The hats were stolen from the Settlers’ Hotel, and were subsequently recovered at Hikurangi from Frederick John Holt, to whom they were given by accused.

Accused, who was employed by complainant, stole from , him the above cheque, and received cash for it from Messrs. Manning and Moody, retailers, Auckland. He is believed to have assumed the name W. Kent, and to have left Auckland for Australia by the s.s. “ Maunganui ” on the 17th ultimo. He may be accompanied I by John. McShane (age sixteen, height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair), who may assume' the name W. J. Kent, and represent himself to be accused’s brother.
