Accused forged the name of W. M. Evans (fruiterer, Queen Street) to two cheques for £97 7s. on the National Bank of New Zealand, and uttered them to that bank. He also forged an order for a cheque-book on the same bank, the numbers of which run from G 559273 to G 559296.

Auckland.— lßth ultimo, on warrant for failing to maintain his illegitimate child, Clarence Frederick Miller, age about twenty-one, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, slight build, slightly freckled complexion, curly dark-brown hair, grey eyes, scar on one leg. Winton, age twenty-seven, height 5 ft. in., labourer, native of New Zealand, good build, fresh tanned complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes; dressed in a grey suit, light-grey-tweed overcoat, and carries a walking-stick; erect gait; smart appearance; talks in a fluent convincing manner. Accused obtained lodging for a night from Albert Owen Casey, of the Foresters’ Arms Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque on the Bank of New South Wales, Wellington. Accused obtained goods value £4 3s. and £1 7s. in money from George Edwin Potter, boot-importer, 70 Lambton Quay, by means of a valueless cheque for £5 10s. The photograph of Joseph Thomas Christie, in Police Gazette, 1913, page 37, has been identified as that of accused. He also stole a Harley - Davidson motor-bicycle. No. W.N. 1519, chocolate colour. He may be identical with Joseph Thomas Christie, referred to in Police Gazette, 1917, page 723, and with E. W. Winton, Police Gazette, 1918, page 42. There are other charges pending. Accused obtained £1 11s. 6d. from Elsie Frances Porritt, Seatoun, by falsely representing through a newspaper that he was selling for 10s. 6d. each albums containing distinct photographs of every New Zealander who landed on Gallipoli, also photographs of the principal positions held while there. He will probably operate in a similar manner in other parts of the Dominion. There are other charges pending.
