Auckland. — James Newburne, failing to maintain : It has been ascertained by the Auckland police that his correct name is Millard James Mewburn. (See Police Gazette, 1927, page 539.)

Auckland. Bth August last for false pretences, B. Holt (name probably fictitious), age about fifty-eight, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, sallow complexion, grey hair and moustache, blue eyes, red nose, walks with a stoop. Accused obtained £3 4s. from John Parry, grocer, 626 Manukau Road, Epsom, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount on the Bank of New South Wales. No warrant.

Auckland. — ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintainance order for the support of his three children in the care of the Education Department, William Edgar Basham, age thirty, height sft in., carter and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes, scar on inside of right ankle. (£2 16s. and £3 165.) fines and costs for breaches of the Motor-vehicles Act, William Eric Hutchinson, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 5 in., motor-driver, native of New Zealand, medium, build, dark complexion, curly brown hair, brown eyes.

Pukekohe. 26th July last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for four days in default of paying £3 6s. Bd. fine and costs for obtaining credit by fraud, William Alfred Roycroft, age thirty-seven, height 5 ft. 7 b in., carter and trapper, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes. Hamilton. —6th ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his illegitimate child, of whom Vera Jane Davis is the mother, Ernest Tiswell Shaw, age twenty-nine, height 5 ft, 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, dove on left forearm, anchor on right forearm. New Plymouth. 22nd oil time, on warrant for theft of a small canvas tent (recovered), value £2 55., the property of Samuel Joseph Watson, second-hand dealer, Ariki Street, Frederick Hayward (name probably fictitious), age about forty, height sft. 8 in., medium build, dark complexion; dressed in a blue suit. Accused stole the tent from complainant’s shop, and sold it to a dealer for £l. He was accompanied by another man, who gave the name Doyle (age about twenty-five, height about 5 ft. 11 in., fair complexion), and they are also suspected of having unlawfully used a motor-ear, which was subsequently found' abandoned.. Hawera. —22nd ultimo, on warrant for false pretences,' Hori Thompson, alias Henry Thompson, alias Rehu Hui Kai, alias H. Ryne, age thirty-six, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, Maori, medium build, copper complexion, curly black hair, brown eyes; heart, fern, “Eileen” and “Winnie” on right forearm ; “H, K. Rehu, 16/492,” heart, and dagger on left forearm. Accused obtained from Edward C&nn, licensee, Commercial Hotel, £1 10s. in money by means of a valueless cheque for £IOO. He was to call later for the balance, but failed to do so, and the cheque was found to be valueless (See Police Gazette, 1927, page 682, and Photographs, 1921, page 16.) /2-fO- "7-

Feilding. —lsth ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Fred Hoult, age thirty-eight, height 5 ft. 6| in., farmer and horse-dealer, native of New Zealand, slight build, ruddy complexion, brown hair, blue eyes ; dressed in a grey suit, or may wear riding-breeches and leggings and felt hat; frequently engages in preparing horses for show purposes; smart appearance. Arrears to the 15th ultimo_Z£2o. r* t 'oJ rpi Dannevirke. — 16th August last, on warrant for theft of an overcoat (recovered), value £B, the property of Christopher Sylvester Dodd, labourer, Henry Duncan Morton, age forty-five, height 6 ft., labourer, strong build, pale complexion, dark hair going bald ; dressed in gabardine trousers, grey sports coat, brown shoes, and blue felt hat; well spoken ; good appearance. Accused borrowed the coat from complainant and pawned it for £2. y/^/sy.

Palmerston North.— On or about the 18th July last, on warrant for false pretences, W. J. Goode, age about thirty-five, height 6 ft., canvasser and salesman, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes, gold stopping in upper teeth ; usually well dressed in a dark suit. Accused obtained goods, value £2 11s., and £l4 Bs. fid. cash from Norman Herbert Sinclair, manager, Watson Bros., by means of a valueless cheque for £l7 on the Commercial Bank of AP/yVP.

Pahiatua. About 26th June last, for theft of a pair of motor-gloves (recovered), value £1 4s. 6d., the property of Joseph Emden, cycle-dealer, Lionel Mangham, age twentyfour, height sft 6 in., native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, auburn hair, blue eyes. His photograph is filed in the Inspector’s office, Palmerston North. The gloves were stolen from complainant’s shop, and on or about the 19th July last a similar pair were sold at Lower Hutt by a man giving the name Hugh Grant. The photograph of Andrew Alexander Clark, alias H. Hepburn, alias Harold Conway, referred to in Police Gazette, 1925, pages 248 and 433, has been identified as that of accused, and he may be identical with A. Clark, referred to in Police Gazette, 1922, page 178; Hugh H. Grant, Police Gazette, 1927, page 571 ; Jack Harris, Police Gazette, 1927, page 586; and Hugh Vernon Ponsford, Police Gazette, 1927, page 622. He is also suspected of stealing £3 7s. 6d. at Pahiatua, the property of Frederick Albert Rasmussen. No warrant.

Masterton. —15th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for three days in default of paying £1 10s. fine and costs for riding a bicycle without a light, Metal Waaka, age twenty-three, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, Maori, slight build, copper complexion, bushy black hair, brown eyes ; usually dressed in a navy-blue suit, tan shoes, and felt hat; speaks good English; frequents dance-halls, and usually plavs in orchestras ; smart appearance. /?u,k

Wellington. 23rd ultimo, for failing to comply with the conditions of his release upon probationary license, Peter Kevil Johnston, age thirty-one, height 5 ft. 74 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes ; scar on top of head, near right hip, and on each leg. His license has been cancelled, and his return to the nearest prison is desired. His period of probation expires on the 16th November, 1927, after which no action is to be taken. Wellington. —2lst ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for one month in default of..paying £7 10s. arrears due on a maintenance order for the support of his illegitimate child, of whom Freda Smith is the mother, Patrick O’Kane, age forty-four, height 5 ft. 10 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes, mole on right jaw and on left temple. Arrears computed to the 15th July last. (See Police Gazette, 1927, page 494,)

Wellington. —Bth July last, for theft of a gentlemen’s silver Elgin watch (recovered), value £4, the property of Charles Frederick Lumley, mechanic, 7 Moa Street, Lower Hutt, Anthony Shannon, alias John Shannon, alias John Sharman, alias Thomas Shannon, age forty-seven, height 5 ft. 7b in., labourer, native of New Zealand, strong build, fresh complexion, grey hair, blue eyes, crooked nose ; scar near right eye, on left palm, on chin, and on upper lip. He is to be interviewed regarding the watch, which was found in his possession when arrested for drunkenness by the Mount Cook police. It was retained by the police, and inquiries revealed that it had been stolen from a dwelling at Lower Hutt. No warrant.
