Countly, referred to in following paragraph, obtained £l5O from Arthur Woolloton Gardiner, 179 Grafton Road, Auckland, by falsely representing that they were setting up in business at Wellington to take orders for portrait enlargements on behalf of the Ramsay Portrait Works, Sydney, and that for the above amount complainant had acquired the South Island rights to canvass for orders. Accused accompanied complainant to Wellington, where he (accused) received a telegram from his accomplice (Countly) to return urgently to Auckland, which he did, and disappeared. Auckland. - bag (recovered) and £lO in 10s. notes and silver from the person of Alfred Bryan, grocer, 39 Richmond Avenue, Grey Lynn, Man (name unknown), age about twenty-five, height about 5 ft. 10 in., strong build; dressed in light-grey tweed coat,

dark trousers, and felt hat. About 9.15 p.m., in a lane between Allen Road and Richmond Avenue, complainant was knocked down by accused, who snatched his bag and ran away. The bag-was subsequently recovered in a vacant section. No warrant.
