Extracts from New South Wales Police Gazette.

(From Gazette, 1903, pages 50 and 59.)

Sydney.— Description of a man who, on the 24th January, called on Mrs. Hughes, Lotaville School, Walsh’s Avenue, Randwick, and offered a cheque for £123, signed S. E. Goldsbrough, of Goldsbrough, Mort, and Co., drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, Ashfield Branch, for the payment (in advance) of board and education for his two daughters for a period of six months. Mrs. Hughes did not take the cheque. This man gave the name of “Atherton,” and is probably about forty years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, clean-shaved except small dark moustache, slightly bald, smart gentlemanly appearance, has scar or mark of bum on left side of mouth; dressed in dark-brown clothes, dark-felt hat; spoke with a Scotch accent. On the 30th January this man called on Gertrude Ford, private school, Albert Road, Strathfield, and arranged to send his two daughters to her school, and paid her in advance with a cheque for £123 11s., and received Miss Ford’s cheque for a balance, £lB 11s., on Bank of New South Wales, Burwood. After leaving Miss Ford’s residence, offender called on Dr. Mills, of Strathfield, and desired the doctor to examine him ; he then tendered Miss Ford’s cheque, receiving from the doctor an open cheque for £l7 10s., which he cashed at the Bank of New South Wales, Burwood. May have left for Queensland or New Zealand. The cheque for £123 is a forgery. On the 23rd Januuary offender called on Mrs. Styles, at Chandos Street, Ashfield, and attempted a like fraud on her.

Newtown.— A warrant has been issued by the Newtown Bench for the arrest of William Dunstall Greathead, charged with wife-desertion. He is thirty-three years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, slight build, thin features, fair hair, fair complexion and moustache, left thumb disfigured through being cut ; dressed in blue sac coat, dark-tweed trousers and vest, and brown soft-felt hat with narrow rim ; a labourer ; a native of Sydney. May go to New Zealand. Was employed in Tram Department, Brisbane, three years ago. Complainant, Clara Greathead, Mooney’s Bush, Belmore.

By Authority : John Mackay, Government Printer, Wellington.
