Auckland. 9th instant, for escaping from military custody, James William Murdoch Ross, age twentyseven, height 5 ft. 6 in., labourer, native of Australia, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, large brown eyes; dressed in a brown suit. Offender was arrested as a deserter, and escaped from military escort era route to Detention Camp, Devonport. (See Police Gazette, 1916, page 620.)

Tupakoa. —llth December last, on warrant for assaulting Pinoha Korau and robbing him of a cheque (No. 1157, for £3 10s., drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, Tokomaru Bay), a cheque for £2 13s. 6d., and two £1 notes (one cheque only identifiable), Sam Johnston, age about twenty-three, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer and horse-shoer, native of New Zealand, strong build, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes, clean-shaved; usually dressed in riding - breeches and leggings, blue coat and vest, and Panama hat with coloured band ; good appearance ; a halfcaste Maori. Complainant, who was under the influence of drink on the road between Tuparoa and Mangahanae, met accused, who assaulted and robbed him. Accused was authorized to see the calves sold at Te Awamutu auction saleyards for complainant, but sold them privately on his own account for £3 10s. each.

Gisborne. —6th instant, on warrant for forgery, Roy James Lambess, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. sin., exjockey, native of New Zealand, medium build, sallow com plexion, curly fair hair, blue eyes ; usually dressed in a light-brown or grey check suit, white-silk collar, and brownfelt hat; right leg has been broken, turns right foot inwards when walking. He may be accompanied by George Garnet, alias Gardiner, alias Garner, referred to in Police Gazette, 1914, page 47, and Photographs 14, and John O’Neil], referred to in Persons Wanted, this issue. Accused induced Arthur Frederick Neale to forge the name of A. Adams, horse-trainer, with the intent to obtain £lO, money deposited at Gisborne Police-station as bail. He is identical with offender referred to in preceding paragraph.

Gisborne. —7th instant, on warrant of commitment to Gisborne Prison for two months in default of paying £5 10s. balance of fine and costs for assault, John O’Neill, age thirty-two, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, scar on bridge of nose ; dressed in a blue-serge suit and dark woollyfur felt hat ; impediment in speech. He may assume the name James, and may be in company with Roy James Lambess, referred to in preceding paragraphs.

Wanganui. —loth instant, for escaping from Wanganui Police-prison, John Clark, age twenty - seven, height sft. 7Jin., labourer and soldier, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes, right forefinger stiff, scar on right knee, large mouth, thick lips; dressed in khaki riding-breeohes and putties, tunic with sergeant’s stripes on it, cap, and black boots; fond of drink. Accused was awaiting sentence at the Supreme Court for theft at Taihape when he esoaped from the prisonyard. (See Police Gazette, 1917, page 52.)

Palmerston North. —loth instant, for assaulting Norman Herbert Stanley Sinclair, 130 Church Street East, and robbing him of a bunch of keys and 6d. in money (not identifiable) Two Men (names unknown). Description : First, about sft. 11 in., strong build (weight about 12 stone); dressed in a fawn Dexter waterproof coat, brown soft-felt hat, and strong black boots; second, about sft. 4in., slight build (weight about 9 stone); dressed in a grey-tweed overcoat and grey cap. Accused, who were wearing black masks and armed with revolvers and an electric torch, met complainant at his gateway ; they marched him to a lonely spot off Scandia Street, where they robbed him, and fired a revolver shot at him as he ran away.

Palmerston North —sth instant, on military warrant for disobeying lawful commands (failing to report at camp), William Francis Carroll, age thirty two, height 5 ft. in., farmer, native of New Zealand, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes; weight about 1981 b.; portion of right little finger missing. If arrested he is to be handed over to the military authorities.

Palmerston North. —sth instant, on military warrant, for disobeying lawful commands (failing to report at camp), Francis Joseph Carroll, age twentyseven, height sft. Bfin., farmer, native of New Zealand, fair complexion, brown hair, light-brown eyes; weight about 180 lb. If arrested, to be handed over to the military authorities.

Wellington. —lßth Deoember last, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for seven days in default of paying £2 16s. fine and costs for a breach of the City Bylaws, Lionel Scoullar, age twenty, height 5 ft. 8 in., taxidriver, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, scar on left side of forehead. Accused forged the name of Thomas Henkson Mee, sheepfarmer, Beck’s, to a cheque for £IBO, drawn in favour of J. Marshall, and uttered to Cecil Stanley Beeohey, teller of the Bank of New South Wales, Naseby, who cashed it.
