PERSONS WANTED.

Avondale.— 24th July last, on warrant for false pretences, T. H. Cliff, hawier, age forty to forty-five, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, dark hair turning grey, blue eyes. Accused while hawking inferior goods at Swanson induced one George Peterson to purchase two suit-lengths from him for £2 10s. by falsely representing that he was travelling for G. W. Ross and Co., and that this firm would make up the suits for £1 each. It has since been ascertained that no such firm exists.

Auckland. — Bert Kemp, failing to provide : It has been ascertained by the Auckland police that the accused is now in Sydney. (See Police Gazette., 1914, page 587.)

Auckland. make adequate provision for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, George Wadland, butcher, native of England, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 8 in,, strong build, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes. Complainant, Grace Richardson, Grey Lynn.

Auckland. —lßth March last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for three days in default of paying £1 3s. 6d. costs for a breach of the Auckland Harbour Board By-laws, Richard Hay, seaman and wireless-operator, native of New Zealand, age twenty-one, height sft. 6in., medium build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes, prominent nose.

Auckland.— lßth August last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for fourteen days for having failed to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his child, William Gurnick, fisherman, native of Germany, age thirty-five, height 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, blue eyes, bow-legged ; swaggering gait. Arrears to 7th July last, £5. (See Police Gazette, 1914, page 559.)

Auckland. —26th ultimo, that he may be arrested and returned to the prison from which he was released upon probationary license under the Crimes Amendment Act, 1910, Robert Charles Stevenson, alias Kingham, alias L>ouisson, labourer, native of Australia, age thirty-nine, height sft. 9Jin., medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, soar on forehead. (See Police Gazette, 1914, page 453.) He is an habitual criminal, whose probationary license has been cancelled by Governor’s Warrant. (Justice R.P. 14/36 ; G.R. 14/502.)

Hamilton. —10th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for forty-eight hours in default of paying 10s. costs for a breach of his prohibition order, James Wilson, labourer, native of New Zealand, age forty-eight, height 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, bracelet and clasped hands in wreath on right forearm.

Hamilton. —29th ultimo, on two warrants of commitment to Auckland Prison for (1) seven days in default of paying £1 10s. fine and costs for a breach of his prohibition order, (2) fourteen days in default of paying £2 10s. fine and costs for a breach of his prohibition order, John Peter Morgan, fireman and labourer, native of Ireland, age forty-two, height sft. 6in., medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair turning grey, blue eyes, broken nose; scar on left eyebrow and hand, and two on left arm. Hamilton. —16th ultimo, for failing to comply wtih the terms of his release upon probation under First Offenders’ Probation Act, Matthew Michael Lane, dealer and driver, native of Wales, age thirty-six, height 5 ft. 6Jin., medium build, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey, blue eyes, clean-shaved ; fond of drink ; usually dressed in a dark suit, rough dark-grey overcoat, and soft hat. He may endeavour to join the Expeditionary Force. His arrest is desired.

Hamilton.— lßth ultimo, that a distress warrant for £lO 11s. 6d. costs for attempted suicide may be executed upon his effects, John Kerr, labourer, native of England, age thirty-six, height 5 ft. 7 in., medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, clean-shaved ; tip of left forefinger missing; quiet manner. He may be identical with offender of the same name referred to in Police Gazette, 1914, page 527.

Whakatane. —About 30th April last, on warrant for false pretences, Ru Vallance, bridge-carpenter, age about thirty-six, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, fair complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved; usually dressed in alightsuitandgreycap; walks with a stoop. Accused obtained a buggy from Alfred Thorne for £4, on the representation that he had ability to pay for it, and would pay for it on the following day, but failed to do so. He may be accompanied by his wife (height 5 ft. 11 in., dark complexion, dark hair, bad front teeth) and three children, aged respectively eleven years, eight years, and one year.

Gisborne. —25th ultimo, on warrant for failing without reasonable cause to provide adequate maintenance for his wife, George Henry Woskett, engine-driver and fireman, native of New Zealand, age forty, height 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, dark complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes, sandy moustache; two flags on left arm; heart, “G.W.,” and “A” on right arm. Complainant, Lora Josephine Woskett, Norman Road.

Gisborne. —24th August last, on warrant for failing without reasonable cause to provide his wife and child with adequate maintenance, Arthur James O’Leary, butcher, native of New Zealand, age twenty-three, height 5 ft. 9 in., Blight build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes, thin features; slightly bow-legged. Complainant, Jean O’Leary, 322 Aberdeen Road.

Ohakune.— Arthur Potter, theft: Accused is identical with Arthur Potter, referred to in Police Gazette, 1914, page 384. (See Police Gazette, 1914, page 588.)

Hastings. —llth ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Napier Prison for seven days in default of paying £2 10s. fine and costs for a breach of his prohibition order, Michael Purcell, labourer, native of Ireland, age fifty-one, height 5 ft. lOJin., medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair turning grey, grey eyes ; usually dressed in a dark suit and soft-felt hat; addicted to drink. Hastings.— l2th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Napier Prison for one month in default of paying £5 ss. for a breach of his prohibition order, Michael Purcell, labourer, native of Ireland, age fifty-one, height 5 ft. 10^in., medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair turning grey, grey eyes ; usually dressed in a dark suit and soft-felt hat; addicted to drink. Waipawa. —24th ultimo, on warrant for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his brother, an inmate of The Boys’ Training Farm, Nelson,

Edward Doyle, labourer, native of New Zealand, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 11 in., strong build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, blue-grey eyes, clean-shaved; sullen appearance; walks with a slight stoop. Arrears to 14th instant, £9 10s. (See Police Gazette, 1912, page 412.)

Dannevirke.— l4th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Napier Prison for one month in default of paying £5 18s. fine and costs for theft, George Amos Curran, blacksmith, native of New Zealand, age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 6 in., strong build, fair complexion, broad face, fair frizzy hair, blue-grey eyes ; a pugilist; usually dressed in a brown suit and hard black hat.

Wellington.—24th August last, on warrant of commitment to Wellington Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £1 10s. fine and costs for a breach of his prohibition order, John Hyde, labourer, native of England, age fiftyone, height 5 ft. in., medium build, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, scar on right cheek. Wellington.—Both ultimo, on warrant for deserting the s.s. “ Orari,” Walter Burrows, trimmer, native of England, age twenty-one, height 5 ft. medium build, fresh complexion, black hair, brown eyes ; anchor, heart, diamond, and flag on left forearm. (See Police Gazette, 1914, page 580.)

Wellington. —23rd ultimo, that his whereabouts may be ascertained, Franklin Gilbert Ryland, gunner, native of New Zealand, age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 10in., medium build, dark complexion, brown hair and eves; good-looking. He was a member of the Expeditionary Force, but failed to embark on the 23rd instant. If located, an urgent telegraphic communication is to be sent to the Superintendent of Police, Wellington.

Wellington. —3oth ultimo, on warrant for deserting the s.s. “ Orari,” Joseph Parry, fireman, native of England, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 3 in,, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, brown eyes. (See Police Gazette, 1914, pages 580.)

Wellington.— 22nd ultimo, for theft of an imitation morocco-leather pocketbook, containing visiting-cards with “ G. H. Tarr ” on them, and a cheque for £8 4s. 9d., the property of George Herman Tarr (cheque recovered), William Francis Wilkinson, age fifty-nine, height 5 ft. 11 in,, medium build, dark complexion, grey hair, blue eyes, grey beard and moustache, nose inclined to right, scar on right cheek; usually wears a dark-grey suit, striped overcoat, and soft-felt hat. He belongs to the vagrant class, and sells boot-laces on the streets. If located, a telegraphic communication is to be sent to the Superintendent of Police, Wellington. No warrant. Wellington. —3lst March last, that he mav be induced to maintain bis children, William Smith King, ex hotel and stable keeper, native of England, age forty-five, height 6 ft., strong build, brown curly hair (going bald), fair moustache ; usually dressed in a dark suit and hard hat; walks with a slight stoop ; fond of drink. He was last heard of in March last at Bluff, from where he communicated with his wife, saying he was ill. Complainant, Margaret King, Overton Terrace.

Wellington.— 26th ultimo, on warrant for failing without reasonable cause to provide his wife and four children with adequate maintenance, George Horace Marshall, wharf labourer, native of New Zealand, age thirty-seven, height 5 ft. 7 in., thin build, dark complexion, dark ourly hair, dark-brown eyes ; usually dressed in a light-grey tweed suit, dark overcoat, and hard black hat. Complainant, Violet Marshall, Franklin Avenue.

Wellington. —24th ultimo, on warrant for deserting the s.s. “Eurasia,” Versari Francisco, A. 8., native of Italy, age twenty-four, height sft 5 in., medium build, dark complexion and hair, dark-brown eyes, small dark moustache ; cannot speak English.

Denniston. —20th April last, that a summons may be served upon him for a breach of the Defence Act, Otto Bettjemann, labourer, native of New Zealand, age twenty, height 5 ft. 10 in., good build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes. He was last heard of at Taumarunui,

Westport.—lßth ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Greymouth Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £2 10s. fine and costs for using obscene language, Dennis Laird, labourer, native of New Zealand, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. sin., stout build, round face, fair complexion and hair, clean-shaved, bad front teeth ; slight impediment in speech ; very talkative when under the influence of drink.

Reefton. —10th August last, that he may be induced to contribute towards the maintenance of his brother, an inmate of the Boys’ Training Farm, Nelson, James Boyle, miner, native of New Zealand, age twenty-three, height 5 ft. 6in., light-brown hair, clean-shaved, slight scar on right eyebrow; usually dressed in a light-tweed suit. Inquiry is at the instance of the Education Department.

Hokitika. —l4th July last, on warrant of commitment to Greymouth Prison for forty-eight hours in default of paying £1 6s. fine and costs for being found on licensed premises during prohibited hours, Henry Kempthorne, driver, native of Australia, age twenty-five, height about 5 ft, 6 in., medium active build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, blue or grey eyes ; usually dressed in a light tweed suit and soft black-felt hat. (See following paragraph.)

Hokitika. —21st July last, that a distress warrant for £1 13s. fine and costs for being found on licensed premises during prohibited hours may be executed upon his effects, Henry Kempthorne, driver, native of Australia, age twenty-five, height about 5 ft. 6 in., medium active build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, blue or grsyeyes ; usually dressed in light-tweed suit and soft black-felt hat. Christchurch. —lsth July last, on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Prison for one month in default of paying £3 2s. fine and costs for a breach of the City By-laws, George Johnston, motor driver, native of New Zealand, age about thirty, height sft. 7in., strong build, sallow complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes.

Christchurch. —24th ultimo, on warrant for failing without reasonable cause to make adequate provision for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child, Frank Everett, motor-driver, native of New Zealand, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. lOJin., medium build, dark complexion and hair, hazel eyes. He has a gold-filled upper tooth which he shows when laughing. He may endeavour to get away with the Expeditionary Force. Complainant, Helen Smyth, Kaiapoi.

Christchurch. —7th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Prison for forty-eight hours in default of paying 13s. fine and costs for drunkenness, James McGrath, labourer, native of England, age thirty, height about 5 ft. 10 in., medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, forefinger of each hand missing. Port Chalmers. —26th ultimo, on warrant for deserting the s.s. “ Aperima,” Max Hammond, apprentice, native of Tasmania, age sixteen, height 4 ft. 6 in., slight build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes; one upper tooth missing, ship on one arm; slouching gait; usually dressed in a blue suit with double-breasted coat, grey overcoat, and cap.

Port Chalmers. —26th ultimo, on warrant for deserting the s.s. “ Aperima,” William Augustus Neale, apprentice, native of New Zealand, age seventeen, height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, fair complexion and hair, rolling gait; “ Amolcura ” on one arm; usually dressed in a blue suit with double-breasted coat and cap.

Dunedin.— 27th August last, on warrant for theft of a gentleman’s bicycle, value £7 10s., the property of Francis John Temper (recovered), George Richardson, stable-boy, native of New Zealand, age seventeen, height 4 ft. 9in., slim build, sallow complexion, dark hair, brown eyes ; usually dressed in a tweed kniokerbocker suit; smart appearance. Dunedin. —12oh August last, on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Prison for three weeks in default of paying £3 13s. 4d. balance of fine and costs for threatening behaviour, David McDonald, labourer, native of New Zealand, age about twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 9 in., strong build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair ; usually dressed in a darktweed suit and soft “ Velour ” hat.

Dunedin. —24th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Prison for one month for having failed to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his two children, John Otto Rankin, a labourer, native of New Zealand, age thirty-nine, height 5 ft. 8f in., medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes, scar on each cheek, anchor on right forearm.
