Auckland. — Thomas McCluskey, alias Cosgrove, is charged on warrant of commitment to Mount Eden Gaol for seven days in default of pajing £1 12s. for committing a breach of the peace. Description: A native of Scotland, a horse-trainer, thirty-five years of age, 5 ft. 3£in. high, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, small nose, scar on right cheek. (See Police Gazette, 1900, pages 19 and 63.) On the 18th April last offender was fined and given time to pay, and the above amount is now due.

Newton (Auckland). —Charles Hassett, oharged with false pretences on Platt and Hill, has been arrested by Constable P. J. Dunn, Mongonui police, and remanded to Auckland.

Woodville. — H. E. Adler is charged on warrant with false pretences on Edwin Galliohan, hotelkeeper, on the 10th May, 1901. Description : A native of Heligoland, speaks with a German accent, a carpenter, has been a sailor, about thirty-seven years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, well built, square shoulders, full chest, rather small face, brown hair, sandy moustache, weather-beaten appearance ; dressed in brown clothes and had a dark-blue pilot overcoat. Offender drew a oheque for £2 on the Bank of New Zealand, Eketahuna, which was returned marked “No account.” He also issued two other cheques for similar amounts on the 11th and 13th May last, which the complainant also cashed. Left Palmerston North for Ashhurst on the 17th ultimo.

Feilding. — William Joseph Baker is charged on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Gaol for fourteen days, in default of paying £2 10s., fine and costs for procuring liquor when a prohibited person. Description: A native of England, a blacksmith, about thirty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, stout build, fresh complexion, blue eyes, darkbrown hair, clean-shaved except heavy moustache ; generally dressed in dark suit and bard black hat. On the 27th March last he left Feilding, supposed for Dunedin, where he represented he had obtained work with Reid and Gray.

New Plymouth. —Walter Johnston, charged with failing to comply with the terms of his release under “ The First Offenders’ Probation Act, 1886,” is now employed as waiter at the Club Hotel, Stratford, and has promised to pay 10s. per month.

Dunedin.—William Shears is charged on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Gaol for twenty-four hours, in default of paying Bs. fine and costs for drunkenness. Description : A native of England, a labourer and gardener, sixty years of age, about 5 ft. 10 in. high, medium build, pale complexion, grey hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache ; generally dressed in grey-tweed suit. On the sth April last he was fined and allowed time to pay, but failed to do so.

United States, America.- Description of Charles J. Walden, wanted for forgery and embezzlement, at San Rafael, California: Fifty-one years of age; a German; complexion, florid; eyes, hazel; hair, dark-brown; size of foot, 7J; round features; high, broad, retreating forehead; quite bald; small, round, projecting ears, with medium detached lobes; small square-cut nose, slightly upturned; small, oval, arching nostrils; small, round ohin; well muscled;

stout build; hair on arms, breast, and stomach; several small indentures (like pock-marks) on cheeks, one on each temple; three dim vaccine-marks on each up-arm; small flesh-mole, 1£ in., to right of centre of base of back of neck; religion, Protestant; legitimate occupation, book-keeper; education, public (college). He was convicted in San Joaquin County of forgery and embezzlement (three commitments) and sent to San Quentin Prison in 1883, his sentence being commuted in 1887- He is wanted for forgery and embezzlement committed while employed at the prison.
