Auckland.— On the sth September last a cheque for £2OO, purporting to be signed by William Pyle, sen., was presented for payment at the National Bank of New Zealand, and duly cashed. It has, however, sinoe been declared a forgery, the imitation of the signature being good. Suspicion is attached to L. R. Rishworth, who was a clerk and assistant ledgerkeeper, and in that capacity initialled the cheque, it being supposed that he got some friend to cash it. Suspect is a native of New Zealand, about twenty-one years of age, 5 ft. 10in. high, medium build, erect gait, throws his head back when walking, dark hair and complexion, clean shaved; usually wears a dark-tweed suit and hard black-felt hat. He left by the s.s. “Mararoa” on the 11th of the above month for Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. (See Police Gazette , 1899, page 229.) Napier. —William Williams, charged with false pretences on John Charleß Mason, has been sentenced to six months’ labour, to commence at the expiration of the sentence now being served.

Wanganui. — Harry Toy is charged on warrant with having committed perjury in the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court on the 24th ultimo. Descripton : A native of China, a laundryman, about thirty-six years of age, about 5 ft. 3 in. high, medium build, small dark moustache, round features, short neck, walks quick with short step, wears no pigtail; speaks good English. Supposed to have gone to Wellington on the 31st ultimo.

Dannevirke. —James Swan, charged with the theft of a cheque for £3, the property of Sergeant James Siddells: It has been ascertained that offender sailed from Auckland on the 7th instant on the barque “Grace Deering ” for New York.

Palmerston North.— Richard Walter is charged on warrant with the theft, on or about the 23rd ultimo, of two new drays, painted blue, broad tires on wheels; also two heavy draught bay horses, one eight years old, named “ Prince,” the other “ Punch,” aged four years : value, about £7O. Description: English, labourer, about twenty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 11 in. high, thin build, fair hair inclined to be curly, pale complexion, small fair moustache only, very awkward gait. The offender borrowed £35 from Mr. J. R. Montague, auctioneer, Palmerston North, and gave the above drays and horses as security. On the bill falling due it was found that the offender had left the district, and it is supposed that he disposed of the property in the Levin district.

Benjamin, Napier police, and remanded to Wellington. (See Police Gazette, 1899, page 230.) Hampden.— Frederick Duffy, charged with the theft of Grace Campbell’s money, has been arrested by Constable T. J. Johnston, Naseby police, and remanded to Hampden. (See Police Gazette, 1899, page 207.) Adelaide.— James Muir, oharged with having conspired to cheat and defraud Michael Connell, has been arrested by the London police. (99/1264.)
