PERSONS WANTED.

Auckland.—sth instant, on warrant for forgery and uttering, E. Williams (name probably fictitious), age between twenty-five and thirty, height about 5 ft. 6 in., supposed farm labourer, rather well built, round face, fresh complexion, blue eyes, clean-shaved; wearing a soft fawncoloured felt hat. Offender purchased a cheque-book containing twenty-four cheques from the National Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, numbers from A 836281 to A 836304, and filled one in for £6 55., signed “ George Ansell,” payable to E. Williams. He uttered the cheque to William Donald McLeod, bootmaker, Auckland, in payment for a, pair of black lace-up boots, size 6, value 19s. 6d., and received the balance, indorsing the cheque “E. Williams.” The cheque was returned from the bank marked “No account.” Another cheque out of the book was presented at Raetihi on the 6th instant. Offender said he had been working for George Ansell, Papakura Valley,

Auckland.—Bth December last, for forging and uttering a cheque for £2 15s. on the National Bank of New Zealand, Auckland, to Jacob Barripp, fancy-goods dealer, Auckland, Man, name unknown, supposed identical with Alexander Smith, age about fifty, height sft. 4in., cook, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair (thin in front), brown moustache turning grey, large wrinkles in face ; dressed in brownish suit and soft-f6lt hat. He was formerly employed by Mr. Niccol, boat-builder, and the cheque was signed “ G. T. Niccol,” in favour of T. Hunt. The writing on the cheque and the indorsement resembles the writing of the suspect. No warrant.

Auckland.—l7th November last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for seven days in default of paying £2 3s. fine and costs for breach of a prohibition order, William Stirling, age fifty-three, height 5 ft. 3 in., labourer, native of Scotland, medium build, fresh complexion, grey hair, blue eyes, brown hair turning grey ; usually wears a dark-tweed suit and soft-felt hat.

Auckland.—27th November last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for twenty-four hours in default of paying 4s. for wilful damage, William Stirling, age fiftythree, height 5 ft. 3 in., labourer, native of Scotland, medium build, fresh complexion, grey hair, blue eyes, brown hair turning grey; usually wears a dark-tweed suit and soft-felt hat. Auckland. —30th November last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for twenty-four hours in default of paying Bs. fine and costs for drunkenness, Owen McEvoy, age thirty-two, height 5 ft. 9£in., fireman, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair turning grey, bracelet tattooed on left wrist.

Auckland. —2nd December last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for seven days in default of paying £2 10s. fine and costs for breach of prohibition order, John James Smith, age twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 6| in., labourer, native of New Zealand, stout build, dark hair, dark pimply complexion, clean-shaved, grey eyes ; dirty appearance ; is generally found hanging about the wharves and hotels.

Hikuai.— 3rd instant, that he may be compelled to contribute towards the support of his child, an inmate of the industrial school, Auckland, William Jackson, age about fifty-eight, height about 5 ft. 7 in., gum-digger, native of England, dark complexion, full scraggy beard turning grey, dark hair turning grey, lifts one foot higher than the other when walking, medium build; generally wears dark clothes; somewhat eccentric; fond of drink. He was last seen at Otamakitai on the 7th October, 1911.

Hamilton. —23rd ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for one month in default of paying £2 3s. for drunkenness and medical treatment, Thomas Cunningham, age thirty-three, height 5 ft. sJin., labourer, native of Scotland, slight build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes, black moustache ; dressed in dark-brown sac suit, hard black hat, and heavy boots.

Gisborne. —7th instant, that he may be compelled to contribute towards the support of his two children, inmates of the Auckland Industrial School, Harry Yeale, age forty, height 5 ft, 5 in., butcher and shearer, native of New Zealand, fresh complexion, brown hair, dark-ginger beard. Inquiry by the Education Department.

Napier. Napier Prison for forty-eight hours in default of paying £1 ss. for drunkenness. Crasen Dennisen, age fifty-two, height 5 ft. 3 in., labourer, native of Denmark, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, light-blue eyes, scar on left elbow. (See Police Gazette , 1912, page 71.) He was also convicted of indecency, and ordered to come up for sentence when called on.

Napier. —23rd ultimo, on warrant for theft of £4 from George Gunn, drover, Albert William Foote, age twenty-five, height 5 ft. 11 in., labourer, native of New Zealand ; smart appearance; generally wears a brown suit, grey cap, and lace-up tan boots. He was employed by complainant, and sold a horse for him for the above amount and has not been seen since. (See Police Gazette, 1910, page 129, and Photographs of Prisoners discharged, 1910, page 20.) He is supposed to have gone to Gisborne on 26th ultimo.

Wanganui. —On or about 23rd November last, on warrant for forging an order for the payment of £9, John Sweeney, alias George McLeod, alias John Hartnett, age thirty-three, height 5 ft. 9Jin., bushman, native of Tasmania, dark complexion, black hair, large nose. When last seen had large moustache only. (See Police Gazette, 1910, page 480, and Photographs of Discharged Prisoners, 1910, page 59.) Offender was working on a bush contract for Cole Bros., and received an order for £lO, which he cashed. Some days after he cashed another order for £9, and signed “ Leslie Cole,” which has been declared a forgery. (See Police Gazette, 1932, page 77.)

Palmerston North. —10th instant, that he may be compelled to pay arrears due for the maintenance of his children, inmates of the receiving home, Wellington, Henry Hargreaves, age forty-six, height 5 ft. 4Jin., labourer and sawmill hand, native of Australia, medium build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, small fair moustache only, little finger of right hand missing ; usually wears grey suit. Palmerston North. —7th intant, on warrant of commitment to Palmerston North Police-gaol for three weeks in default of paying £6 18s. fine and costs for a breach of the Legislature Act, William Smart (known as Scotty), age thirty, height 5 ft. 3 in., shearer’s cook, native of Scotland, speaks with a Scotch accent, medium build, fresh complexion ; dressed in dark-tweed suit and cap.

Wellington. the Royal New Zealand Artillery, Christopher John Farrell, gunner, age twenty - three, height 5 ft. 9|in., native of Dalkey, County Dublin, Ireland, was recently living at No. 105 Hanson Street, Wanganui, grey eyes, mouse-coloured hair, small dark moustaohe, anchor tattooed on right arm, spots tattooed on left arm, slight impediment in speech when abruptly addressed. If located, notice to be forwarded to the Commissioner’s Office, Wellington. (P. 12/244.)

Wellington.— 2nd December, 1911, on warrant for unlawfully detaining a postal packet, the property of the Postmaster-General, Thomas McMillan, age about forty, height sft. 7Jin., coppersmith, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair turning grey, fair moustache, blue eyes, sharp nose ; dressed in grey sac suit and white straw hat with black band. Accused asked for and obtained letters from the New Plymouth Postoffice addressed to McMillan, Buckley Terrace. Stafford. mitment to Wellington Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £1 3s. fine and costs for being found on licensed premises during prohibited hours, William Howell, age about twenty-nine, height about 5 ft. 2 in., bushman and ex-jockey, native of Tasmania, dark complexion, brown hair and eyes, woman tattooed on each arm. Supposed to have come to Wellington, and gave his address as “ Care of Mrs. Harris, Te Aro Post-office.” He may be employed on a boat trading between Wellington and Australia.

Christchurch.— -sth ultimo, on warrant for failing to provide his wife, Clara McLachlan, with adequate means of support, Colin Campbell McLachlan, age thirtysix, height sft. 7 in., butcher’s assistant, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, hair turning grey, clean-shaved, left eye has been injured and shows signs of a cataract growing; dressed in dark-green suit and hat of same colour. He was a member of the Caledonian Pipe Band, Christchurch. He is supposed to have come to the North Island.

Dunedin. —sth instant, on warrants for deserting the German barque “ Antuco,” Walter Michaelis, Franz Stelter, Fritz Schumaker. Descriptions: First, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 6 in., A. 8., native of Germany, stout build, dark hair, clean-shaved, blue eyes ; probably dressed in dark clothes; speaks broken English. Second, age twentyfour, height sft. 8 in., A. 8., native of Germany, stout build, dark hair, dark moustache only, blue eyes; dressed in blueserge suit with double-breasted coat ; cannot speak English. Third, age nineteen, height sft. 7 in., seaman, native of Germany, stout build, fair hair with white patch on side of head, clean-shaved, blue eyes ; blue coat and trousers and white vest; speaks English. A reward of £6 will be paid for the apprehension of each.
