MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION.

Resignations

No. 1747. Constable Goddard, John. 24th August, 1919. No. 1072. Constable Mclvor, Lewis Daniel. 31st August, 1919,

No. 1859. Constable Amies, John Alexander. 31st August, 1919.

Publicans on the Commission of the Peace

It is hereby notified that in all cases where Justices of the Peace hold publicans’ licenses a report is to be furnished. Members of the Force will please therefore report any such cases in their district, stating when the licenses in question were granted.

J. O’Donovan, Gommissioner of Police Wellington, 13th September, 1919. (P. 19/1656.)

Police Examination, 1919

For the information of candidates, I wish to say with regard to the papers set by myselfnamely, (1) the Police Force Act and Regulations, (2) Police and Detective Duties that the answers should be confined as strictly as possible to the terms of the questions. It must be understood that questions in the former paper being confined to the Police Force Act and Regulations matter outside the Act and Regulations, such as the provisions of other Acts, &c., should not be introduced into the answers. Being irrelevant no credit can be given for such extraneous matter, even though it may be in itself correct. Answers in the Regulations especially are frequently padded with irrelevant matter contained in Regulations not bearing on the question. Valuable time is thus lost by candidates. Frequently correct answers are given but are followed by conflicting alternatives. In such cases it is impossible to say whether the candidate knew the answer or not; or whether the right portion of the answer was merely guessed. Candidates should carefully scrutinize their papers to see that their answers are consistent. On this occasion a larger number of questions than usual are set in the papers referred to. This, instead of making the papers more difficult, has the effect of making them easier, as a wider scope is given to obtain the necessary percentage of marks on the questions which are answered. J. O’Donovan, Commissioner of Police.

P.G.

By Authority Marcus F. Marks, Government Printer, Wellington.
