Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —John Horatio Lloyd, sewing-machine agent, reports stolen from his bedroom in Whitehead’s Coffee Palace, on the 28th Deoember last, a gentlemen’s silver watch, maker’s name and number unknown, “ J. H. Lloyd ” scratched on inside case, a silver-plated chain, close links, with a silver grooved pattern match-box attached; value, £2 15s.

Surrey Hills (Auckland). —Victor Casey, contractor, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 11th or 12th ultimo, a brown-leather purse containing a £1 note, four half-sove-reigns, and 4s. in silver; a ladies’ old-fashioned thin gold chain about 3 ft. long, the links threaded with gold wire, giving the appearanoe of a oable pattern; and a Maltese cross of tortoise-shell studded with gold round the edges: value, £7 11s. 6d,

Hikurangi. —Joseph Morgan, billiard-marker, reports stolen from the billiard-room of the Hikurangi Hotel, between the 24th and 26th Deoember last, a set of ivory billiard-balls ; value, £3. Not identifiable.

Hikurangi. —Charles White reports stolen from his bedroom in the Whakapara Boardinghouse, on the Bth or 9th ultimo, a brown-leather purse containing two £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand and two steamer tickets, one return from Great Barrier Island to Auckland and one from Auckland to Whangarei. Suspicion attached to Samuel Palmer, a half-caste Maori, about thirty-five years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. high, slight build, shaved except blaok moustache ; speaks good English.

Shortland. —John Brooks Mason reports that, on the 15th or 16th ultimo, his hotel was broken into, and the following stolen: Eight large and ten small bottles of champagne, fourteen bottles port, ten bottles Tokay, nine bottles Frontignac, ten bottles sherry, and ten bottles ginger-wine, ten bottles very old brandy, ten bottles Hartman’s, five bottles Hennessey’s three-star and two bottles one-star, two bottles Chateau Tunanda brandy, twelve bottles Wolfe’s schnapps, ten bottles lemon-squash, two boxes cigars, two hams, a side of bacon, a meat-saw, and a quantity of English ale and stout; value, £29 17s. lOd.

Woodville. —Jameß Rhodes, labourer, reports that, on the 19th December last, when drunk on the Woodville Raoecourse, he was assaulted, and the following stolen from him: A small metal open-faced keyless watch, “ Florida ” on face, gold hands with fancy engraving, value £1 55., and about £3 in money. Suspicion attached to Denis Barry and Denis Rogers. Description: First, a colonial, twenty-four years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, dark hair and complexion, no hair on face; dressed in lightbrown tweed suit, and straw hat. Second, a colonial, twenty years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. high, slight build, dark hair and complexion, no hair on face, dressed in dark-tweed sac suit and Dr. Jim hat. Left for Masterton on the 22nd ultimo.

Woodville. —T. M. Pool reports stolen from the Club Hotel, between the 18th and 22nd December last, an oak varnished box, with “ Waipawa County Hospital ” on it in gold letters, containing coins amounting to about £l2, which had been placed in it during a number of years for the benefit of the above-named hospital.

Description : A native of Victoria, a spieler, twenty-seven years of age, about 5 ft. 10 in. high, slight build, dark complexion, clean-shaved except small mouse-coloured moustache, scar on corner of one eye; dressed in dark sac suit, tan boots, stand-up collar, light bow tie, and drab Dr. Jim hat. He left Feilding on the Ist December last for South, accompanied by another spieler named William Thomas, about twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, stout build, dark complexion, cleanshaved, moustache clipped short; dark sac suit, and blackfelt jockey hat.

Wellington. —Arthur Bartholomew Clater, outfitter, reports that, on the Ist instant, his dwelling in Levy Street was broken into, and the following stolen: Four sovereigns, a gold greyhound breast-pin, a gold chain bangle fastened with a padlock, medal attached with man and horse and the words “ Rough Riders ” engraved on it; a gold bar brooch, amethyst in centre. Pin only identifiable. Total value, £lO.

Wellington. —Robert Douglas, cab-driver, reports stolen from his bedroom at Popham’s stable, on the Ist instant, a gentlemen’s silver lever open-faced watch, No. 118691, maker Stewart, Dawson, and Co.; value, £2.

Wellington. —Alexander Taylor, labourer, reports stolen from his whare at Karori, on the 11th December, 1900, a Bengal razor in case, a leather-and-canvas strop, two metal watoh-ohains, one with single long links, the other a double chain with twisted links. Strop only identifiable. Value, Bs. 6d.

Wellington. George Fisher, M.H.R., reports stolen from his dwelling, Hill Street, on the 4th ultimo, a long grey-tweed overcoat with cape sewn on ; a nearly new long blue-black waterproof mackintosh, tartan lining, no cape: value, £B. Both identifiable.

Wellington. —The bicyole stolen from William Biggs has been recovered at Meech’s auction-rooms, Manners Street, by Acting-Detective A. Cameron. It was pawned on the 26th October, 1899, with W. Smart by a Chinaman, who gave the name of John Kee, Masterton, who is described as being small and young. Identification doubtful.

Thorndon (Wellington). —Mrs. Emily Carter reports stolen from her in the train between Johnsonville and Wellington, on the 20th ultimo, a brown-leather purse containing four £1 notes, a half-sovereign, some silver, and a return ticket Wellington to Waikanae.

Manners Street (Wellington). —Robert Scott, labourer, reports stolen from his tent, near Cuba Street, on the 22nd December last, a Waterbury watch, has a dent in case; value, £l. Identifiable.

Clyde Quay (Wellington). —Mrs. Hall, 31, Cambridge Terrace, reports stolen from her dwelling, between the 13th and 15th ultimo, a plain gold ring, “ Loo ” on it in raised letters ; a thin gold horse-shoe ring set with diamonds, one diamond missing : value, £7 10s. Identifiable.

Christchurch. —John O’Malley, olerk, reports that, about 11.30 p.m. on the 27th Deoember last, a man, not identifiable, about thirty years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. high, dressed in light suit of clothes, knocked him down in Tuam Street and robbed him of three £1 notes, about 15s. in silver, and a gentlemen’s rolled-gold keyless hunting-watch, No. 6390870; total value, £6.

Christchurch. —Ruth Candall reports stolen from her dwelling, Papanui Road, on the 22nd November last, a pair of gold eye-glasses with straight bar across the top, tarnished gold wire attached ; value, £2. Identifiable.

Kaiapoi. —James Hammon reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 31st Deoember, 1900, or the Ist instant, a gentlemen’s well-worn gold albert, curb pattern, no bar, each link stamped; value, £3. Identification doubtful.

Dunedin. —James Pollock, Glen Road, reports stolen from him in the Royal Arcade, on the 22nd December last, a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 86683 ; a silver chain with large links, stamped on each link, and a locket, plain on one side, attached: value, £5.

Dunedin. —Shan You, shopkeeper, reports stolen from him at the Wingatui Racecourse, on the 29th October last, a purse containing six or seven sovereigns, a £lO note, and two or three £1 notes, bank and numbers of notes unknown.
