Auckland. Box Mahoment Brian is charged on warrant with having committed a breach of “ The Bankruptcy Act, 1892.” Description: An Indian, about thirtyfour years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, very slight build, dark sallow complexion, dark hair and moustache only, shortsighted, slovenly walk, stoops slightly; dressed in a navyblue suit, and “ Doctor Jim ” hat; can read and write English ; rides a bicycle. Offender, a pickle-merchant, was adjudicated a bankrupt on the 29th ultimo on the petition of his creditors. He wrote to one of them on the 13th February last, dating the letter Palmerston North, but it bore the Norsewood postmark. He is charged with failing to keep proper books of accounts as are usual and proper in the business carried on by him within three years before commencement of his bankruptcy.

Auckland. — William Henry Hoskins is charged on warrant with having, on the 7th November, 1898, forged the name of J. Crocker to a promissory note for £3O 7s. Bd., and with having uttered the same to Richard Walton, bootmanufacturer, Lome Street. Offender is English, about forty years of age, about 5 ft. 5 in. high, medium build, pale complexion, round features, brown eyes, black hair tinged with grey, black whiskers clipped short, black beard and moustache, lame on right leg ; wore a brown-tweed suit, and hard black-felt hat. He left by the s.s. “ Ovalau ” for Rarotonga on the 11th ultimo. Other similar charges pending.

Auckland. —John William Davenport, charged with the theft of John Metcalfe’s money, has been arrested by Constable E. M. Johnson, Newton police, and sentenced to three months’ labour.

Pukekohe, — F. Neville and D. Dorrick are charged on warrant with the theft, at Waiuku, about the 15th February last, of about 1 cwt. of kauri-gum, value £2 12s. 4d., the property of John Moore, storekeeper and gum-buyer, Patumahoe. Neville is twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, dark hair, fresh complexion, dark moustache, may have short beard ; wore a dark-tweed suit and brown hat. Dorrick the same age, height, and build, fair hair and complexion, small light moustache only; dressed in a light-tweed coat, dark trousers and vest, and straw hat. They are supposed to have gone to Eaglan or Waikato. Carried small swags.

Napier.— William Williams, charged with false pretences on John Charles Mason: A comparison of handwritings shows there is little doubt that the above offender is identical with Eli Eiley, convicted of false pretences at Palmerston North on the 27th October, 1897. Hawera.— Tai Shing is charged on warrant, issued by the Taranaki District Court, with having quitted his place of residence, with a view of defeating proceedings under “ The Bankruptcy Act, 1892.” Description : A native of China, a fruiterer, twenty-eight or twenty-nine years of age, about 5 ft. 2 in. high, slim build, sallow complexion, black hair and eyes, thin features, very prominent teeth, cranes his neck forward when walking or talking, stoops slightly, speaks English very well. Is known in Wellington, Masterton, and Palmerston North. He was last seen at Hawera on the sth January, 1899, and on the 13th of the following month was adjudicated a bankrupt. Eeported by the Auckland police.

Wellington. — Alfred Miners is charged on warrant with having, on the 11th ultimo, carnally known his niece, Violet Buckley, a girl under ten years of age. Offender is a native of the colony, twenty years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. high, fair hair and complexion, blue eyes, slight build, dirty appearance ; wore patched trousers, and dirty scarf round neck. Has been in the Burnham Industrial School. Is said to have been employed at a flaxmill near Poxton.

Wellington. — Percy James (name probably fictitious) is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 14th ultimo, of a Wertheim sewing-machine, value £9 10s., the property of Harry Oscar Hewett, 15, Manners Street. Offender is supposed English or Colonial, about twenty-five years of age, sft. 6 in. or 7 in. high, slight build, fair complexion, fair hair, shaved except fair moustache ; tidy appearance. He obtained the machine on the time-payment system, and sold it.

Christchurch. —At 9.30 p.m. on the 24th ultimo a man, name unknown, indecently exposed himself to Elsie Darnell at the North Belt. Description: About 5 ft. 9 in. high, about thirty-five years of age, brown moustache, closecropped beard ; well dressed in a light suit of clothes and soft light-felt hat. Can be identified. No warrant.

Christchurch.— William Henry Carter is charged on warrant with thfe,theft, on the 25th ultimo, of a tin box, value 12s. 6d., .property ,of Charles David Soott, 30, Strickland Street, Addington. Accused is English, a tailor’s cutter, about forty-ftyei, years of age, 6 ft. 3 in. or 4 in. high, very slijg(ijj Build, shaved except moustache and small imperial (moustache lbhg, with waxed ends), face broad at forehead and ppinted at chin, large ears ; usually wears a black grey trousers, and hard-felt hat of large pattern. Glasgow.— Alexander Younger Peattie is wanted on a Sheriff’s warrant for theft of American and other securities to the value of £6,820 (which he has pledged with bankers in London and obtained advances thereon), from the office of Messrs. Peattie, Macintyre, and Laird, writers, 175, Hope Street, Glasgow, during the year ended the 20th January, 1899; also theft of £4BO in said office or in the branch office in West George Street, Glasgow, of the British Linen Company’s Bank, on the 17th December, 1898. Description: Forty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 11 in. high, heavy build, stoops slightly, and is a little lame in left leg through rheumatism, clumsy slouching gait, dark hair parted at side, thin dark whiskers beard and moustache (may be shaven), very sallow complexion; dressed in

dark coat and vest, tweed trousers, dark twilled overcoat, square felt hat, stand-up collar ; affected tone of speech ; wears a gold ring with bloodstone ; very temperate, and does not smoke. May take the name of Younger or Black. Accused, who is married, and resided at Springboig, Shettleston, near Glasgow, absconded at 1.15 p.m. on Monday, the 16th January. He is a writer, and partner of the abovenamed firm. A letter in handwriting of accused, which had been posted in London on the 19th January, was received by the firm on the 20th January. The defalcations will amount in all to nearly £40,000.
