(See Police Gazette, 1901, page 104.) Auckland. —John P. Lawson’s ring was handed to him by some person unknown. His name was not obtained, and no description can be given of him. (See Police Gazette, 1901 page 104.) Auckland. —Theft from W. J. Napier’s dwelling, Takapuna: The stolen articles, except a white enamelled jug and the axe, have been found.

Cambridge. George W. Shaw, billiard-marker, reports stolen from his bedroom, between the 25th March and 16th ultimo, a pair of cricketing trousers, a white-woollen sweater, a dark-woollen shirt, and two pairs of woollen drawers ; value, £1 18s.

Otorohanga. —Ko Raki, charged with breaking and entering the dwelling of Ngapawa, has been arrested by Detective W. A. Bailey, Auckland police, on information supplied by Constable R. Lanigan.

Thames. —George Collins and Prank Savidan, gum-diggers, report that, on the 20th ultimo, their whare was broken into and the following stolen : About 1 cwt. of gum, a doublebarrelled breech-loading gun (maker, “ Coates,” Binning ham), top action, pistol grip, “ 13J ohoke ” stamped on both barrels under breech, two small marks on right barrel near the foresight; a small kauri-gum heart with shield on it; two large clasp-knives—the property of George Collins : value, £l2 7s. 6d. About 501 b. kauri-gum; a silver openfaced English lever watch (No. 241), maker, “ Morton,” stamped on face and “ Morton ” scratched on inside of case, hair-spring broken, second-hand missing, silver curb pattern chain attached ; a gilt bronze Maltese cross, with rose, shamrock, thistle, and crown on it—the property of Prank Savidan: value, £5 7s. 6d.

Waihi. —John Flett reports that the Rob Roy Hotel was broken into on the 22nd ultimo, the safe removed to the back-yard, opened, and about £1 in silver stolen. Suspicion attached to three men who were seen near the hotel at 3 a.m. No description of them can be given.

Waihi. —John Newdick, baker, reports stolen from his safe, on the 14th ultimo, fifty £1 notes, £ls in sovereigns and half-sovereigns, and £3O in silver, mostly in shillings, sixpences, and threepenny-pieces. Not identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Bewley, about twenty-nine years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, small ginger moustache, large blue prominent eyes, fresh complexion, auburn hair; walks with his hands behind his back.

Napier. William Higgins, alias O’Brien, alias Price, is charged on warrant with having, on the 24th April, 1901, at Napier, assaulted and robbed Cornelius Brosnan of the following articles: A cheque or order on the Bank of New South Wales, Napier, for £2 3s. 4d., drawn by Ernest White ; a wooden pipe, and a small dark bonehandled pocket-knife with two blades. Description : A native of Ireland, about forty-eight years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build, sandy complexion, and hair turning grey with a white lock in front, dark sandy whiskers, a very noticeable scar on left cheek, brown eyes, Roman nose, part of mast and woman’s head on left arm ; dressed in bluedungaree trousers, dark sac coat, and a soft brown or a coarsestraw hat. (See Police Gazette, 1901, page 45.) He is said to have left for Wairoa on 25th ultimo.

Makuri. —Maurice Hasler, settler, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 20th or 21st ultimo, a various coloured dark rug, with two or three small cuts near one corner; a grey single blanket; an old blue-serge coat, size 4 ; a pair of dark trousers, indistinct oheck pattern, with blue and brown threads running through the tweed; a pair of whipcord beaver-cloth trousers with stains of blood on them, a grey flannel shirt, a pair of canvas shoes, an enamelled mug ; two knives, one branded “ Bushman’s Friend,” the other a whitehandled table-knife: value, £5. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, a swagger, supposed native of Ireland, about forty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, dark brown hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache turning grey, scraggy beard ; dressed in dark-tweed coat, a patch on each knee of trousers, slouch hat, boots laced with twine ; may be wearing a pair of the stolen trousers. Supposed going towards Aohanga".

Waitara. —William Beaumont, labourer, reports stolen from his hut, on the 25th ultimo, a brown cash-box, containing seven £1 notes on the Banks of Australasia and New Zealand. Gash-box only identifiable. Suspicion attached to Alfred Davitt and William Walley. For description of Davitt, see Police Gazette, 1900, page 111. Walley is a labourer, about twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, fair complexion, small fair moustache only. Said to be at Inglewood. (See Police Gazette, 1901, page 104.) Patea. Theft of R. Churchill’s clarionet and watch. Walter Warner has been arrested for this offenoe by Constable M. O’Brien, and convicted. Property recovered.

Wanganui. —Albert Williams, law clerk, reports stolen from the hall of the Cafd de Paris, Palmerston North, on the 7th ultimo, a blue waterproof overcoat, detached cape, coloured silk lining, some of the buttons missing; value, £2 10s. Identifiable.

Eketahuna. —The ring stolen from Lancelot T. Herbert was traced by Constable De Norval, Palmerston North police, to Alexander Stapleton, who is charged with other offences at the Supreme Court, Wellington. Ring recovered.

Wellington. —Charles Alfred Cornish, clerk, Wellington Terrace, reports that at 11.30 p.m., 26th ultimo, he was assaulted at the corner of Victoria and Cuba Streets by two men, and robbed of a short-wind Waterbury watch, well worn; a very old snake-pattern silver chain, resembling a number of small bands with worked edges, attaohed: value, £1 10s. The men are described as one being about twentyfive years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, slight build, florid complexion, heavy fair moustache only; the other about twenty-two years of age, about 5 ft. 5 in. high, medium build, clean-shaved. Identification doubtful.

Wellington. —On the 14th or 15th ultimo the Thorndon Railway-station was broken into. The safe was opened, and about £3B 3s. in a white-canvas bag, marked “ £100,” stolen. Bag only identifiable. (See Police Gazette, 1901, page 36.) Wellington. Theft of William Thomas’s coat and trousers: James Wilson, alias Houston, has been arrested for this offence by Chief Detective J. A. McGrath, Wellington police, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.

Manners Street (Wellington). Henry Witten, labourer, reports stolen from Leonard’s boarding-house, about the 15th ultimo, a black-serge inverness mackintosh, plaid lining, lion’s-head fastening at throat; value, £2 7s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a boy, name unktimvn, who was at the boardinghouse on the night of the 15th ultimo, about fifteen years of age, 5 ft. high, stout build, full face. Identification doubtful.

Clyde Quay (Wellington). —John Eckford, labourer, reports stolen from his dwelling, 18, Lome Street, between the 28th Mai'ch and 15th ultimo, a ladies’ silver Geneva watch, flowers engraved on back, number unknown, with short white-metal chain attaohed ; an eagle-claw gold ring, stone missing, now filled with sealing-wax : value, £1 ss. Suspicion attached to John McArthur. Description: About thirty-five years of age, a labourer, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, stout build, sharp features, sandy moustache, clean-shaved, ereot gait, dark hair; generally wears hard black-felt hat, dark coat and vest, and light trousers; a well-known wrestler.

Nelson. —Charles Claude Smith, tanner, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 27th or 28th ultimo, a silver open-faced watch, number and maker unknown, a scratch on dome ; value, £2 2s. Identifiable.

Motueka. —Mrs. Mary Park reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 17th or 18th ultimo, a ladies’ Geneva openfaced gold keyless watch, No. 26261; value, £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Jane Bunn, a native of Collingwood, about twenty years of age, about 5 ft. high, fair hair and complexion, blue eyes, stout build. Supposed gone to Nelson.

Lyell. —Daniel Founo, dredge-hand, reports stolen from his hut, on the 26th or 27th ultimo, three £5 notes, numbers unknown, and a two-shilling piece.

Hokitika. —Reuben Cooper reports stolen from his hotel, on the 13th ultimo, a cash-box containing three £5 notes and £l3 in single notes and silver ; also a cheque for £1 6s. on the Bank of New Zealand, drawn by David Walker. Suspicion attaohed to John Hutcheson ; has been going under the name of Ferguson. Description : Supposed native of Scotland or North of Ireland, about forty-five years of age, stout build, 5 ft. 10 in. high, ruddy complexion, clean-shaved except heavy dark-reddish moustache; dressed in a black-and-white striped coat and trousers; is said to have worked at Perrin’s stables, Kumara. Supposed gone to Napier. The wife of licensee gave the cash-box to a boarder named Slodden for safety, and it was stolen from his bedroom shortly after.

Christchurch. —James, alias John, Kelly, convicted of theft, is identical with John Murphy, a New South Wales piokpocket, and was sentenced at Sydney for theft on the 27th April, 1895, to three months; on the 23rd September, 1895, three months ; on the 14fch February, 1898, twelve months’ hard labour.

Phillipstown. —Simon Richards, coal-merchant, reports that on the 23rd ultimo his dwelling was broken into and the following stolen : Five £1 notes, a half-sovereign, and ss. 6d. in silver; a ladies’ silver hunting Swiss watch, No. 250802; a ladies’ gold guard chain composed of three small strands, with centrepieoe and tassel; a ladies’ gold safety-pin brooch, letter Nin centre, set with thirteen pearls; a ladies’ rolledgold brooch, composed of two bars, with filigree-work and three imitation stones in centre ; a ladies’ dark-green leather purse with silver heart and letters H. R. on left-hand corner; a ladies’yellow-leather purse, imitation lizard-skin; six silver ornamental worked egg-spoons, a pair of silver ornamental worked sugar-tongs, a pair of silver ornamental worked mustard-spoons, and two silver ornamental worked salt-spoons : total, £lO 10s.

Dunedin. —Harry Brough, currier, North east Valley, reports stolen from him, on the 20th or 21st ultimo, a silver lever hunting-watoh, No. 156246, maker G. and T. Young, Dunedin ; also an 18-carat curb-pattern double chain, a long greenstone pendant, gold-mounted, attached to third link from centre of chain, file-mark on bar of chain : value, £l3.

Invercargill. —Benjamin Gilmour Thompson, Albion Hotel, reports stolen from him, on the 24th ultimo, an openfaced keyless watch, black metal case, glass cracked, resembles a Waterbury, maker and number unknown; a gold double watch-chain, curb pattern, with small gold heart attached in centre, and a silver match-box at one end: value, £lO 10s. Suspicion attached to a swagger, name unknown, who rode in the trap with complainant from Woodlands to Kennington. Description : A native of London, England, about twenty-eight years of age, about 5 ft. 8 in. high, slight build, clean-shaved except small sandy moustache, fair hair, fresh complexion, long features, a mark resembling a bruise on right side of forehead ; dressed in old navy-blue suit and black soft-felt hat. Identifiable.
