MISSING.

Napier. —Since about the 6th December, 1908, Harriet Sutherland, age about twenty, height 5 ft. 4 in. or 5 in., a half-caste Maori, well built, full round face, more European appearance, and fairer, than most half-castes. Last year when on a visit to her relatives, the Tautahangas, at Frasertown, their daughter Mary become jealous of her on account of her good looks and her preference by a young half-caste, and had at least one severe quarrel and fight. On the 6th December, when she was last seen, she was very ill, and had Bevere burn-marks on her face, arms, and body, and appeared ill used. Mary Tautahanga and her mother made many contradictory statements, “ That she had gone on the 11th December to Kaikoura, Christchurch ; that on same date Henry Manaina and she had gone away on horseback towards Mohaka; that they were living at Te Kuiti; at)d that Mary had received a letter from Harriet there, saying she was married to Henry Manaina.” Mary Tautahanga describes Mar.aina as a young man, very flashly dressed, curly hair, dressed in knickers, tan boots, and hard black hat or cap, and wore a silver watch and ohain, and that he was often at Frasertown and Wairoa. No trace of him can be found as ever having been there, and every effort has failed to trace a man of that name or description at Te Kuiti or Hawke’s Bay (where the Manainas live), or the Wairarapa. As the circumstances strongly point to foul play, every search should be made for the girl and Henry Manaina. Should any trace of either of them be obtained, information to be at once sent to the Inspector of Polioe, Napier.

Greymouth.— Since 22nd ultimo, Duncan Steel, age about seventy, height 5 ft. 9 in., miner, native of Scotland, medium build, grey hair beard and moustache, an old-age pensioner. He was last seen at Flaherty’s Boardinghouse, on the 22nd ultimo. Inquiry by Mr. M. Phillips, secretary, Grey Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Fears are entertained for his safety.

Westport. —Since 10th September last, James Carr, age thirty-two, height 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in., fireman on s.s. “ Waipori,” stout build, fair complexion, fair hair and moustache; dressed in dark clothes. He was seen near the wharf on the above date, and may have fallen into the harbour or deserted his ship. Inquiry by the agent for the Union Company, Westport.
