(Prom Gazette, 1917, pages 1173-1184.) Shooting Season for Imported and Native Game, Ashburton Acclimatization District. LIVERPOOL, Governor. IN exercise of the powers vested in me by the Animals Protection Act, 1908, I, Arthur William cle Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby notify that the following imported game — viz., Californian and Australian quail—may be killed within the Ashburton Acclimatization District, comprising the County of Ashburton (except in the areas mentioned in the Schedule hereto), from the first day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, to the thirty-first day of July, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, both days inclusive, and do hereby restrict the number of quail that may be killed by any one person in any one day to twenty. And I do further notify that licenses to kill such imported game within the said district shall be issued to any person on payment of the sum of twenty shillings each, and that the Postmaster at Ashburton is hereby appointed to sign and issue the said licenses to kill imported game. And I do further notify that the following native game — viz., grey duck, pukeko, and black swan—may be killed within the above-mentioned district (except in the areas mentioned in the Schedule hereto) from the first day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, to the thirty-first day of July, one thousand ninejbundred and seventeen, both days inclusive. And Ido hereby restrict the number of such native game that may be killed by any one person in any one day to not more than twenty head in all.
SCHEDULE. Areas wherein Imported and Native Game shall not BE KILLED. 1. All that area in the Canterbury Land District, being the two small lakes known as Maori Lakes, situated in the Heron and Tripp Survey Districts, and the area included in a line running parallel to and twenty chains distant from the shores of those lakes. 2. All lands notified or set apart as sanctuaries or reserves for the preservation of imported or native game. SCHEDULE. Areas wherein Imported and Native Game shall not BE KILLED. 1. All that area in the County of Waitemata bounded on the north by the Wairau Creek from its mouth to the main road from Devonport to Waiwera; on the west by the said road to its junction with the Sea View Road ; on the south by that road to the sea ; and on the east by the sea to the point of departure. 2. All those areas at Waitakerei, Nihotapu, and Huia, in the County of Waitemata, vested in or under the control of the Auckland City Council for the purposes of waterworks, recreation, or the conservation of the native flora and fauna. 3. Little Barrier Island, Hauturu, Auckland (see New Zealand Gazette No. 104, of the 14th December, 1899, Dage 2266). 4. Hen and Chickens Islands. 5. All that area within a radius of three miles from the General Post-office, Auckland. 6. The Rangiriri (or Karaka) Lake, Waikato. 7. St. John’s Lake and area, adjacent (see New Zealand Gazette No. 43, of the 2nd May, 1901, page 986). 8. All that section, containing by admeasurement 141 acres, more or less, being the Hamilton Domain, including the Rotoiti or Hamilton Lake, Borough of Hamilton. 9. Fresh-water Lake, known aR Lake Hakanoa, near Huntly, Waikato, and an area of five chains in width surrounding the said lake. 10. All that part of the Waihou River between the Waiorongomai Bridge and the Mangaiti Bridge over such river. 11. Great Barrier Island County. 12. Auckland Acclimatization Society’s Game Farm at Drury. 13. Area near Te Kuiti (see New Zealand Gazette No. 20, of the 24th February, 1916, page 568). 14. All lands notified or set apart as sanctuaries or reserves for the preservation of imported or native game. And I do further notify that licenses to kill

And Ido further notify that licenses to kill such imported game within the said district shall be issued to any person on payment of the sum of twenty shillings each; and the Chief Postmaster at Gisborne is hereby appointed to sign and issue the said licenses to kill imported game. And Ido further notify that licenses to kill such imported game within the said district shall be issued to any person on payment of the sum of twenty shillings each; and the Postmasters at Feilding, Kimbolton, Apiti, Halcombe, Pohangina, Raneiwahia, and Ashhurst are hereby appointed to sign and issue the said licenses to kill imported game. All that area in the Wellington Land District bounded towards the north by the Kawhatau and Pourangaki Streams from the Rangitikei River to the summit of the Ruahine Range ; thence towards the east generally by the summit of that range to the Manawatu Gorge, and by the Manawatu River to the Raukawa Road; thence towards the south generally by that road which forms the north-eastern boundaries of Sections Nos. 455 and 454, Block VIII, Kairanga Survey District, to the Palmerston - Ashhurst Road ; thence by that road to Stony Creek Road ; thence by that road and the railway-line to the Oroua River ; thence by that river to Awahuri; and thence by the Awahuri-Bull’s Road to the Rangitikei River; and towards the north-west generally by the Rangitikei River to the Kawhatau Stream aforesaid.

And I do further notify that licenses to kill such imported game within the said district shaii be issued to any person on payment of the sum of twenty shillings each ; and the Chief Postmaster at Napier, and the Postmasters at Waipawa, Woodville, Dannevirke, Hastings, Waipukurau, Norsewood. FIRST SCHEDULE. All that area bounded towards the north generally by East Taupo and Whakatane Counties; towards the north-east generally by the Rotorua Acclimatization District, as defined by Warrant published in the New Zealand Gazette of 14th May, 1908, page 1382; towards the east generally by the sea; towards the south generally by the Akitio and Pahiatua Counties ; and towards the west and north-west generally by the Pohangina, Kiwitea, and Rangitikei Counties to the southern boundary of East Taupo County aforesaid. The said area comprises the Counties of Hawke’s Bay, Patangata, Woodville, Waipawa, Dannevirke, Waipukurau, and Weber, and part of the County of Wairoa. SECOND SCHEDULE, Areas wherein Imported and Native Game shall not BE KILLED. 1. The head of the Inner Harbour, near Petane. 2. Part of the Tukituki River extending from Waimarama Bridge to a line running from the north of the Mangangara Stream to the road at the south-western corner of Sections 9 and 15, Te Mata Survey District. 3. Another part of the Tukituki River (see Gazette No. 78, of the 20th July, 1916, page 2414). 4. Tutira Lake. 5. All lands notified or set apart as sanctuaries or reserves for the preservation of imported or native game. SCHEDULE Areas wherein Imported and Native Game shall not be killed. All that area in the Auckland Land District, situated in Kai Iwi and Kaihu Survey Districts, Hobson County, being
the lakes known as Lake Waikere, Lake Taharoa, and Lake Kai Iwi, and the area surrounding the said lakes included within a line running parallel to and forty chains distant from the margins of the said lakes: also the Lighthouse Reserve at Pouto Point (North Kaipara Head), containing 1,026 acres, more or less : also all that area in the Auckland Land District, formerly known as Pouto No. 2d, situated at the north head of Kaipara Harbour, in North Head and Okaka Survey Districts, and containing by admeasurement 3,330 acres, more or less, bounded towards the north by Subdivision 10a of Pouto No. 2b Block from the sea to the north-western boundary of the Crown land on which the lighthouse and signal-station are situated; thence towards the east by the above-mentioned Crown land to Kaipara Harbour ; thence towards the south by Kaipara Harbour, and towards the west by the sea to the place of commencement : also all that land in the Auckland Land District, being Subdivision No. 10a of Pouto No. 2b Block, situated in North Head and Okaka Survey Districts, to the north of the entrance to Kaipara Harbour, and containing by admeasurement 13,000 acres, more or less, bounded towards the northwest by Nos. 1 and 2 of the said Pouto No. 2b Block from the sea to the north-western corner of No. 10b of same block ; thence towards the north-east by the said No. 10b ; thence towards the south by a strip of Crown land adjoining Wahi Tapu Block, by the Crown land on which the lighthouse and signal-station are situated, and by the Crown land formerly known as Pouto No. 2d ; thence towards the west by the sea to the place of commencement: also certain area at Pouto Point, being the lakes known as Moheno Lake and Karaka Lake and the small lakes and lagoons adjacent to and in the vicinity of those lakes : also certain areas of water at Pouto Point, situated in the Okaka Survey District (see Gazette No. 42, of the Bth March, 1917, page 865) : also the game farm at Aratapu, and an area one mile in width surrounding the said farm : and also all lands notified or set apart as sanotuaries or reserves for the preservation of imported or native game.

Also Cheviot Lagoon. Also all the River Avon and its tributaries to the tramwaybridge at New Brighton. Also lagoons at Amberley—-namely, all that area, containing 74 acres, more or less, being Section No. 5664, Block XII, Grey Survey District, the said section being the property of Alfred Edward Tutton, of Amberley. IN exercise of the powers vested in me by the Animals Protection Act, 1908,1, Arthur William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby notify that the following imported game —viz., Californian quail and mallard duck (English wild duck) may be killed within the Otago Acclimatization District (except with respect to Californian quail in the areas mentioned m the First Schedule hereto), comprising the Counties of Vincent, Maniototo, Waihemo, Waikouaiti, Taieri, Peninsula, Tuapeka, Bruce, Clutha, and part of the County of Southland, being all that area in the Provincial District of Otago bounded on the east and south by the ocean from Shag Point to the mouth, of the Mataura River ; on the west, south-west, and south by the Mataura River and the Counties of Southland and Wallace; on the north-west by the ocean; and on the north, north-west, and north-east by the Counties of Westland and Waitaki (excepting therefrom the County of Lake and the areas mentioned in the Second Schedule hereto), from the first day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, to the thirty-first day of July, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, both days inclusive. And I do also notify that licenses to kill such imported game within the said district shall be issued to any person on payment of the sum of twenty shillings ; and the Chief Postmaster at Dunedin and the Postmasters at Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, and Roxburgh are hereby authorized to sign and issue the said licenses to kill imported game. 2—P.G.

And I do hereby restrict the number of native game that may be killed by any one person in any one day to not more than twenty-five head in all, exclusive of black swan; and provided that the number of pukeko that may be killed by any one person in any one day be limited to twelve. The number of black swan which may be killed is not limited.

A straight line commencing from the north-eastern corner of Macraes Township (Section 63, Block I, Highlay) to the mouth of the Shag River; thence by the ocean to the mouth of the Molyneux River; thence by straight line to the most southern portion of Darton Town; thence by the western boundary of the said town, then by straight line to the southern corner of the Town of Macraes ; thence by western boundary of the said town to the, northern boundary of Section 54, Block I, Highlay; thence per line to the northwestern boundary of aforesaid district to the commencingpoint.
SECOND SCHEDULE. 1. All that area in the Greenvale Survey District described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 81, of the sth October, 1899, page 1870. 2. IN exercise of the powers vested in me by the Animals Protection Act, 1908,1, Arthur William de Brito Savile, Earl of Liverpool, the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, do hereby notify that the following imported game—viz., cock pheasants, Californian and Australian quail—may be killed within the Whangarei Acclimatization District, comprising the County of Whangarei and part of the County of Otamatea (except; in the areas mentioned in the Schedule hereto), from the first day of Alay, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, to the thirty-first day of July, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, both days inclusive; and do hereby restrict the number of cock-pheasants that may be killed by any one person in any one day to twelve, and the number of Californian quail to twelve. And Ido further notify that licenses to kill such imported game within the said district shall be issued to any person on payment of the sum of twenty shillings each ; and the Postmasters at Aponga, Hikurangi, Kamo, Kiripaka, Limestone, Mangapai, Alangawai, Alaungakaramea, Parakao, Parua Bay, Poroti, Ruakaka, Titoki, Waikiekie, Waipu, Whakapara, and Whangarei are hereby appointed to sign and issue the said licenses to kill imported game. SCHEDULE. Areas wherein Imported and Native Game shall not be killed. All that area in the Auckland Land District, containing by admeasurement approximately twenty-eight square miles,
situated in Purua and Whangarei Survey Districts, and comprising all the land within the circumference of a circle having a radius of three miles, and its centre near the hatcheries at the intersection of the eastern boundary of Ketenikau No. 7, in Block VIII, Purua Survey District, with the north side of the road cutting off the extreme south-eastern corner of the said Ketenikau No. 7. The boundary as exactly indicated above passes approximately through the places locally known as follows : Starting at the north it crosses Kauri Road just south of Big Mountain Trig. Station; thence going westerly and southerly it crosses the Ruatangata Road at Ngararatunua Settlement; afterwards crossing Three-mile Bush Road near Campbell’s ; after passing through State Forest Reserves of 1,580 acres and 1,600 acres it strikes Maunu Road near Black Bridge ; crossing Otaika Road at Raumanga it passes to the south-east of the Borough of Whangaiei, and crosses Head’s Road at Reyburn’s house; after crossing Whareora Road near the caves and Kiripaka Road near the church the boundary passes through Cork’s Farm and back to starting-point; including the Borough of Whangarei and the Town District of Kamo. IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities vested in him by the Animals Protection Act, 1908, as amended by the Animals Protection Amendment Act, 1910, His Excellency the Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion, doth hereby suspend the operation of section ten of the said Animals Protection Amendment Act, 1910, for the period commencing on the first day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, and ending on the thirty-first day of July, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, with respect to the species of birds indigenous to New Zealand mentioned in the Schedule hereto; and, with the like advice and consent, doth declare that such suspension shall bo subject to the provisions contained in the Warrants in respect of the shooting season jn each acclimatization district.

THE attention of sportsmen, game-dealers, and others is called to the following provisions of the Animals Protection Act, 1908, and the Animals Protection Amendment Act, 1910. G. W. The Animals Protection Act, 1908. Section 36.—N0 person shall kill, destroy, or shoot at any game or native game with anything but a shoulder gun, and no such gun must exceed size No. 10 at muzzle. No gun shall exceed 10 lb. in weight. Any person offending against this provision is liable to a penalty not exceeding £2O. Section 31.—N0 imported game or native game to be exported without the written consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs. Season for taking or killing native and imported game (other than deer and godwits), Ist May to 31st July. Section 10. Foe for license to take or kill imported game (other than deer) to be £l. Section 30.—N0 imported or native game, whether chilled or otherwise, to be held in possession for a greater period than seven days after close of season.
