy tweed suit and dark-grey cap. Accused obtained a gramophone and twelve records, value £l9 75., from the Farmers’ Trading Company by falsely representing himself to be the boatswain on the Admiralty oiltanker “ Nucula.” The property, with the exception of five records, were recovered at a pawn-shop.

Onehunga. 4th ultimo, on warrant for failing to maintain his wife, Marjorie Harris, and two children, Robert James Harris, age -three, height 6 ft. 1 in., cook and

labourer, native of Jamaica,- strong build, dark complexion, curly black hair, brown eyes ; dressed in a blue or grey suit and black shoes ; slovenly gait; plausible ; fond of drink. (See Police Gazette, 1927, page 853.)

Gisborne. 3rd instant, that she may be compelled to maintain her child, Rangi Kerr, in the care of the Education Department, MiHicent Gook, nee Thompson, age thirty, height 5 ft., domestic, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, round features; usually well dressed in a brown costume.

New Plymouth. —2nd instant, _on warrant for obtaining credit from Richard Kendrick, taxi-driver, Victoria Road, to the amount of £ls by fraud, James Stewart Weldon, ago sixty, height 5 ft. 4 in., engineer, native of Scotland, strongbuild, fresh complexion, fair hair turning grey, brown eyes, clean-shaved; dressed in a grey tweed suit and grey felt hat. Accused engaged the complainant to drive him from New Plymouth to Marton and back to Wanganui. At the latter town he disappeared without paying the fare, £ls. New Plymouth. 2nd instant, on warrant for unlawfully taking Laura Margaret Bartle, age eight, out of the possession of her parents, Laura Mary Breach, age forty-seven, height 5 ft. 11 in., married, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion and hair, grey eyes ; left hand amputated. During the absence of Mary Bartle and her husband from their home at Oaonui, accused (who is a sister of Mrs. Bartle) took the child away, and it is thought that she and her husband may endeavour to leave this Dominion.

Stratford. Bth instant, that summonses for driving a motor-cycle in a dangerous manner and driving without a license may be served upon him, John Henry MePhee, age about seventeen, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair fuzzy hair, brown eyes, good teeth ; usually does not wear a hat.

Wanganui. — On or about the 7th March last, for theft of a pair of gum-boots (recovered), value £l, the property of William Lind, Joe Harris (name probably fictitious), age about thirty, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, medium build, dark complexion and hair, clean-shaved; dressed in a blue suit and light cap. The boots were stolen from saleyards at Wanganui and sold at a second-hand shop. No warrant.

Masterton. —Between the sth and 11th ultimo, on warrant for breaking and entering the premises of William Winter, coachbuilder, and steaking therefrom three motor-tires, &c. (recovered), value £7, the property of Colin McLauchlan, mail-contractor(l) Cecil Cask, age about twenty-six, height 5 ft. 7 in., painter, native of Australia, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair ; usually dressed in grey Oxford bags and navy-blue coat: and (2) Reginald Harding, age about thirty, height about 5 ft. 9 in., painter, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair; dressed in a light-brown suit with double-breasted coat. Wellington. — or about the sth ultimo, on warrant for forgery, W. WhaMey, age thirty, height about 5 ft. 5 in., cook, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow complexion, light-brown hair going bald, clean-shaved ; dressed in grey Oxford bags, grey check sports coat, and grey cap. Accused forged the name Horace Baker to a cheque for £9 14s. on the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, in favour of W. Whalley, and uttered it to . Gilbert James Young, licensee, City Hotel. Wellington.— lnquiries are to be made for Marion Marks (married, native of England), who arrived at Wellington by the s.s. “ Corinthic ” on the 7th January, 1925, and obtained permit, No. 4077, to import a double-barrelled breech-loading shot-gun and a -22 calibre B.S.A. rifle. She has failed to register the firearms in accordance with the provisions of section 9, Arms Act, 1920.

Wellington.— Barnard McDonald, alias O’Donnell, default of maintenance, is now wanted at Auckland on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for three days in default of paying £1 18s. fine and costs for a breach of his prohibition order. (See Police Gazette, 1928, page 324.)

Wellington. —loth ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his illegitimate child, of whom Magdeline Gerbich is the mother, George HinchSey, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 7 in., mechanic and marine engineer, native of New Zealand, strong build, olive complexion, light-brown hair, light-grey eyes, high, cheek-bones ; dressed in a navy-blue suit, light fancy socks, and patent-leather shoes. Arrears to 16th ultimo, £55 13s.

Wellington. —9th instant, on warrant for failing to maintain his wife, Doris Hays, and child, Hubert Horace Kays, age twenty height about 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, native of Australia, strong build, dark complexion, black hair, broken nose, may have scar on lip ; dressed in a navy-blue or grey suit and tan shoes. Accused obtained from Simon Crase, Gilmer Hotel, £lO by means of a valueless cheque for that amount signed “A. E. Smith.” The photograph of Alfred Ernest Smith, alias Arthur Watson, referred to in Police Gazette, 1928, page 228, and Photographs, 1920, page 12, has been identified as that of offender. Dunedin. —On or about the 30th January last, on warrant for theft of £29 Is. 9d. in money, the property of the Provident Life Assurance Company, Rattray Street, Archibald Gillies, age about thirty-one, height 5 ft. 6 in., canvasser, native of Scotland, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair ; usually well dressed in a grey suit; smart appearance. Accused was employed by complainants, and received the money on terms requiring him to account for or pay the same to his employers, which he. .failed to do. 979/2*
