Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Te Aroha. —Mrs. Kahu Mair reports that, between the 11th and 21st ultimo, her dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A ladies’ silver hunting-watch, number supposed 1898 or 1899; a silver double albert chain ; two huia-feathers, one about 4 in. and the other about 7 in. long ; four ladies’ white-calico chemises; six white petticoats, flowered and embroidered ; six pillow-slips, all nearly new : value, £7 18s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Adelaide Gowan, a native of Te Aroha, sixteen years of age, about 5 ft. 2 in. high, brown hair, blue eyes, pale face, slight build, childish looking ; dressed in grey waterproof and white Gem hat.

Waipawa. — Andrew Neilson is charged on warrant with theft, on the 10th or 11th ultimo, of ten £1 notes, 10s. in silver and coppers, a silver-mounted straight-stem pipe with amber mouthpiece (a notch in silver round the mouth of bowl), the property of Thomas Hope. Pipe only identifiable. Offender is a native of Denmark, a sailor and labourer, twenty-seven years of age, 5 ft. 8f in. high, stout build, fair complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, reddish moustache ; dressed in serge suit, grey - and - black cap, tan shoes. Woodville. —George Knopp, travelling jeweller, care of Mr. Foreman, Taranaki Street, Wellington, reports supposed stolen at the Post Office Hotel, Woodville, on the 29th October last, a ladies’ 18-carat gold ring, Maltese cross design, set with a diamond, a ruby on each side, gipsy setting; ring enclosed in a small celluloid case lined with green plush : value, £5. Identifiable.

Palmerston North. —Patrick O’Grady, labourer, reports that on the 15th ultimo, when drunk in Main Street, he was assaulted and robbed of a silver English lever hunting-watch, No. 57696, value £B, by two young men dressed in dark clothes. Identification doubtful.

Palmerston North. —James Harding, labourer, reports that on the 15th ultimo, when drunk in George Street, he was assaulted and robbed of an American hunting lever silver watch, No. 42874, value £5, and about 9s. in silver, by two young men dressed in dark clothes. Identification doubtful.

Palmerston North.— William Pacey reports stolen from his bedroom in the Occidental Hotel, on the 14th ultimo, a gold brooch formed of two Jubilee sovereigns joined together; value, £2 10s. Identifiable.

Lower Hutt. —James Murray, labourer, reports stolen from him in the Central Hotel, on the 21st ultimo, a gentlemen’s rolled-gold open-faced watch, number unknown, glass cracked, J. M. scratched on inside of case ; a silver double chain with greenstone pendant, a small silver medal, a star medal with J. M. scratched on it, and a farthing with a hole bored in the centre and filled with greenstone: value, £2. Identifiable.

Wellington. —John R. Stansell, flax-miller, reports stolen from the Clarendon Hotel, Manners Street, on the 14th ultimo, a black-morocco dressing-bag, 18 in. long, containing a set of toilet requisites, three white handkerchiefs, three pairs of black-merino socks, a suit of pyjamas, a Jubilee sovereign, a half-sovereign, two five-shilling pieces, a shilling, a George 111. half-sovereign, and a black-silk waterproof coat with blue-velvet collar ; value, £B. Identifiable.

Christchurch. — Harry Nevin is charged on warrant with theft from the dwelling of Thomas Miller, Durham Street, on the 15th October last, of a silver Swiss stopwatch, a gentlemen’s silver albert chain, a ladies’ silver chain (small-link pattern), and a metal scarf-pin set with imitation sapphire; value, £2 12s. Identifiable. The stopwatch and gentlemen’s silver chain recovered. Offender is supposed native of England, about forty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, sandy moustache and goatee, ruddy complexion, medium build ; dressed in navy-blue square-cut coat and vest, dark-brown baggy trousers, brown soft slouch hat, generally wears a scarf. He has been formerly in Ashburton and Timaru.

Christchurch. — J. Thompson (name probably fictitious) is charged on warrant with theft from the NewZealander Hotel, on the 11th ultimo, of a coat (recovered), the property of Robert Cochrane Wilson, butcher, Maheno; value, £3. Description: About forty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, medium build, full dark beard turning grey ; dressed in slate-coloured suit and black hard hat. Offender pledged the coat at Mrs. Bowman’s pawn-shop, Colombo Street, on the 11th ultimo.

Christchurch. —William Grigsby and Donald Smith report stolen, on the 18th or 19th of October last, from a room at the rear of Warner’s Hotel, a pair of black-cloth trousers, an Italian-cloth coat (“Black, Beattie, and Co.” on the tab), a black-cloth vest (low in front), the property of W. Grigsby ; value, £2 : a heavy silver chain with a Dunedin Exhibition medal and a small French silver coin attached, a rolled-gold watch, an Italian-cloth and a black-cloth vest, the property of Donald Smith ; value, £1 15s. Identifiable.

Christchurch. — William Reid, tailor, reports stolen from Mrs. Smart’s boardinghouse, St. Asaph Street, on the 15th ultimo, a piccolo, six keys, dark body, ivory mouthpiece inlaid with silver mounted top and bottom, G.M. and four figures on mouthpiece; value, £5. Identifiable.

Sheffield. —Gilbert Henderson, farmer, reports stolen from his dwelling at Halkett, on the 13th ultimo, a silver lever hunting-watch, G.H. in German letters on outside of case, imitation-gold curb chain with flat-headed key attached, maker “ White ”on it; a sovereign; a half-sovereign ; and a woollen tobacco-pouch lined with silk, pipe and heart worked on it: value, £7 10s. Suspicion attached to William Coleman. Descripton : A native of New Zealand, has been in Burnham Industrial School and licensed out at several places, about twenty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, brown hair, is said to have a bald patch on side of head the size of a sixpence ; is a returned trooper of the Ninth Contingent. Kaiapoi,— Robert Rice, labourer, reports stolen from the Kaiapoi Hotel, on the 6th ultimo, a gentlemen’s Kent bicycle, No. 565, 26 in. frame, front wheel 28 in., back wheel 30in., bent handles, white-bone grips, silver King of the Road lamp attached ; value, £l2. Identifiable.

Timaru. —Theft of watch and chain from Thomas Quinlan : Archibald Wilson has been arrested for this offence by Constable R. Crawford, Timaru police, and the chain recovered. Offender states he sold the watch to a seaman on the s.s. “Kumara,” shortly after the theft, for 4s. 6d. The sailor is described as being about twenty years of age, about 5 ft. 9in. high, has a small sandy moustache, name unknown.

Dunedin. —Dr. K. Fyffe, Wellington, reports stolen from him on the s.s. “ Waihora,” between the 7th and 9th ultimo, on the passage from Wellington to Port Chalmers, a gold pin set with a black pearl and diamonds, a gold pin set with an opal—both can be used as collar-studs ; also a red-plush jewel-case ; value, £lO. Identifiable.

Dunedin. Charles Edward Hately, labourer, reports stolen from his bedroom in the Glasgow Restaurant, on the 19th ultimo, an American hunting Waltham silver watch, number unknown, C.E.H. and fern-leaf engraved on inside case, white-metal chain attached ; value, £2 15s. Identifiable.

Mornington (Dunedin). —Patrick Daly McGuire, telegraphist, reports that on the 24th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : Three sovereigns, a florin, some small silver and coppers, and a penny marked with a cross; two gold cable bangles, gold padlock attached to one engraved “Prom Percy to Kitty,” the other has a plain gold heart attached; a plain gold bangle with horseshoe clasp ; a greenstone battle-axe brooch; a flat bar gold brooch with ruby in centre; a gold brooch, two small bars joined, with a ruby in centre and a pearl at each end; a ladies’ gold dress-ring with a square sapphire and a diamond each end; a ladies’ gold dress-ring set with a sapphire, a pearl at each side ; a ladies’ gold muff-chain, with a small greenstone heart, a gold cross, and a Christchurch Exhibition medal attached ; a small gold neck-chain, fine links, with a large greenstone heart attached ; a gold souvenir the shape of a football, engraved “P. D. McGuire, M.F.0.” ; a gold pencil-case with screw cap on end; a ladies’ gold band ring, engraved “K.N.A.C.”; a gold scarf-pin set with diamonds, a ruby in centre : total value, £37 13s. lid. Jewellery and penny identifiable.

Mornington (Dunedin).— John Gillis, jun., reports that on the 20th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A gentlemen’s nearly new yellow-coloured Melton-cloth Chesterfield coat, chain tab, value £3 ss. ; a gold-mounted hair watch-guard, a gold pendant (about the size of a florin) attached, engraved on one side “ A.0.F.,” on the other side “ Presented by the United Otago District, A.0.F., to P.D.C.R. John Gillis, jun., March 27th, 1896”; two sets of cheap sleeve-links with photographs of Duke and Duchess of York on them ; and a few shirt-studs: total value, £9 ss. Identifiable.
