Palmerston North. —William McDonald is charged on warrant with having, on the 10th instant, obtained £4 18s. from Axel F. Anderson, boardinghouse-keeper, by false pretences. Offender is Scotch, a labourer and contractor, about forty-five years of age, slight build, 6 It. high, dark complexion, dark beard turning grey, clipped at sides, about 4 in. long ; dressed in a dark-tweed suit, and hard black-felt hat. He left by train for Woodville on the same day.

Waipawa. —Kristian Dennison, for default of paying a fine and costs, has been arrested by Constable E. J. McKelvey, Waipawa police, and lodged in Napier Gaol.

Wellington.- -George William Brigham is charged on warrant with having, on the 20th ultimo, forged the signature of John McMenamin to a cheque for £5 10s., and with having uttered the same to Wardell Bros. (For description, see Police Gazette, 1899, page 47.) He is said to be dressed in a shabby serge suit and slouch hat. Supposed to have gone to Christchurch.

Wellington. Anthony Arrowsmith, charged with the theft of £2O, money of John Latham, has been arrested by Detective G. Fitzgerald, Christchurch police, and remanded to Wellington.

Christchurch. —James McGrath is charged on warrant with having, on the 11th ultimo, unlawfully assaulted his wife, Ellen McGrath. Description: A labourer, fifty years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, medium build, red beard whiskers and moustache.

Christchurch. —George Henry Davis is charged on warrant with the theft, on the 24th January, 1899, of a bicycle, value £9105., the property of Thomas Walter Woods. Since recovered. Offender is a colonial, twenty years of age, 5 ft. 5 in. high, medium build, black hair, sallow complexion, thin face, mark of old scar on left side of mouth; wore a dark-serge suit, and soft brown-felt hat. Supposed to have gone to Bangiora or Tekoa. He hired the bicycle, under the assumed name of Symmonds, for a week, but failed to return it, and it was subsequently found broken at Waikari, where he was employed on a farm.

Dunedin.— James Bowling Smith, charged with disobeying the terms of his release under “ The First Offenders’ Probation Act, 1886,” has been arrested by Sergeant Conn, Dunedin police, and lodged in gaol.

Dunedin. —Whiteside Burnett and Bobert Obery, charged with having assaulted James McDonald with intent to rob him, have been arrested by Constables F. S. Parker and P. Gough, Waimate police, and remanded to Dunedin.

Ho-uqebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &e. Auckland.— Dr. John Logan Campbell reports stolen from his dwelling, Gladstone Boad, Parnell, between the 15th January and 3rd February last, three ladies’ gold halfhoop rings—viz., one set witu -five large diamonds, one with three diamonds and two large emeralds, and one with a large ruby in centre and a large diamond 0 n each side • two ladies’ gold keeper-rings—one set with three small diamonds, the other with three small pearls ; and a hlack enamelled ring set with a pearl in centre and three small diamonds on each side, has a spring fixture and hair inside; all gipsy-setting: total value, £lB2 10s. This is considered to be a doubtful report, as complainant’s wife is very old and eccentric, and it is thought may have hidden the rings.

Auckland. —Charles William Egerton, professor, English University, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 15th or 16th ultimo, a ladies’ gold engagement-ring, having two diamonds and three sapphires in claw setting; and two silver bracelets : value, in all, £22. Bracelets since found in a water-closet.

Marton. —Harry Tompkinson, alias William Walsh, is charged on warrant with having, on the 25th ultimo, stolen from the person of John Fitzgerald, labourer, a watch, value £4. Since recovered. Offender is English, a labourer and engine-smith, 5 ft. 6 in. high, slight build, stoops, dark complexion, brown eyes, brown hair, small brown moustache, a drunkard, stops about stables, very quiet and soft-spoken ; dressed in old dirty grey clothes, hard black-felt hat, and lace-up boots. Wanganui. —John B. Clarkson, Palmerston North, reports stolen from his wife while in Wanganui, on the 24th ultimo, a ladies’ 15-carat gold double-cased watch, “N.C.” engraved on outside, maker’s name and number unknown, silk pendant with amethyst on gold signet attached ; value, £7.

Palmerston North. —Mary Helender, barmaid, Cafd de Paris Hotel, reports stolen, on the 24th or 25th ultimo, a heavy brown cape, very high collar, lined with black fur, one side faced with silk, smoked-pearl buttons, top one missing; and a white-cotton blouse with broad blue stripes : value, £2 9s. 6d. Complainant states she lent the garments to a member of the Woodville Band, who did not return them to her, but stated that he had left them under the bed in his room ; no trace of them, however, could be found.

Otaki. —Robert White reports stolen from Hadfield flax camp, on the 9th instant, a pair of lace-up boots, nearly new, with fancy thistle toecaps, size 6; a pair of grey woollen trousers, nearly new, with side pockets, size 4; a new flannel undershirt; two pairs of black merino socks and one pair of grey woollen socks; two white pockethandkerchiefs ; and a long ribbed maroon necktie; and 15s. 6d., the property of William Morris: value, in all, £2 11s. 3d. A man known as “ Sid ”is suspected. Description : A native of Auckland, about eighteen years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, no hair on face ; dressed in dark serge, drab soft-felt hat with wide dark band, white-canvas shoes; believed to be a cook ; two upper front teeth out, and a toe missing from one foot, supposed the left. Suspect left for Palmerston North.

Christchurch. —Stealing from the dwelling of William Errick Craig: Victor D. White, alias Richard White, has been charged with this offence by Constable C. R. Broberg, Wellington police. Stolen property recovered, and traced to his possession. Suspicion is therefore removed from John Patterson Mitchell.

Dunedin. —Frank Finnegan, butcher, reports stolen from the Shades Hotel, between the 2nd and sth instant, a drabcoloured covert coat, nearly new, “J. Cromie and Co.” printed on tab; value, £4.

Dunedin. — James G. Sawell, stationer, Mornington, reports stolen from his dwelling, about the 18th ultimo, a ladies’ half-hunting silver Waterbury watch, very small, “E.H.S.” engraved on back; a large silver shawl-brooch, shaped like a horn, with a Cairngorm stone set in each end and in centre, stone belonging to small end missing ; four small diamond-stones; and an imitation-gold cross : value £5.

Dunedin. —Charles Fraser, fruiterer, Kensington, reports that on the 25th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A small wooden varnished box, 5 in. by 3Jin., two small wooden knobs on top of lid, containing a spade half-guinea, year 1802 ; a Lion shilling, a sixpenny and fourpenny silver piece, King George, 1816 ; a fivepenny copper coin, and several gold and silver foreign coins ; value, £5.
