Napier. —7th instant, on warrant for obtaining £5 from John Hardy, licensee Petane Ho el, by means of a valueless cheque, Thomas Johnson (name probably fictitious), age about fifty-five, height 5 ft. 8 in., supposed carpenter, s im build, dark complexion, full dark beard tinged with grey; dressed in dark c at and vest, light-coloured trousers, dark soft-felt hat with high crown, soft shirt and tie. Offender obtained a blank cheque from complainant, and filled it in for above amount on the Bank of New Zealand, Wanganui. He represented that he was a carpenter, and had been working between Te Kuiti and Taumarunui.

Stratford. —11th ultimo, on warrant for forgery and uttering, John Smith (alias John Withers), age twentyeight, height sft. 9in., naiive/of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion and'ha#, blue eyes, straight nose, farm labourer, and soman im/s works in boardinghouses, walks erect; dressed in d&rk-rweed suit a d cap. Offender was employed for a few days by George Gale Larcom, farmer, and stole a blank cheque, filled it in for £3, forged complainant’s name, and cashed it at the Clarendon Hobbi.
