Auckland. — 14th December last, on warrant for remaining in New Zealand after expiration of temporary permit, Menhga Singh, age twenty-two, farm labourer, native of India, dark complexion. Complainant, Collector of Customs, Auckland. This is the same man as referred to in Police Gazette, 1927, page 61, and he has not been arrested as is stated in Police Gazette, 1927, page 197. Mengha Singh referred to at the latter Police Gazette reference, whose correct name is Manga Singh, was found to be not identical with the man for whom the warrant was issued.

Stratford. —On or about the 11th ultimo, on warrant for theft of a lavatory pan and flush-pipe (recovered), value £1 155., the property of Robert Henry Witt, farmer, Walter ROSS, age forty, height 6ft., butcher and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, brown eyes ; dressed in grey trousers, blue coat and vest, and cap ; erect gait. The articles were stolen from an old building recently occupied by the staff of the “ Taranaki Daily News,” and sold by accused to J. J. Sullivan.for 6s. Wanganui. —l7th December last, for theft of a bicycle (recovered), value £6 10s., the property of William Charles Harry Kiff, grocer, Fox Road, Mosstown, A. Storey (name probably fictitious), height about 5 ft. 8 in., medium build, fair complexion, light-brown hair ; dressed in light-grey trousers and -grey overcoat. Accused stole the bicycle from Tngestre Street and sold it to James Parnell, gardener, Victoria Avenue. He is identical with C. Ward, referred to in Police Gazette, 1926, page 732. Masterton. —9th ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, Douglas Charles Hopewell, alias Inwood, age twenty-eight, height 5 ft. in., surveyor, native of Canada, strong build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, small scar on back of neck, wearing a brown, rough, heavy-tweed overcoat and felt hat. Accused obtained a cigarette-case and £3 15s. cash from Leonard Spencer Nicol, jeweller, Queen Street, by means of a valueless cheque of £4 16s. He is also wanted at Auckland for failing to comply with the conditions of his release upon probation. (See Police Gazette, 1927, page 179, and Photographs, 4926, page 54.) s’**

Wellington. —llth January last, for theft of a gentlemen’s watch (recovered), value £7 75., the property of Joe King, laundryman, 281 Cuba Street, Mrs. Cooper (name probably fictitious), age about twenty-two, height 5 ft. bin., slight build, dark-brown hair, straight nose, pointed chin, thin features ; wearing reddish brown coat, light-coloured stockings, black shoes, and brown velour hat. Accused inquired at complainant’s premises for a certain Chinaman and was informed that he did not now occupy the shop. She went into the living quarters to see for herself, and subsequently the watch was missed. It was later pawned by a woman of the same description. No warrant.

Wellington. 2sth ultimo, on warrant for deserting from the s.s. “ Ruahine,” Thomas Sanderson, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 10 in. seaman, fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes. A reward of £2 is offered for his arrest.

Wellington. 2oth January last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for two months in default of paying £2l 9s. arrears due on a maintenance order for the support of his children, John Gordon, age forty-four, height 6 ft., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, lightbrown hair, blue eyes ; usually dressed in .a blue or grey suit. Arrears computed to 11th ultimo.

Wellington. 22nd December last, that a summons for a breach of the Licensing Act may be served upon him, James Casey, age forty-two, height 5 ft. 91? in., labourer, native of Australia, strong build, swarthy complexion, brown eyes, sandy moustache, heavy sandy eyebrows ; usually dressed in a’grey tweed suit and soft felt hat. Wellington. —22nd ultimo, for theft of ten fur coats (recovered), value £l7O, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company, James Sharp, age twenty-three, height ft., fireman, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, grey eyes, ship on left forearm, tombstone and “ In memory of my dear brother ” on right forearm, ship on back of right hand. The coats were stolen from the hold of the s.s. “ Ruapehu ” at Lyttelton, and were found on the 24th ultimo in Sharp’s “ bunk ” on the s.s. “ Piako ” at Wellington. The latter vessel was at Lyttelton when the offence was committed, and two days later Sharp deserted from the ship at Wellington. John Murphy, a fireman on the s.s. Ruapehu ” has admitted taking part in the offence, which he states was committed by him and Sharp. There is not sufficient evidence to charge the latter unless he admits the offence. No warrant '

Accused obtained from John Truscott, Mackay Street, the sum of £4 17s. by means of a valueless cheque, for that amount on the Bank of New Zealand, Reefton, signed L. A. Jacobs. The photograph of Douglas Charles Hopewell, alias inwood, referred to in Police Gazette, 1927, page 179, and Photographs, 1926, page 54, has been identified as that of offender. /-(o - y

Christchurch. — lst instant, on warrant for failing to maintain his illegitimate child, of whom Ethel Mary Smith, 10 Hawkhurst Road, Lyttelton, is the mother, Francis Joseph Walklin, age about twenty-three,. height 5 ft. 5 in., wharf labourer, native of New Zealand, sallow complexion, dark hair, blue-grey eyes, scar on lip ; in navy-blue suit.

OC v 7~ V * Timaru. 24th December last, on warrant for forgery and uttering, John Henry Avery, age fifty-two, height about 5 ft. 4 in., plasterer and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, ruddy complexion, brown hair going bald, blue eyes, prominent scar on right cheek, mole on centre of forehead fond of drink. Accused obtained £l9 14s. 2d. from W. D. Revell, secretary, Timaru Patriotic Society, by falsely representing that he had a contract with a Mrs. Ivy Peach, and gave an order on the moneys allegedly due to him signed by Mrs. Peach, the signature being a forgery.

Timaru. — 16th February last, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for one month in default of paying £4 15s. fine and costs for procuring liquor while prohibited, Cecil Francis, alias Ernest Brett, age thirty-eight, height 3 ft., street musician, native of New Zealand, slight build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, deformed legs. He plays a gramophone in the streets and moves about in a wheel-chair. (See Pohoe, fl—tte. IW7. **•*■)

Oamaru. — 31st January last, on warrant of commitment to Timaru Prison for twenty-four hours in default of paying £1 13s. fine and costs for drunkenness, Alexander Erholm, age forty-two, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer and seaman, native of Finland, medium build, fresh complexion, fain hair, blue eyes, fair drooping moustache, dove on left forearm, woman’s hand on right forearm ; speaks broken English ; wears a returned soldier’s badge. Dunedin. —30th ultimo, for failing to comply with the terms of his release upon probation (Offenders Probation Act, 1920), Joseph Thomas Woolley, age thirty, height 5 ft. 7 in., watchmaker, native of England, medium build, pale complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, large chin, scar on back of right hand, right hand deformed, two dots on left arm. He has failed to make full restitution, and there is a balance of £1 ss. still owing, (gee Police Gazette, 1923, page 152.)
