Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Devonport. —John Henry Smith, labourer, reports supposed stolen from the yard of the Wade Hotel, on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, a bay hack gelding, two years old, 14 bands 2in. high, ruptured near the sheath, small saddle-mark on wither, both knees recently broken, slippers on front feet, only ; value, £7. Identifiable.

Pukekohe. —Matthew Findlay, farmer, reports stolen from Messrs. Buckland and Son’s paddock, Runciman, on the 19th or 20th ultimo, three steers, twelve mouths old—one red, and two red and white ; tips off right ears; no brands : value, £B. Identifiable.

Feilding. Charles Moores, charged with theft of cattle, has been arrested by Constables J. Twomev and F. J. Healey, Feilding and Kimbolton police, and remanded.

Raetihi. —Between the 7th ultimo and Ist instant there was stolen from the trustees of E. McDonald’s estate six pure-bred Lincoln rams, four of them four tooth, car-marked with a punch-bole, and a V-shaped snip out of off ear, and a V snip out of bottom of near ear ; the two six-tooth have a snip out of the centre edge of off ear ; all branded with two horizontal bars on face : value, £l6 16s. Identifiable.

Hastings.— -Andrew Jacob is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 27th ultimo, of a horse, the property of Anaru Puriri, Bridge Pa; value, £25. Description: A Maori, a labourer, fifteen years of age, 5 ft. in. in height, light-copper complexion, black hair, brown eyes, large flat nose (see Police Gazette, 1901, pages 44 and 68); was wearing a new slatey-green coloured tweed suit and tan boots. Horse recovered.

Wellington. — David Bennie is charged on warrant with the theft, on or about the 28th Oolober, 1901, of two horses (recovered), the property of Maurice Welch, farmer,

Taita; value, £47. Description: A native of Scotland, a blacksmith and horse-breaker, thirty-six years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, stout build, brown hair, heavy brown moustache, quiet manner, speaks low; generally wears dark-brown sac suit, with mourning-band, black Alpine hat, and silver curb wateh-chain ; was in Wellington on the 6th instant. Offender received the horses to break them in, but sold them and cleared out. He had also charge of four horses belonging to Edgar Hyde, auctioneer, Victoria Street. He sold two of them (recovered), but the two described as follows are still missing: A bay colt, four years old, 15 hands high, X on inner side of near fore hoof; a bay filly, four years old, nearly 15J hands high, X on inner side of near fore hoof: value, £2O each. Identifiable.

Wellington. Thomas Lyons, cab proprietor, reports stolen from his stable, Abel Smith Street, about the 20th July last, a black gelding (recovered), and a saddle and bridle; value, £7. The horse was sold to George Oudby, Lower Hutt, on the 20th August last, by G. Reid (name probably fictitious). Description: About thirty-five years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, narrow forehead, dark-brown moustache and side whiskers; dressed in dark-brown suit, soft brown hat, and soft shirt with collar attached ; had the appearance of a labourer.

Mornington (Dunedin). —Donald Henderson, grocer, reports stolen from his paddock on the sth or 6oh instant a dark-brown gelding with black points, small blaze down face, fourteen years old, 16 hands high, branded C on off shoulder ; had a canvas cover on : value, £l7.

Wyndham. —Murray, Roberts, and Co., Dunedin, report stolen from the Woodslea Downs Station, between the 3rd September and 20th ultimo, 147 cross-bred ewes, four years old, branded F.F. in red on rump, fore quarter out of off ear, punch-hole in near ear ; value, £lO2 18s. Identifiable.
