MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION.
Circular, No. 8/20.] . - - Marriage.—Regulation No. 324. I am directed by the Right Hon. the Prime Minister to state for general information and guidance the principles on which the regulation quoted above is administered. (1,) It is essential that candidates for the Force are of unexceptionable character; it is equally essential and important that the proposed wives of members of the Force are and always have been of correspondingly good character. (2.) As no candidate for appointment to the Force is acoepted who is nearly related by consanguinity or otherwise to persons that have been convicted of crimes or other serious offences, or are of notoriously bad character, so also permission to marry women similarly related will not be granted to members of the Force. (3.) The foregoing statements do not exclude any other special matter which it is clear would be a reasonable and valid ground in the circumstances for refusing permission. J. O’Donovan, Commissioner of Police. Wellington, 25th August, 1920. (P. 20/1285.)
Napier Prison. The Controller-General of Prisons notifies that the prison at Napier has been reduced to a minor prison in which prisoners serving sentence not exceeding two months may be detained.
