Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Waihi.— Theft of Charles Harley’s sheep and lambs: Harry Harley, son of complainant, has been arrested by Constable T. Whelan for this offence, and discharged on payment of costs, complainant refusing to offer evidence. None of the stolen property recovered.

Ekbtahuna.— Frederick James Bright, sawmiller, Dreyerton, reports stolen from a paddock, between the 30th ultimo and the Ist instant, two working-bullocks (stags), between three and four yearn old—one, named “ Nugget,” red and white (mostly red), thickset, short horns; the other, “Captain,” strawberry-colour, white face, thickset, short horns; brands, if any, unknown: value, £8 each. Suspicion attached to John Udy, jun., known as “Long Jack Udy,” from whom they were purchased. Description: About thirty-eight years of age, 6 ft. 5J in. high, fair complexion, light-coloured whiskers beard and moustache, about 16 stone weight, fond of drink. Well known in the Wairarapa. He was in the complainant s employ, but left without giving notice. Resides at Waihakeke Road, Carterton.

Little River. —William Birdling, sen., farmer, Halswell, reports stolen from the Ninety-mile Beach, between the beginning of February and 15th March, 1899, 600 half-bred Downs and cross-bred sheep, mixed sexes, principally wethers, two-, four-, and six-toothed and full-mouthed, branded W over B in red on back, punch-hole in each ear,'some of the two-toothed having two holes in one ear and one hole in the other, the full-mouthed having, in addition to the punchhole, a slit in one ear; value, £3OO.

Waimate. —E, P. Burbury, auctioneer, Oamaiu, reports stolen at Clarksfield, about the 15th ultimo, a dark-brown pony gelding, black points, 18 hands high, mark just above nose as if fired, caused by barbed wire; value, £B.
