Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —Breaking into and stealing from the dwelling of Robert Arthur Bodle : John Francis O’Keefe and John William Foster have been arrested by Constables Davis and Flavell, Thames police, and committed for trial. Gentlemen’s gold ring with bloodstone, and gold horse-shoe pin, recovered.

Auckland. —Lucius O’Brien, shop-assistant, Mount Eden, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 21st ultimo, a ladies’ 18-carat gold ring, set with seven diamonds and two sapphires; value, £5.

Auckland. — Elizabeth Brown, Franklin Road, Ponsonby, reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 28th or 29th ultimo, a gold brooch, about 2 in. long ; design, two Brazilian beetles with large imitation gold fly in centre; pin missing : value, £3.

Gisborne. —Neil Peat Tenyson, butcher, Taruheru Freezing Works, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 16th or 17th ultimo, a brown-serge sac-coat and vest, check pattern ; a brown-serge cap ; and two £1 notes: value, in all, £5. Suspicion attached to Charles Hillson, a labourer, about 5 ft. 5 in. high, dark hair and complexion, shaved except small daik moustaohe; wore a bluish coloured serge suit, and hard black-felt hat. He left for Wellington by the s.s. “ Westralia ” on the 19th ultimo.

Hawera. —John Carr, labourer, reports stolen from the Railway Hotel, on the 24th ultimo, an oil cloth swag, containing a grey blanket, calico mattrass-cover, two whiteflannel shirts, two blue-and-white-striped cotton shirts; two pairs of trousers, one grey saddle-cloth, the other dungaree ; a black-cloth sac-coat, much worn; several pairs of grey woollen socks; a razor, “Cleanshaven” on blade and on cover; a shaving brush and comb: value £5.

Hawera. —James Livingstone, Waipapa, reports stolen from his shooting-box, between the 14th and 16th ultimo, a canvas carriage-rug, about 8 ft. by 6 ft., lined with grey flannel, pieces of leather with metal rings at each corner, which is marked L with a branding-iron and ink; value, £1 15s. Suspicion is attached to A. Evan Caithness Murray McGregor, a native of Scotland, twenty-nine or thirty years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in. high, medium build, ruddy complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, thin sandy beard and moustache ; an ex-Artilleryman.

Waipawa. —Arihi te Nahu, Te Aute, reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 20th ultimo, a ladies’gold Rotherham hunting-watch, No. 45060, value £l7; a gold-mounted plaited-bair Albert chain, value £5; two unmounted greenstone pendants abmt 8 in. long, one straight the other

crooked, value £1 10s. each ; a gold ring with five sapphires in a row, gipsy setting, value £l2; a gold ring with sapphire in gipsy setting, value £110s.; and an 18-carat gold weddingring, value £1 10s.

Wellington. —Mrs. Emily Clarke, boardinghouse-keeper, 15, Ingestre Street, reports stolen from her bedroom, between the Ist and 23rd ultimo, a ladies’ 18-carat gold plain dressring, set with garnets and diamonds (about five stones in all), slightly worn ; and a ladies’ gold dress-ring, set with a large ruby surrounded by pearls, one pearl missing: total value, £3. Suspicion attached to William Hawthorne, a boarder, who is still in Wellington. Description : Colonial, about twenty years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, thin build, thin features, dark hair and complexion, dark eyes, no hair on face ; dressed in a black sac-suit, and dark cap.

Wellington.— Thomas Winters, labourer, Knigge’s restaurant, Willis Street, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 12th or 13th ultimo, a gentlemen’s silver lever huntingwatch, “Coates, Christchurch,” on dial, ring missing from stem and a split-ring substituted therefor, No. 54421, value, £2; also six sovereigns and a half-sovereign.

Wellington. —John Brown, ironmonger, reports stolen from his bedroom at the Dunedin Dining-rooms, Willis Street, between the 24th and 29th ultimo, a gentlemen’s gold-mounted opal scarf-pin, an imitation-diamond pin, three fancy gilt brooches with three small glass balls, about the size of a pin’s head, attached to a small fine chain about Jin. long, an aluminium cigarette-case, a small gold toothpick in wire-work case, and a ladies’ Waterbury watch with figure of a young woman engraved on back case ; value, in all, £4 19s.

Christchurch. —Frederick Hughes, photographer, reports stolen from the passage of the City Hotel, on the 3rd instant, an Anglo-special bicycle, No. 658, painted green, iron rims, Palmer tires, in good condition ; “ King of the Road ” lamp attached : value, £2O.

Rangiora. —Richard Hay Ferguson, schoolmaster, Fernside, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 25th ultimo, a tin cash-box, about 8 in. by 5 in. by 3 in., three compartments: containing three £1 notes, some silver, a Post-Office Savings-Bank book, and private papers; value, about £3 15s.

Cromwell. —William McLeod, farmer, Queensberry, reports that during the night of the 23rd ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: One £lO and two £1 notes, on Bank of New Zealand, about £5 in silver, and twelve penny stamps. A shilling with crossed lines can be identified.

Dunedin. —John Holt, slaughterman. Pine Hill, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 20th ultimo, seven £1 notes, two ladies’ large 15-carat gold rings, one set with two pearls and three glass stones, the other having a glass stone in centre and two missing; value, £1 10s.

Invercargill.— Mary O’Neill, alias Dougherty, is charged on warrant with having, about the 260 h ultimo, stolen from the dwelling of Marion Fleming a cloak, value £4 ss. For description of offender see Police Gazette , 1899, page 30. She is supposed to have gone to Winton or Dunedin. Other charges pending.

Invercargill. —Arthur Lister, draper, Appleby, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 23rd ultimo, a black-serge shirt and bodice, trimmed with black-bead gimp, white hemmed linen collar attached; two white calico nightdresses, trimmed with insertion, embroidery, and white lace : value, £3 10s.
