DESERTERS FROM HIS MAJESTY’S SERVICE

From the New Zealand Expeditionary Force

Rawene. —7th June last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, James Divane, age thirty-four, height sft. 10in., farmer, native of Ireland, medium build, fresh complexion, black hair, hazel eyes, flat-footed.

Ponsonby. —l2th July last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, Patrick Fitzpatrick, age twenty-nine, height sft. Sin., carter or contractor, fresh complexion, dark hair, brown eyes. Next-of-kin, Miss Catherine Fitzpatrick, 16 Macandrew Road, Dunedin. (See Police Gazette, 1918, page 80.)

Auckland.—3lst May last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, Harry Rodgers, age forty-four, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, fair hair, gold filling in one front tooth.

Huntly. for failing to parade for medical examination, Herbert Dalton, age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 2 in., farm labourer, slight build, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes; usually dressed in a blue suit and soft-felt hat. (See Police Gazette, 1917, page 557.)

Te Awamutu. —3lst May last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, George Richard Young, age forty, height 5 ft. 2 in., stonemason, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair hair and complexion, small fair moustache.

Rotorua. —7th July last, on military warrant for failing to proceed to camp, David Campbell, age thirty-two, height 6ft., contractor, dark complexion, dark-biown hair, brown eyes.

Te Kuiti.— l6th July last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, Whakaahu Eruera, labourer, aboriginal.

Te Kuiti. —31st May last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, Henry Elrnest Martin, age thirty-two, height 5 ft. 10 in., bushman. He is believed to have one leg amputated.

Te Kuiti.—3lst May last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, William Stewart, age forty, height 5 ft. lOJin., labourer.

Te Kuiti. —15th July last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, Te Kahuhi Taratu, aboriginal.

Gisborne. —13th July last, on military warrant for failing to proceed to camp, Eugene Casey, age twentyone, height about 5 ft. 3 in., farm labourer, medium build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes; scar on right thigh. He may be identical with man of same name referred to in Police Gazette , 1917, page 432.

Taumarunui. —17th July last, on military warrant for failing to proceed to camp, William Gordon Clifford Dally, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. in., miner, fair complexion, light-brown hair.

Raurimu. for failing to parade for medical examination, Harry Fitzroy, age thirty-eight, labourer.

Stratford. —l3th June last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, Michael Francis O’Grady, alias Morgan, alias Pooley, age thirty-four, height sft. 11 in., bushman, native of Ireland, strong build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes.

Hastings. —3lst May last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, Joseph Hill, age thirty-one, height 5 ft. 11 in., farm labourer.

Taihape. —3lst May last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, Robert Henry Todd, age forty-two, height 5 ft. 7 in. labourer.

Mangaweka. —3lst May last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, Thomas Smith, age thirty-five, height 5 ft. 6 in., motor mechanic, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, black hair, blue eyes, tip off right forefinger.

Wanganui. —3lst May last, on military warrant fo r failing to parade for medical examination, Alfred Hartley, age thirty nine, height 5 ft. 9 in., engineer and fitter, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes.

Bull’s. —loth July last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, Harold Hariling Howell, alias P. Penthorp, &c., age twenty-nine, height 6ft. Jin., labourer, native of New Zealand, strong build, dark complexion, black hair turning grey, tattooed on right forearm. (See Police Gazette, 1915, page 504.)

Palmerston North. —3lst May last, on military warrant for failing to parade for medical examination, Arthur Cripp, age twenty-eight, meohanic.

Upper Hutt. —lst May last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, Norman Allen Wilton, age twenty-six, height 5 ft. 9Jin., shearer and slaughterman, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, brown eyes. Next-of-kin, William Henry Wilton (father), Carterton.

Upper Hutt. —27th June last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, Sidney Kimber, age thirty-one, height sft. Sin., engine-smith, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes.

Upper Hutt. —Bth July last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, Richard Nolan, age twenty, height 5 ft. 6Jin., tram-conductor, medium build, pale complexion, brown hair, blue-grey eyes.

Wellington. — Alfred Miners, deserting from Expeditionary Force: It has been ascertained by the Wellington police that offender is identical with Alfred Miners, referred to in Police Gazette, 1918, page 322, also with Fred Miners, referred to in Police Gazette, 1918, page 373. (See Police Gazette, 1918, page 403.)

Wellington.— Charles Aiken, failing to parade for medical examination: It has been ascertained by the Wellington police that offender deserted from the s.s. “ Manuka ” at Hobart on 2nd August, 1917. (See Police Gazette , 1917, page 478.)

Taranaki Street (Wellington). Wilfred Joseph Fryer, failing to parade for medical examination : It has been ascertained by the Queen Street Wharf (Auckland) police that offender left this Dominion as a seaman on the barque “Laura” on the 21st September, 1917, and signed off at Melbourne. He is identical with Wilfred Fryer, referred to in Police Gazette, 1917, page 565. (See Police Gazette, 1918, page 419.)

Mount Cook. — Guy Hill, failing to parade for medical examination: The following amended description has been supplied by the Mount Cook police: Height sft. 3fin., native of New Zealand, brown hair and e\es, pointed nose. He is identical with man of same name referred to in Police Gazette, 1909, page 453. (See Police Gazette, 1918, page 455.)

Cobden.—lll h April last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, William Wearn, age twenty, height 5 ft. 4Jin., engine driver, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes. (See Police Gazette, 1918, page 344.)

Greymouth. —loth July last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, Peirce Joseph Butler, age thirty-four, height 5 ft. 10J in., native of New Zealand, waterside worker and trucker, dark complexion, black hair, hazel eyes; slouching gait. He may be in company with a deserter named James Minchin.

Greymouth. —loth July last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, John Daly, age thirty, height 5 ft. sJin., bushman, native of Australia, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, small growth on left side of face, scar on right shoulder.

Greymouth. —9th July last, on military warrant for deserting from Expeditionary Force, Leslie Ferguson, age twenty-three, height 5 ft. Bin., native of New Zealand, bushman, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes.
