Extract from Tasmania Police Gazette.

Mersey District— Harold Pierepoint Shadbolt is charged on warraut, issued on the 22nd May, 1899, by J. H. McCall, Esq., J.P., with having, on and since the 20th April, 1899, at Hamilton-on-Forth, deserted his wife, Mary Shadbolt, and his two children. Description : Age thirtyfive years (looks younger), about sft. 10in. high, medium build, medium complexion, blue-grey eyes (almond shape), straight dark hair, straight nose, thin moustache only, has some false teeth, rather high forehead, scar about 1 in. long in oentre of forehead, running slantingly across, another on cheek near nose, one of his first knuckles rather larger than the others owing to a cut from a spokeshave. Had a great idea of going to Fiji. May go by the name of “Leonard Calvert,” or one of them. Is supposed to be in company with a girl, Annie Hawkins, alias Hennigan, aged about twenty-one years, reddish-brown hair. Shadbolt is of gentlemanly appearance, and is a native of England. Supposed to have left Tasmania via Launceston, by boat, on the 25th April, 1899. [. lnquiry is requested throughout New Zealand for this offender. If traced he should be kept under surveillance and information sent by wire to the Commissioner's Office, where a photograph is filed.]
