Palmerston North. —22nd instant, for theft of £220 (in £5 and £1 notes), the property of the Palmerston North Borough Council, Gurney, age about thirty-three, height about 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, dark complexion and hair ; dressed in dark working-clothes, soft collar, and heavy boots. On the return of the cashier to his office after a temporary absence therefrom he found a man, who gave the above name, behind the counter. He questioned the man, and after his departure the money was missed. Inquiries are to be made at shipping offices to ascertain if Gurney (believed to be his correct name) is endeavouring to leave this Dominion either as a passenger or as a member of the crew of some vessel.
