Extracts from New South Wales Police Gazette.
(From Gazette, 1901, pages 433 and 465.) Sydney. —A warrant has been issued by the Water Police Bench for the arrest of John William Weaver, charged with falsely pretending to Charles Danvers that a certain bay mare referred to in a certain paper, to wit, a proposal for sea insurance, had cost the sum of £315, and was then of that value, and that the said mare bad beeu purchased by him in the State of Victoria, by means of which false pretence he induced the said Charles Danvers to affix his name to a policy of insurance, with intent to defraud, at Sydney, on the 27th September last. Offender is sixtyseven years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. or 6 in. high, very stout build, grey hair and moustache dyed ginger, bald on top of head; wore dark walking-coat, light trousers, and white helmet; an Englishman, a horse-dealer, well-known in the neighbouring States. Was arrested on a similar charge and absconded from his bail. Complainant: Charles Danvers, “Kilarra,” North Sydney. He is known in New Zealand as a shipper of horses, under the names of John W. Weaver, Robert A. Maggs, and Webber. Arrest of offender very desirable.
Cobar. —A warrant has been issued by the Cobar Benoh for the arrest of W. S. Asquith, charged with forging a cheque for £6 on Commercial Banking Company, Sydney, purporting to be drawn by J. A. Bradley, and uttering the same to Henry Davis, of Wrightville. Offender is twenty-three years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, rather stout build, brown hair, fair complexion, eyes deeply sunk, thick lips, clean-shaved, hair cut very short ; dressed in blue-serge or cricketing suit, and drab-felt hat with light band ; a journalist. Came from New Zealand about eight months ago, and is now supposed to have returned, or to have gone to Armidale.
