Inglewood.—-23rd instant, that he may be compelled to support his wife and family, George Meares Payne, age thirty-five, height 5 ft. 10 in., labourer and seamen, native of England, very dark complexion, dark moustache only, smart appearance, well educated. He was a member of the First New Zealand Contingent. He was at Hawera in January last, where he was employed as a road-foreman. He has a brother a school-teacher at Wanganui. Inquiry by the Charitable Aid Board.

Wanganui.—2oth instant, on warrant for escaping from lawful custody, William/Treves, alias William Henry Trevis, age forty-six, height sft. 4Jin., labourer, native of England, medium buils faiir complexion, light-brown hair turning grey, moustache on|y, anchor tattooed on right forearm, “ True Love ” onf left/forearm, sailor on left hand, ring tattooed on left ring-fingej/; dressed in grey suit and soft shirt. Palmebston Noeth.—sth ultimo, on warrant for theft of a bicycle, value £l2 (recovered), the property of John McLauchlan, Palmerston North, Carson, age twentyfive, height 5 ft. 8 in. or 9 in., slim build, sharp features, dark complexion and hair, clean-shaved, slightly stooped, American accent; dressed in grey-tweed coat and cap, fawncoloured corduroy vest with brown trimming around edges ; untidy appearance. The bicycle was recovered by ActrngDetective Cameron from a boardinghouse at Thorndon Quay, Wellington, where it had been left by offender, who gave the above name. He also left a shirt marked “L. Storey ”in the room he occupied there.

Palmebston Nobth. —13th instant, on warrant for false pretences, James McLean, age sixty-one, height 5 ft. 6 in., cook, native of Scotland, fresh complexion, grey hair, large blue eyes, stout builds about 16 stone weight, brownmoustaohe tjuraing plausible manner; fond of a soft shirt, and grey cap. Offender obtained £1 lffs. from Raymond John Wells, labourer, by falsely representing that he was one of the MoLean Brothers, contractors, and that he would give him employment.
