Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. — Theft of Emanuel Warden’s watch and chain: The watch has been recovered by Chief Detective M. Grace, Auckland police, from Mary Loudon, second-hand dealer, who purchased it from a man of whom she can give no description ; chain not recovered.

Auckland.— William Dawson Davidson’s dwelling broken into : This offence was committed by Walter Joseph William Thorp, already committed for trial on several charges. This charge was not proceeded with, as the witnesses failed to positively identify him.

Avondale.— James Nathan Troy, alias Thompson, is charged on warrant with having, on the 7th instant, broken into the dwelling of William Irwin and stolen 3s. 6d., and kauri gum, value 3s. 2d. Offender is a native of Sydney, a gum-digger, forty-six years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, strong build, sallow complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, two patches of white hair on back of head. (See Police Gazette, 1899, page 224.) He left on the Bth instant for Helensville. Hugh Storey, who was also charged with above offence, has been arrested and remanded.

Napier.— Theft of George Cook’s box, containing mathematical instruments : William George Thompson has been arrested for this offence by Detective L. D. Benjamin, Napier police, and sentenced to one month. Property recovered.

Wanganui. —John Downer, contractor, reports stolen from him when asleep in a side - room in the Rutland Hotel, between 6 and 9 p.m., the 12th instant, a cheque, No. 595831, drawn by Thomas Henry Oliver on the Bank of New Zealand, for £8 Is.; and an English lever Rotherham watch, No. “ J. Downer ” engraved on inside case, value £4,

Picton.— Theft of Michael Costeen’s box: Suspicion is now attached to Sydney Hunter, a native of Wellington, twenty-one years of age, 5 ft. 6| in. high, fresh complexion, dark hair, small dark moustache only, blue eyes; dressed in dark-tweed sao coat, grey trousers, black vest, dark-felt hat, tan boots ; generally works about hotels or stables. He was formerly billiard-marker at the hotel, and was seen about the passage shortly before the box was missed. He was arrested the day following the theft on three other charges of theft, and sentenced to one month. The box has been recovered in a section at the back of the hotel with only a few sundries left in it. Property reported stolen not recovered.

Ahaura. — Benjamin Welan, miner, reports that on the 10th instant his hut was broken into, and the following stolen: A £5 note, supposed on the Bank of New South Wales; a£l note, supposed on the Bank of New Zealand ; a half-sovereign, and 45., six prospecting grains of gold wrapped in white note-paper, a miner’s right of 1897 or 1898: all contained in a yellow purse with elastic band. The purse was taken from a coat which was hanging near his bunk, and was the only article stolen.

Rangiora.— George Neugeschwender, labourer, reports that on the 15th instant his dwelling was broken into, and two £1 notes stolen from a box in the bedroom.

Balclutha.— John Flett, farm-labourer, Te Houka, reports stolen from his hut, on the 13th instant, a gentlemen’s doublecased silver Rotherham watoh, number unknown, “James Flett, Otakia,” scratched on inside of case; a short doublelinked chain interwoven with wire, and a square locket with peaked points attached : value, £4 10s. Suspicion attached to John Kinnard, a native of New Zealand, eighteen years of age, about 5 ft. high, medium build, brown hair, pale complexion ; dressed in dark-tweed sac suit, muoh worn, trousers parehed at knees, dark soft-felt hat, white union shirt, and lace-up boots. Suspect worked with complainant, and occupied the same hut, and left there on the 13th instant, supposed for Clinton or Gore.
