MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION.

Memorandum.] Maintenance of Illegitimate Children in Industrial Schools. The Education Department requests that when illegitimate children are committed to industrial schools the following procedure be adopted: — (1.) Where an affiliation and maintenance order has been made prior to the Magistrate’s order for a child to be sent to an industrial school, complaint be made at the time of committal ■ (a.) To cancel the maintenance portion of the affiliation order; and (6.) To obtain a new maintenance order under section 5 of the Destitute Persons Act, 1910. (2.) Where an affiliation and maintenance order would ordinarily be made by a Magistrate on the same day as he commits the child concerned to an industrial school, or where an affiliation and maintenance order would ordinarily be made subsequent to such committal, then complaint be made instead to obtain (a.) An affiliation order without any provision for maintenance therein; and (b.) A maintenance order under section 5 of the Destitute Persons Act, 1910.

This course is necessary in view of proceedings under the Maintenance Orders (Facilities for Enforcement) Acts in other countries.

A. H. Wright, Commissioner of Police. Wellington, 10th March, 1924. (P. 24/178.)
