EXTRACTS FROM NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE.

(From Gazette, 1907, pages 1045, 1046, 1047, 1048, 1049, and 1050.) Notice respecting Native and Imported Game. Colonial Secretary’s Office, Wellington, 27th March, 1907. THE attention of sportsmen, game-dealers, and others is called to the provisions of “ The Animals Protection

Act Amendment Act, 1889,” “ The Animals Protection Act Amendment Act, 1895,” “ The Animals Protection Acts Amendment Act, 1900,” and “ The Animals Protection Amendment Act, 1903,” which are now in force. A digest of the chief of such provisions is subjoined, viz. : “The Animals Protection Act Amendment Act, 1889.” Section 4. No person shall kill, destroy, or shoot at any game or native game with anything but a shoulder-gun, and no such gun must exceed size No. 10 at muzzle, or be fitted with barrels exceeding 36 in. in length. No gun shall exceed 101 b. in weight. Any person offending against this provision is liable to a penalty not exceeding £lO. Section 5. No person shall sell any native game, or take or kill any native game for the purpose of sale, without previously taking out the required license. Penalty not exceeding £2O. Section 6. No sale of native game shall take place except during the period within which such native game may be taken or killed. If any person hold a license to sell game— i.e., imported game—he is not liable to pay a second fee on taking out a license to sell native game. But both licenses must be taken out if it is intended to sell both kinds of game.

“ The Animals Protection Act Amendment Act, 1895.” Section 6. Section 12 of “ The Animals Protection Act, 1880, ” is repealed. No person can noiv sell game, or dispose thereof for any gain or reward, unless he he the holder of a license to sell such game. Penalty not exceeding £2O. “ The Animals Protection Acts Amendment Act, 1900.” Section 3. No game or native game to be exported without the written consent of the Colonial Secretary, nor held in possession for a greater period than seven days after close of season, whether such game or native game be frozen, chilled, or not. Section 4. Native pigeon, pukeko, and kaka not to be taken or killed this year. “ The Animals Protection Amendment Act, 1903.” Section 2. Season for taking or killing native and imported game (other than deer and godwits), Ist May to 31st July. Section 5. Fee for license to take or kill game (other than deer) to be £l. JOHN G. XN exercise of the powers vested in me by 1 ‘ The Animals Protection Act, 1880,” and its amendments, T, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby appoint the Chief Postmasters at Auckland and Thames, and the Postmasters at Cambridge, Hamilton, Mercer, Papakura, Pukekohe, Whitianga, and Coromandel, to sign and issue licenses to take or kill imported game—namely, cock pheasants, and Californian and Australian quail—within the Auckland District, consisting of the Counties of Rodney, Waitemata, Manukau, Coromandel, Thames, Ohinemuri, Raglan, Waikato, Waipa, Kawhia, Awakino, Waitomo, and parts of the Counties of Piako and West Taupo (excepting the areas described in the Schedule hereto), to any person on the payment of the sum of one pound.

SCHEDULE. 1. All that area in the County of Waitemata bounded on the north by the Wairau Creek from its mouth to the main road from Devonport to Waiwera ; on the west by the said road to its junction with the Sea View Road ; on the south by that road to the sea; and on the east by the sea to the point of departure. 2. All those areas at Waitakerei, Nihotapu, and Huia, in the County of Waitemata, vested in or under the control of the Auckland City Council for the purposes of waterworks, recreation, or the conservation of the native flora and fauna. 3. Little Barrier Island, Hauturu, Auckland (see Neiv Zealand Gazette No. 104, of the 14th December, 1899, page 2266). 4. Hen and Chickens Islands. 5. The whole of the area comprised in the County of Eden.

IN exercise of the powers vested in me by “The Animals Protection Act, 1880,” and its amendments, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby appoint the Chief Postmaster at Christchurch to sign and issue licenses to take or kill imported game—namely, Californian quail—within the North Canterbury District, consisting of the Counties of Cheviot, Ashley, Akaroa, Selwyn, and Mount Herbert (excepting the areas described in the Schedule hereto), to any person on the payment of the sum of one pound; and also to sign and issue to any person licenses to sell native game on and after the first day of June next within the said district on payment of the sum of five pounds.

SCHEDULE. All that area in the County of Akaroa situated in the Akaroa and Ellesmere Survey Districts, Canterbury Land District, containing by admeasurement 1,540 acres, more or less, being the lake known as Lake Forsyth, including all roads fronting on the shores of the said lake. Also all those reserves in the said county and survey districts numbered 3186, 3187, 3185, 2903, 250, 810, 890, and 157. Also that area situated at Woodend, in the Mandeville and Rangiora Road District, and defined in notification published in Gazette No. 93, of Bth November, 1900. Also that area known as Yarr’s Lagoon, near Greenpark, and defined in Gazette No. 52, of 23rd June, 1904. Also all that area within one mile on each side of the West Coast (Christchurch-Hokitika) road from Springfield to Dillmanstown.

SCHEDULE. Areas within which Game and Native Game may not be TAKEN OR KILLED. 1. All that area in the Greenvale Survey District described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 81, of the sth October, 1899, page 1870. 2. The Lagoon Reserve in the Borough of Hawksbury (see New Zealand Gazette No. 4, of the 10th January, 1901, page 70). 3. All that area between Milford Sound and Lake Te Anau (see New Zealand Gazette No. 10, of the 6th February, 1902, page 240).

Tourist and Health Resorts Department, or any one authorised in writing by the said General Manager in that behalf, to sign and issue licenses to take or kill imported game—namely, cock pheasants, and Californian and Australian quail —within the Rotorua District, as defined in the New Zealand Gazette No. 6, of the twenty-fourth day of January, one thousand nine hundred and seven, consisting of the Counties of Rotorua and East Taupo, and parts of the Counties of West Taupo and Piako (excepting the area described in the Schedule hereto), to any person on the payment of the sum of one pound.

SCHEDULE. Areas within which Game and Native Game may not BE TAKEN OR KILLED. 1. Resolution Island, off Dusky Sound. 2. Seotion 27, Block IV, Invercargill Hundred, 3. Sections 41 and 42, Block VII, Jacob’s River Hundred. 4. Sections 3,4, and 5, Block XIV, New River Hundred (of which Mr. Philip A. Vyner is the owner). 5. The following blocks of land on the west side of the Oreti River, situated south of Oporo—namely, Sections, 6,7, 8,9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, Block XVI, New River Hundred. 6. All that area in the Paterson Survey District, Stewart Island, containing about 120 acres, being a strip of land 10 chains in width, 5 chains on each side of Duck Creek, Paterson’s Inlet, extending from the mouth of the stream to the western boundary of Paterson Survey District, a distance of about a mile and a half.

Protection Act, 1880,” and its amendments, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby appoint the Postmasters at Wairoa, Mohaka, and Frasertown to sign and issue licenses to take or kill imported game—namely, cock pheasants and Californian quail—within the Wairoa Acclimatisation District, described in the Schedule hereto (excepting therefrom the Nuhaka Thermal - springs Reserve and the area described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 54, of the second day of July, one thousand nine hundred and three, page one thousand five hundred and thirty), to any person on the payment of the sum of one pound; and also to sign and issue to any person licenses to sell imported game within the said district on payment of the sum of five pounds.

SCHEDULE. All that area in the Hawke’s Bay and Auokland Land Districts bounded towards the north generally by the Whakatane County from the north-eastern boundary of Heruiwi No. 4 Block to the watershed between the Te Waiotukapiti and Mangainuiohou Rivers; thence by the watershed to Whakatakaa Trig. Station ; thence by the watershed between Waikaremoana and the Whakatane River, over Huiarau and Maungapohatu and Manuaha Trig. Stations, to the southern boundary of the Whakatane County ; thenoe again by that county and by Cook County to the sea : thence towards the east and south-east generally by the sea to Moeangiangi: thence towards the south generally by the leading spur and the southern watershed of the Waikare River to Taraponu Mountain ; thence by the leading spur to the confluence of the Mohaka River with the Waipunga River ; thence by a right line to Tataraokino Mountain; and thence towards the west generally by the eastern watershed of the Mokomokonui Stream to Pohokino Mountain; thence by a line running due east to the Pukahunui Stream ; thence by the leading spur and the western watershed of the Te Hoe River to Maungataniwha Trig. Station ; and thence by the north-eastern boundary of Heruiwi No. 4 Block to the place of commencement.

IN exercise of the powers vested in me by “The Animals Protection Act, 1880,” and its amendments, I, William Lee, Baron Plunket, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby appoint the Postmaster at Waimate to sign and issue licenses to take or kill imported game—namely, cock pheasants and Californian quail—within that portion of Waitaki-Waimate District, consisting of the County of Waimate, and that portion of the County of Mackenzie lying to the west of a line commencing at Mount Cook and proceeding by a right line over the Ball Hut to the Tasman Glacier, thence aiong the western boundary of the Tasman Glacier to the Tasman River, thence by a line along the middle of that river and the middle of Lake Pukaki and the middle of the Pukaki River to the Waitaki River, to any person on the payment of the sum of one pound.
