Accused inquired at complainant’s premises for a certain Chinaman and was informed that he did not now occupy the shop. She went into the living quarters to see for herself, and subsequently the watch was missed. It was later pawned by a woman of the same description. No warrant.

The coats were stolen from the hold of the s.s. “ Ruapehu ” at Lyttelton, and were found on the 24th ultimo in Sharp’s “ bunk ” on the s.s. “ Piako ” at Wellington. The latter vessel was at Lyttelton when the offence was committed, and two days later Sharp deserted from the ship at Wellington. John Murphy, a fireman on the s.s. Ruapehu ” has admitted taking part in the offence, which he states was committed by him and Sharp. There is not sufficient evidence to charge the latter unless he admits the offence. No warrant '
